Abstract

l-menthyl acetic is an ester with specific aroma that synthesized by reaction of l-menthol and acetic anhydride and useful in fragrance industry. This paper reports influenced variation of time reaction toward ester product and characteristics l- menthyl acetic based on TLC, FTIR, GC and GC-MS. Reaction using l-menthol, acetic anhydride and catalyst H2SO4 98 % in diethyl eter solvent at temperature 60 °C with variation of time reaction (45, 60, 75, 90, 105 minutes). The result of research is variation of time influence product with highest yield 88,43 % for 90 minutes. Monitoring TLC achived Rf = 0,82; analysis by FTIR achived specific wave number ester 1736,96 cm-1; analysis by GC achived tr = 14,82 minutes and analysis by GC-MS achived tr = 16,13 minutes with base peak m/z = 95.

Abstract

Patchouli oil is an excellent of the Indonesian essential oil, because 45% of essential oil government-reserve is gained from it. Patchouli oil is commonly used in soap industrial, hair tonic, mouthwash, and high quality perfume. In the utilizing, patchouli oil is mixed with other essential oil, such as: clove oil, rose oil, and vetiver oil; since the fixative nature with flavor substance could chain the other essential oil. The fixative nature and the odor resistance come from the tertier alcohol substance, e.i.: patchoulic alcohol as its main component. Although it has long odor resistance, as an aroma substance, the odor of patchouli oil has less strong. As the base character of aroma substances determined by ester component compiler, so it is interesting to study the esterification reaction controlling the amount of ester product. In this research, patchouli oil was converted into the ester substance by esterification reaction using anhydride acid and ZnCl2 catalyst. The esterification was optimized to various concentration of ZnCl2 catalyst from 1–5% and to obtained the most preferred ester dan patchoulic alcohol ratio. Characterization of trade patchouli oil and the product of esterification were conducted based on determining the physical nature, such as: density and refraction index, and also the patchouli oil component's profile from chromatogram and mass spectrum resulted from GC and GC-MS analysis. To know most preferred ester and pachoulic alcohol ratio, using hedonic test with 25 panelists was conducted. The research resulted that the esterification reaction of patchouli oil using anhydride acid could be done by using ZnCl2 catalyst. Characterization result using GC indicated that the component's profile change under esterification condition; while characterization result using GC-MS showed the existence of patchoulic acetate substance. Variation of anhydride acid composition affected the ratio profile of patchoulic acetate and patchoulic alcohol. Hedonic test results showed that panelists'most preferred ratio of patchoulic acetate and patchoulic alcohol is 0.7934.

Abstract

The main problem of the use of N fertilizer in paddy soil Vertisols is the low efficiency. Urea-humic acid applications at certain dosage are believed to increase rice growth and production. This study was aimed to examine the effect of urea and urea-humic acid to the amount and form of N-available, N uptake, plant growth, and the production of rice. Five dosage levels of urea-humic acid were applied for rice on Vertisols. Results of the research showed that the urea-humic acid fertilizer could increase the content of N-NH4+ soil at 28 days and N-NO3- soil at 42 days. The urea-humic acid could improve plant height, number of tillers, and total dry weight. The highest rice production is achieved by 100% humic acid-urea, especially on parameters of dry weight effectively harvested and effectively milled, with 5.56 tons and 4.61 tons per hectare respectively. Correlation between soil N-NO3- level with soil N-NH4+  level was significant at p = 0.05 (r = 0.871). Efficiency of urea-humic acid fertilizer at 100% recommended dosage (200 kg urea-humic acid) to the dry weight of  effectively harvested crop with dry weight of effectively milled crop was 22% compared to the recommended urea fertilizer (200 kg ha-1).

Abstract

A polybag experiment to study the influence of N, K, and micronutrients B, Fe, Zn and the curcumin content in temulawak was conducted in Malang from February – September 2012. Using RBD, 8 treatments (P1  Inseptisol, without fertilizer, P2  Inseptisol  300 urea kg.ha-1, P3  Inseptisol  200 KCl kg.ha-1, P4  Inseptisol  300 kg.ha-1and 200 kg.ha-1 urea and KCl, P5  Alfisol, without fertilizer, P6  Alfisol  300 urea kg.ha-1, P7  Alfisol  200 KCl kg.ha-1, P8  Alfisol  300 kg.ha-1 and 200 kg.ha-1 urea and KCl in 3 replications. The micronutrients in vitro applied RCD by 4 treatments (MS medium, MS without B, Fe and Zn) in 10 replications. The results of experiment showed that dry weight of rhizome per plant in Inseptisol and Alfisol is 30.98 and 9.75 g, content of curcumin 6 month after planting was 3.60 and 4.72%. The highest rhizome weight of 8 months after planting was a combination of N and K of Inseptisol (48.28) and Alfisol (35.75 g per plant). The highest content of curcumin 6 months after planting was on Alfisol (7.99%) and Inseptisol (6.7%) by 200 KCl kg.ha-1.The curcumin content in complete media was higher than that without B, Fe and Zn i.e. 6.26 compared with 1.86–2.39%. Keywords : temulawak (Curcuma xanthorriza Roxb. Abstract

This paper reports a screening results of the secondary metabolites composed in Spathodea campanulata Beauv stem bark, evaluate inhibiting activity of malondialdehyde (MDA) on rats cancer model exposed with benzopyrene, and the histology of its lung. The secondary metabolite of the stem bark fraction consisted of alkaloids, flavonoids-phenolic, terpenoid and steroid compounds. The isolated fraction contained of these metabolites significantly indicate bioactivity by reducting of malondialdehyde (MDA) level, and also histology appearance of the lung tissue prepared from the benzopyrene-exposed rat indicated a curative activity.
