Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The objective of this research is to determine the functions of code switching performed by the EFL teachers in classroom interaction. This research used qualitative research design which was conducted in SMAN 1 Soppeng. The participants of this research were two English teachers of SMAN 1 Soppeng who were chosen by using purposive sampling technique. To collect the data, the researcher used two kinds of research instrument namely classroom observation and interview. The data obtained were analyzed through Miles and Huberman (1994) qualitative data analysis and combined it with discourse analysis. The procedure of data analysis divided into three stages, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The result of data analysis indicated that there are eleven functions of code switching discovered during the teaching and learning process in classroom interaction, namely checking for understanding, lapses, grammar explanation, pronunciation practice, explaining the meaning of vocabulary, reiteration, topic switch, polite command, speech connective, interjection to get the students’ attention, and emphasize certain word or a point in the conversation. The functions may vary according to the context, situation, and the topic of the conversation.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out whether or not Think-Pair-Share Strategy develops the students’ reading comprehension. The researcher applied quasi-experimental with the form of pre-test and post-test control group design and took the second year students of senior high school as the population. The researcher employed cluster random sampling consists of 60 students. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test in form of reading test. To find out whether or not Think-Pair-Share strategy develops the students’ reading comprehension, the researcher used t-test analysis. The result of the data analysis showed that the value of t-counted (5.747) was greater than the value of the t-table (2.002) at the level of significance (a = 0.05) and the degree of freedom df = 58 which meant that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. Based on the result of data analysis, the mean score of students’ post-test (84.44) was greater than the mean score of students’ pre-test (63.11). Based on the finding and discussion, the researcher concludes that Think-Pair-Share strategy is effective and gives positive effect to the students’ reading comprehension achievement.

Abstract

Despite several researches have been conducted to investigate the issue of code-switching, the findings of this research are significant as they can assist both teachers and students to consider the use of code-switching in EFL classroom, specifically in Indonesia. This research sought to investigate not only the teachers’ perceptions but also the students’ attitudes and perceptions towards the use of code-switching in EFL classroom. This research employed mixed methods research (explanatory sequential design). The participants were two teachers and forty students. Data collection instruments were the questionnaire and semi-structured interview. Findings from the teachers’ interview showed that the teachers use code-switching for certain situations and specific reasons. They emphasized that it is important to speak English as much as possible in EFL classroom because the target language is English. Furthermore, findings from the students’ questionnaire and semi-structured interview showed that most of the students have positive attitudes and perceptions towards the use of code-switching in EFL classroom. They assumed that the teacher should be allowed to use code-switching in EFL classroom since it is used for assisting students and maintaining a good communication between teacher and students.

The researchers used the descriptive qualitative design. The subject of this research was all the tenth-grade students of SMA Karuna Dipa Palu which consisted of 32 students. In collecting the data, the researchers used test as the instrument. The researchers analyzed the data by using error analysis. The result of the research showed that the students made 412 errors in their recount texts which are classified into: simple past tense (34.7%), preposition (6.1%), pronoun (3.9%), spelling (10.7%), and punctuation (44.7%). Abstract

This research was conducted to discover whether the implementation of the IBL (Inquiry-Based Learning) model can improve EFL students’ critical thinking skills and to what extent the IBL model influences their critical thinking skills. This research implemented an explanatory research design. The sample was the students of the English Education Study Program who were taking the subject of Writing in Professional Context at one of the public universities in Central Sulawesi. The instruments used to collect data were tests and interviews. The data that were obtained in this research were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results show that the implementation of the IBL model is effective in improving the EFL students’ critical thinking skills. This achievement has to be supported by the implementation of a proper inquiry-based learning model. By implementing the IBL model, there is an increase in EFL students’ critical thinking skills in six aspects: interpretation, analysis, inference, evaluation, explanation, and self-regulation.

Abstract

Learning Management System (LMS) platform is currently popularly used by universities or institutions as an e-learning platform based. Currently, it may be utilized successfully as a platform to engage students in a classroom context. This study aims to determine the use of the learning management system (LMS) in English language learning based on the analysis of students' perceptions and to establish whether the platforms used contributed to the learning goals in the English Department at Tadulako University. The research design utilizes the descriptive qualitative research method. The finding of the study indicated that learners expressed both sides of the usage of the LMS platform in English language learning; effective and impractical perception. It is effective because the LMS platform improved their comprehension, promoted independent learning, inspired students to complete all tasks and quizzes, and eventually allowed students to achieve good learning outcomes. Meanwhile, for impractical usage, the LMS platform has network instability and limited opportunity for real-time discussion and gets immediate feedback from lecturers.  However, the benefits of the LMS platform outweigh its drawbacks.
