Abstract

This study is aimed at identifying facilities offered through English property advertisements in printed and electronic media in Indonesia, describing the meanings of lingual and non-lingual elements in the form of pictures in the advertisements and interpreting the messages based on sociocultural perspectives. This is a descriptive qualitative study, applying content analysis to 44 data taken from Kompas, The Jakarta Post, Trans TV and Metro TV. The results show as the following. There are 13 facilities offered through the advertisments. The dominating ones are service, recreation, furniture, and sports. The lingual elements exist in brand, slogan, and price. All brands and products symbolize grandeur, luxury, beauty, exclusiveness, and comfort in a modern life. Prices are in Rupiah, US and Singaporean Dollars, and Euro, indicating that the properties are marketed internationally. The visual elements, supporting the lingual meanings, consists of grand houses with gardens and swimming pools, luxurious furniture and interior designs and beaches. Based on sociocultural perspective, there is a cultural transfer of culture to a modern life-style. The use of English in the advertisements can be interpreted as a subtle way to sell the properties to foreign parties with big capital.

Abstract

The study of linguistic landscape as a new approach to multilingualism has not been much explored within the Indonesian context. With regard to its significance to reveal various aspects of language use in education, this paper focuses on sign patterns in school linguistic landscape and what they represent in term of language situation in multilingual context. The data consist of 890 signs collected from five senior high schools in Yogyakarta. Based on the number and kinds of languages used, the data were categorised into their lingual patterns. The language situation was interpreted based on the main functions of language as a means of communication and representation. The findings of this research reveal three lingual patterns: monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual signs, which are ordered from the most to the least frequency. The monolingual and bilingual signs were found in all five schools while the multilingual ones in three schools. Bahasa Indonesia, English, and Arabic were found in all three patterns. Javanese and French were used in monolingual and multilingual patterns. Latin and Sanskrit were found only in monolingual pattern. As a means of communication and representation, the signage is both informative and symbolic. The studied school linguistic landscape reflects which languages are used and locally relevant to the school environments and how they are positioned. Bahasa Indonesia is dominant while Javanese is marginalised. The use of English in the school signs is frequent but indicates the sign makers’ less capability of the language. The use of Arabic is related to schools’ Islamic identity. Javanese is used as a cultural symbol. Due to its importance, the existing multilingualism at Yogyakarta’s schools should be maintained and efforts to achieve its balanced proportion need to be done.

Abstract

Teaching a foreign language needs to include its relevant culture as the context of the language use. However, studies indicate that many English lecturers in Indonesia have not integrated culture yet in their teaching materials, resulting in students’ low intercultural communicative competence (ICC). This three-cycle class action research was aimed to improve the ICC of first semester students majoring in metallurgy engineering through cultural text-based intercultural teaching. It was designed to overcome problems related to the limited opportunity for speaking practice and insufficient cultural contents in the English materials. Classroom observations and interviews with 22 students and the lecturer revealed that this cultural text-based intercultural teaching was practical to improve the students’ ICC. The integration of cultural texts in various forms: pictures, mind-maps, reading passages, and videos relevant to the subject field, enables the students to interact indirectly with the cultures of people from diverse communities. Answering questions and discussing language and cultural elements as well as the contents of the texts shapes their critical thinking. Their achievement in the role-play is the reflection of their improved ICC and shows their enhanced English skills.  Nevertheless, the students’ limited grammatical knowledge and lack of writing practice became constraints during their writing test. Further studies might investigate the solution for this problem, especially related to the effectiveness of this intercultural teaching in other subject areas.

Abstract

Being polite is significant to maintain good communications as well as social relationship and therefore various strategies are applied to show language politeness. This sociopragmatic study deals with negative politeness found in What Would You Do? TV show to describe the types of negative politeness strategies and investigate the reasons of choosing those strategies. This research applied a descriptive qualitative approach supported by statistics. The data were in the form of utterances containing negative politeness strategies, sourced in the conversations and the scripts between the participants and the actors. There were 106 data collected by note-taking technique from the show’s YouTube channel. The trustworthiness was attained through analyst triangulation. The findings show that seven negative politeness strategies are used by the participants in their responses to the actors: Being Indirect (12), Questions, Hedges (40), Minimizing the Imposition (12), Apologizing (25), Giving Difference (9), Being Pessimistic (6), and State the FTA as General Rule (2). The dominance of Questions, Hedges relates to the options provided to the addressee to accept or refuse the speaker’s request and to make utterances sound more polite. Related to reasons, the payoffs factor was dominant (with 84 occurrences) because it is the basic factor the participants might think about what they will get by applying a certain strategy. The circumstances factor has 22 occurrences, consisting of social distance (14), social power (5), and rank of imposition (3).

Abstract

High digital literacy is significantly needed by English teachers in the trend of industrial revolution 4.0 to promote a better quality of English teaching and learning. However, a significant number of English teachers, as well as pre-service teachers, still had low digital literacy scale and they were not ready to implement digital technologies into English teaching and learning process. This study was aimed to describe the digital literacy scale of graduate school students of English Education Department in a state university in Yogyakarta as pre-service teachers and their readiness toward the application of digital technologies in teaching and learning contexts. The research used mix-methods to collect both quantitative and qualitative data through Likert-scale questionnaires and interviews. The study revealed that the research participants had high digital literacy scales and readiness toward the application of digital technologies. Thus, those graduate school students as pre-service teachers could fulfill the requirements of professional English teachers in terms of digital literacy and improve the quality of English teaching and learning output by integrating digital technologies.

Abstract

Pencapaian bahasa anak dipengaruhi oleh beberapa faktor, salah satunya adalah pengasuhan orang tua. Penelitian ini mengkaji pencapaian bahasa anak usia 2 tahun pada sebuah keluarga di Samirono, Yogyakarta yang diasuh oleh orang tua dan nenek dengan pola asuh permisif. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan resiko pengasuhan permisif yang diterapkan orang tua dan nenek pada pencapaian bahasa anak. Penelitian ini menggunakan model kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Pengumpulan data menggunakan wawancara dan observasi. Informan dalam penelitian berjumlah empat orang yang dipilih menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Data dianalisis menggunakan model Miles dan Hubberman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan peran nenek dalam pengasuhan lebih besar karena orang tua anak dalam penelitian ini mencari nafkah. Orang tua dan nenek kurang memberi stimulasi untuk perkembangan bahasa anak. Orang tua dan nenek juga membatasi anak untuk belajar berkomunikasi. Akibatnya, anak belum mampu untuk melakukan komunikasi sederhana dan baru dapat mengucapkan beberapa kata, seperti "emoh", "dah", "ma", "um", "a". Penelitian ini menggambarkan resiko dari penerapan pengasuhan permisif orang tua dan anak terhadap perkembangan bahasa anak.

Abstract

This research entitled Pergeseran Budaya Sapaan dan Kekerabatan di Wilayah Kecamatan Kraton Yogyakarta Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta “The shift of the address culture and kinship in the district of Yogyakarta Palace in Yogyakarta Special Territory” aims at describing the style of nominal address in the style of Javanese Language and Culture in Yogyakarta, the domain of kinship, the relationship between social status, age, social stratification toward the address forms and kinship, and the shift of address culture and kinship in the district of Yogyakarta Palace. This research is based on field survey and uses a descriptive qualitative method to describe the shift of the address culture and kinship from structural, semantic, and sociolinguistic perspective. The data are words and phrases related to the address forms and kinship which were collected from oral and written sources. The oral sources were taken through in-depth interviews with some informants around the district of Yogyakarta Palace while the written sources were from documents about address forms and kinship. The research instruments were the researchers themselves using validity test. The analysis was carried out through triangulation, peer checking and comparing with some related previous studies. The result shows that there are three kinds of nominal address; high, mid, and low style. Meanwhile, the kinship domains found in the district of Yogyakarta Palace are (1) sultanate, (2) aristocracy, (3) palace kinship, (4) familial relationship, (5) social status, (6) social stratification, (7) neighborhood, and (8) the degree of power in the palace. From this research it is found that social status, age, social stratification, sex influence the choice of nominal address. The shift of address forms and kinship includes (1) the shortening of nominal address, (2) the respect for the social stratification is considered, (3) the broadening of function, and (4) the low levels upgrade their address forms to have a social admiration.

Abstract

As a multilingual country, the Indonesian government has set the positions of local language, national language, and foreign language in education through Law of National Education System No.20 of 2003, Chapter VII, Article 33. Fifteen years passed and this paper seeks to find the results of the law in higher education students by investigating the patterns of language use of multilingual students in English Literature Study Program of FBS UNY. This is a descriptive study with parallel mixed method design. The data in this study were responses upon questions in the questionnaires distributed to respondents where the results were then analyzed quantitatively by using SPSS (17) and the results of interviews were analyzed qualitatively. The source of data in this study were 162 respondents who were students of English Literature study program, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta year 2015-2017. The results show that at home, more than 60% of students use Javanese with intimacy and habit as motivating factors. As English Literature students, they are more exposed to media in Bahasa Indonesia. On the campus, English is only used for academic purposes, Bahasa Indonesia for communicating with lecturers while Javanese is for a casual talk with classmates. Javanese is close to traditional commerce while for the modern one, they prefer to use Bahasa Indonesia. For cognitive and mental activities, Bahasa Indonesia is the most dominant, and Javanese is used more than English. These results imply that rather than conforming to the law made by the government, contexts play a more important role in forming people’s language choices.Keywords: multilingualism, local language, national language, foreign language, English Literature UNY POLA PENGGUNAAN BAHASA MAHASISWA MULTILINGUAL JURUSAN BAHASA INGGRISSebagai negara multibahasa, pemerintah Indonesia telah menetapkan posisi bahasa daerah, bahasa nasional, dan bahasa asing dalam pendidikan melalui Undang-Undang Sistem Pendidikan Nasional No.20 tahun 2003, Bab VII, Pasal 33. Ini adalah penelitian deskriptif dengan metode campuran paralel. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah tanggapan mahasiswa terhadap pertanyaan dalam kuesioner yang hasilnya kemudian dianalisis secara kuantitatif dengan menggunakan SPSS (17) serta hasil wawancara yang dianalisis secara kualitatif. Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah 162 responden yang merupakan mahasiswa program studi Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta angkatan tahun 2015-2017. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa di rumah, lebih dari 60% mahasiswa menggunakan bahasa Jawa dengan keakraban dan kebiasaan sebagai faktor pendorongnya. Sebagai mahasiswa Sastra Inggris, mereka lebih terpapar media dalam Bahasa Indonesia. Di kampus, bahasa Inggris hanya digunakan untuk tujuan akademik, Bahasa Indonesia untuk berkomunikasi dengan dosen, dan bahasa Jawa untuk percakapan santai dengan teman. Bahasa Jawa sangat dekat dengan perdagangan tradisional, sedangkan untuk perdagangan modern, mereka lebih memilih untuk menggunakan Bahasa Indonesia. Untuk kegiatan kognitif dan mental, Bahasa Indonesia adalah yang paling dominan, dan bahasa Jawa digunakan lebih dari bahasa Inggris. Hasil ini menyiratkan bahwa alih-alih menyesuaikan ketentuan yang telah dibuat oleh pemerintah, konteks memainkan peranan yang lebih penting dalam membentuk pilihan bahasa penggunanya.Kata kunci: multilingualisme, bahasa daerah, bahasa nasional, bahasa asing, Sastra Inggris UNY

Abstract

Multilingualism differs from place to place, with different pressures and outcomes depending on each unique situation. In Indonesian context, an important factor is the status and over prestige afforded to the national language, posing a possible threat to local language vitality. This study reports the position of Javanese and Indonesian as parts of the language repertoire of young Yogyakartan multilinguals in three domains: home, school, and the street. A mixed-methods approach was used and the main data were collected through questionnaire and observations at ten participating high schools. The students’ survey was responded by 1,039 students. Their natural language use was recorded at school playground. Supporting data were collected from language teachers’ survey and interviews with school authorities. The findings show that Javanese and Indonesian still compete in the three domains but not in all sociolinguistic situations. Di dalam konteks Indonesia, faktor yang penting adalah status dan prestis yang disematkan untuk bahasa nasional, yang bisa mengancam vitalitas bahasa-bahasa daerah. Artikel ini mengkaji posisi bahasa Jawa dan bahasa Indonesia sebagai bagian dari repertoar bahasa anak muda multilingual di Yogyakarta dengan fokus pada tiga domain: rumah, sekolah, dan jalan. Pendekatan mixed-methods digunakan dan data utama dikumpulkan melalui kuesioner and observasi di sepuluh sekolah menengah. Survei terhadap siswa melibatkan 1.039 responden dan perekaman percakapan natural siswa dilakukan di saat jam istirahat. Data penunjang bersumber pada survei guru dan wawancara dengan pihak otoritas sekolah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan bahasa Jawa dan bahasa Indonesia masih berimbang di ketiga domain tetapi tidak pada semua situasi sosiolinguistik. Pilihan bahasa oleh responden sebagian besar berkorelasi positif terhadap gender dan tingkat pendidikan orang tua. Keywords: multilingual, domain bahasa, pilihan bahasa, kajian sosiolinguistik
