Abstract

This study is aimed at identifying facilities offered through English property advertisements in printed and electronic media in Indonesia, describing the meanings of lingual and non-lingual elements in the form of pictures in the advertisements and interpreting the messages based on sociocultural perspectives. This is a descriptive qualitative study, applying content analysis to 44 data taken from Kompas, The Jakarta Post, Trans TV and Metro TV. The results show as the following. There are 13 facilities offered through the advertisments. The dominating ones are service, recreation, furniture, and sports. The lingual elements exist in brand, slogan, and price. All brands and products symbolize grandeur, luxury, beauty, exclusiveness, and comfort in a modern life. Prices are in Rupiah, US and Singaporean Dollars, and Euro, indicating that the properties are marketed internationally. The visual elements, supporting the lingual meanings, consists of grand houses with gardens and swimming pools, luxurious furniture and interior designs and beaches. Based on sociocultural perspective, there is a cultural transfer of culture to a modern life-style. The use of English in the advertisements can be interpreted as a subtle way to sell the properties to foreign parties with big capital.

Abstract

This research entitled Pergeseran Budaya Sapaan dan Kekerabatan di Wilayah Kecamatan Kraton Yogyakarta Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta “The shift of the address culture and kinship in the district of Yogyakarta Palace in Yogyakarta Special Territory” aims at describing the style of nominal address in the style of Javanese Language and Culture in Yogyakarta, the domain of kinship, the relationship between social status, age, social stratification toward the address forms and kinship, and the shift of address culture and kinship in the district of Yogyakarta Palace. This research is based on field survey and uses a descriptive qualitative method to describe the shift of the address culture and kinship from structural, semantic, and sociolinguistic perspective. The data are words and phrases related to the address forms and kinship which were collected from oral and written sources. The oral sources were taken through in-depth interviews with some informants around the district of Yogyakarta Palace while the written sources were from documents about address forms and kinship. The research instruments were the researchers themselves using validity test. The analysis was carried out through triangulation, peer checking and comparing with some related previous studies. The result shows that there are three kinds of nominal address; high, mid, and low style. Meanwhile, the kinship domains found in the district of Yogyakarta Palace are (1) sultanate, (2) aristocracy, (3) palace kinship, (4) familial relationship, (5) social status, (6) social stratification, (7) neighborhood, and (8) the degree of power in the palace. From this research it is found that social status, age, social stratification, sex influence the choice of nominal address. The shift of address forms and kinship includes (1) the shortening of nominal address, (2) the respect for the social stratification is considered, (3) the broadening of function, and (4) the low levels upgrade their address forms to have a social admiration.

Abstract

This research aims at describing (1) types of lexical variation used by HB VII’s relatives and kanca pethak in the event of Jum’at Kliwonan, (2) the relationship between lexical variation and palace culture, (3) forms of lexical variation used by HB VII’s relatives and kanca pethak, and (4) conservation efforts of cultural syncretism in terms of lexical variation as a guide among the users of language in society. This research was based on field survey and employed descriptive-qualitative method. The data of this research were words and phrases uttered by HB VII’s relatives and kanca pethak in the event of Jum’at Kliwonan. The result of the research shows that there are 6 types of lexical variation based on the domains which cover them, namely ritual, friendship, social stratification, role relationship, trading, and general. In this event HB VII’s relatives and kanca pethak always use high variety of Javanese language. This variation reflects the social stratification in palace culture. The third result is that the forms of lexical variation are dominated by words, followed by compounds and clipping. The fourth shows that there are many efforts done by the group in the preservation of the event of Jum’at Kliwonan, namely by documenting the rules of the event, broadening the territory, and involving the youth in the event

Abstract

Native or non-native English-speaking academics are compelled to write scientific articles in internationally reputable indexed journals today. With high demand of academic English, more and more articles are rejected by the editorial board for various reasons, mainly in the cohesion and coherence of their writing. This research seeks to map the types and patterns of cohesive device used to support the coherence of scientific articles. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, this study compared the use of cohesion devices (CD) by both groups’ writing (native non-native) to further bridge the difficulties faced by non-native writers in shaping their academic writing cohesively and coherently. This study may also serve as a needs analysis that allows for the creation of models, materials, and teaching approaches to scientific article writing for learners of English as a foreign language.

Abstract

The differential impacts of high stakes testing (HST) on curriculum, pedagogy, students learning, teacher professional development, and equity have been known in the literature, but its cancellation impact is not yet known. Situated in the post cancellation policy in Indonesian education system, this study seeks to explore the impacts of such policy change on schools, teacher pedagogical practices, and students’ English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. A multiple case study design was employed in three different high schools involving 3 school leaders, 3 English teachers, and 9 students in semi-structured and group interviews. Their voices were thematically analysed and constantly compared across cases. The results demonstrate shifts on: (i) the individual student’s and school’s reorientation towards their own vision and mission, (ii) curriculum driven and more varied EFL instructional practices, and (iii) more self-regulated learning activities among certain teachers and students. Further and wider scale investigation is required to look deeper on how these shifts occur among larger groups of stakeholders.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the experiential meaning in reading passages found in the Bahasa Inggris for Grade 11 textbook in Indonesia. The research based its analyses on theory of Transitivity System. This research has two objectives, namely, 1) to describe the process types, participants and circumstances dominantly used in each clause within the texts existed in the Bahasa Inggris, and 2) to identify whether the processes reflect the linguistic feature choices of genre provided in textbook Bahasa Inggris. In conducting this research, a qualitative content analysis method was employed. Two data sheets were used as the main instrument. The data were from seven reading passages in the textbook. They were then broken down into clauses. In collecting the data, this research applied document analysis. The data analysis was done in three phases; data reduction (data condensation), data display and conclusion drawing/verifying. There are six process types found in 639 clauses in seven reading passages in the Bahasa Inggris textbook. The findings show the frequency and percentage of each process type as follows: Material Process was 331 (49%), Mental Process was 73 (11%), Relational Process was 149 (22%), Behavioral Process 37 (5%), Verbal Process was 77 (11%), and Existential Process was 15 (2%). It is found that the most dominant used is Material Process which reflects the idea that clauses through which experiences and phenomenon are represented are dominated by entities of actions or something that happened physically. While, the least used is Existential Process. The findings indicate that the processes have reflected the linguistic feature choices of genre in the Bahasa Inggris textbook.
