Abstract

The objective of the study was to find out the students’ achievement and motivation toward reading comprehension by using humor story. The researcher applied a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test design. The subject of the research was the eleventh grade of SMK Negeri 6 Bulukumba year 2017-2018. The sample consist 17 students. This research was conducted for eight meetings. The data were collected through test where humor story is one of material that usually used to find out the significance of the students achievement in reading comprehension and questionnaire test use to find out the students motivation in reading comprehension. The result of the data analysis showed that there was significant difference between pre-test and post-test. The researcher’s findings indicated that humor story was enhanced students reading comprehension in terms of interpretive comprehension. It was provided by the students’ mean score in pre-test was 5.55 and post-test 7.41. it showed that the students’ reading comprehension in post-test was higher than pre-test. The value of t-test was 9.31 and it was greater than t-table 2.120 at the level of significance (p) = 0.5 with degree of freedom (df) = N – 1 = 16 where N = 17 students. It was found that the result of t-test value was higher than the t-table (9.31>2.120). It means that the alternative Hypothesis (H1) was accepted and the Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. In other words, humor story can be used to enhance students’ reading comprehension skill. Besides, students’ motivation score in reading comprehension was dominant in competition in reading were the mean score 65.25. It can be concluded that the used humor story approach was able to give greater contribution in teaching and learning reading comprehension.

Abstract

The main point of this research was The Use of Discovery Method to Improve Students’ Writing on Descriptive Text (Pre-Experimental Research at the Tenth Grade of SMAN 1 Sungguminasa). The objective of the reseacrh was to find out whether using Discovery Method was able to improve the ability of the students’ of SMAN 1 Sungguminasa to write descriptive text. This research employed Pre-Exoerimental design that applied Discovery Method to taught writing descriptive text. The study had been done for eight meetings that were designedx; first meeting was for pre-test, 6 meetings for treatment, and the last meeting for post-test. The population was tenth grade students of SMAN 1Sungguminasa in academic year 2016/2017. Total number of population was 25 students and class X MIA 4 was taken as sample by using purposive sampling technique. As the Quantitative method the writer analyzed the data by using t-test. The result showed that there were significance difference on the students’ writing descriptive text in term of content and organization taught with Discovery Method. The students’ mean score of content was 48.8 in pre-test to be 79.6 in post-test. Then, the students’ mean score of organization was 38 in pre-test to be 58.8 in post-test. The study concluded that teaching writing by using Discovery Method increased the students’ ability to write descriptive text at the Tenth grade of SMAN 1Sungguminasa.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out kinds of errors in the use of active and passive English causative in writing is made by the sixth-semester Students English Department at the Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. The method of this research was a correlation with the descriptive quantitative method. The instrument of this research was the writing test. This research took population was the sixth-semester students of English Department at Makassar Muhammadiyah University. This research used the random sampling technique. It is the ideal way to take sample objectively. The researcher took 5 to 6 students from each class by lottery. The total samples were 56 students. The result of the study signs students' error in two categories. They were students’ error in using active and passive English causative. The findings indicated 1107 errors in using active English causative, which the most dominant error is misformation with 578 times of appearances or 52.22%. Addition occupied the second place of the most dominant error with 430 times of appearances or 38.85%. Omission took the third place of the most dominant error with 80 times or 7.22%. Misordering occupied the last place of the most dominant errors with 19 times of appearances or 1.71%. While, the error in using passive English causative indicated 1194 error, which misformation is the most dominant error with 575 times of appearances or 48.16%. Addition occupied the second place of the most dominant error with 394 times of appearances or 33.00%. Furthermore, omission took the third place of the most dominant error with 127 times or 10.64%. Misordering occupied the last place of the dominant error with 98 times of appearances or 8.20%. Based on the research, the researcher concluded that students made the most dominant errors is misformation and the students rarely made misordering errors both are in using active English causative or passive English causative.

Abstract

Since the outbreak of Covid 19 in Indonesia, all universities, including Universitas  Muhammadiyah Makassar, had made a decision for lecturers and students to learn from home (LFH) since March 16, 2020. This decision certainly has an impact on the change of the learning process which is used to face-to-face in the classroom then drastically changed and become online learning. This study aims at investigating the effectiveness of online learning on the Academic Writing course in the English Education Study Program. Pre-experimental design is the method where the sample is purposively chosen. The data is collected by giving pre-test and post-test and questionnaire. The study reveals that students get better writing skills after learning online. It can be seen that the pretest is 50.6 becomes 75.8 in the posttest. Meanwhile, after calculating the t-test it is also found that the effectiveness of online learning on Academic Writing Course through Google Meet is 55%. It is then concluded that online learning using Google Meet on Academic Writing Course has a positive effect on students' writing skills.

Abstract

The partner of this Community Partnership Program (PKM) was a Silk Family UKM. The problems were:(1) lack of knowledge about bodo clothes (baju bodo) accessories design that has a beautiful appearance, (2) lacksthe skills to make bodo clothes accessories designs that have a beautiful appearance, (3) the quantity of productionof bodo clothes that have beautiful-looking accessories is very limited, and (4) the quality of the production of bodoclothes that have beautiful-looking accessories is very limited. The external target was a bodo clothes that hasbeautiful-looking accessories and a variety of colors for adults, teenagers, and children. The methods used were:lectures, demonstrations, discussions, question and answer, and accompanying partners. The results achieved were(1) the partner have knowledge in designing the bodo clothes (baju bodo) accessories, (2) the partner have the skillsto design and sew the accessories, (3) partners have the ability to increase the production of bodo clothes that haveaccessories with a beautiful appearance, (4) partners have the ability to improve the quality of bodo clothes that haveaccessories with a beautiful appearance, and (5) produce bodo clothes that have accessories of various colors with abeautiful appearance.

Abstract

Teachers as professionals are required to always improve their competence and capabilities so that theycan teach their students as well as and as much as possible. One effort that can be done by the teacher is to improvethe quality of learning through classroom action research. This community service aims to motivate teachers in SMPNegeri 23 Makassar to carry out classroom action research and to help them improve their competence inconducting classroom action research (CAR). The service in the form of workshop provided training to t he teachersin the school which was attended by 55 teachers. The methods used are lectures, discussions, question and answer,and training. The activity includes: 1) lecturing on how to carry out a classroom action research; (2) techniques forpreparing classroom action research proposals; and (3) techniques for preparing classroom action research reports.The output of this program are: 1) the teachers are motivated and willing to develop learning innovations in schoolsthrough classroom action research and 2) the teachers make proposals and carry out classroom action research.

Abstract

Pada masa pandemi Covid-19, pemanfaatan aplikasi pembelajaran amatlah penting dan tepat digunakan agar proses pembelajaran dapat terus terselenggara dengan baik. PKM ini bertujuan untuk memperkenalkan dan memanfaatkan aplikasi Edmodo dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yakni untuk membantu guru bahasa Inggris di SMP Negeri 27 Makassar dalam mempersiapkan pembelajarannya dengan menggunakan aplikasi Edmodo, serta memperkenalkan dan melatih siswa SMP Negeri 27 Makassar dalam belajar bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan aplikasi Edmodo. Hasilnya terlihat bahwa guru mampu membuat dan mempersiapkan materi pembelajarannya dengan menggunakan Edmodo, dan siswa lebih tertarik dan termotivasi belajar bahasa Inggris dari rumah dengan menggunakan Edmodo. Hal itu diketahui dengan melihat materi pembelajaran beserta segala aktivitas pembelajaran dapat di buat dan disiapkan oleh guru dengan menggunakan aplikasi Edmodo sementara itu, antusiasme siswa dalam belajar juga terlihat tinggi dengan tingkat partisipatif mereka dalam belajar dan mengerjakan tugas-tugas yang diselesaikan dengan baik.

Abstract

Pemanfaatan aplikasi pada pembelajaran jarak jauh seperti yang dilakukan saat ini amatlah tepat sehingga proses pembelajaran dapat terus terselenggara dengan baik. Belajar dari rumah yang ditetapkan oleh pemerintah membuat penggunaan aplikasi pembelajaran berbasis teknologi online terus diminati dan menjadi pilihan yang tepat. Penggunaan aplikasi Schoology  merupakan salah satu portal yang digunakan dalam pembelajaran dalam hal ini pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. PKM ini dilaksanakan dengan tujuan untuk memanfaatkan aplikasi Schoology dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di SMP Negeri 1 Sungguminasa. PKM ini dilaksanakan untuk membantu siswa belajar bahasa Inggris dari rumah dengan menggunakan aplikasi Schoology yang diselenggarakan sebanyak 8 kali pertemuan. PKM ini juga bertujuan untuk membantu siswa meningkatkan pengetahuan dan kosakata bahasa Inggris mereka.  Hasilnya terlihat bahwa peserta didik tertarik dan termotivasi belajar bahasa Inggris dari rumah. Hal itu diketahui dengan menlihat tingkat partisipatif siswa yang tinggi dan tugas-tugas yang diselesaikan dengan baik. . Selanjutnya juga terlihat bahwa siswa memiliki pemahaman yang lebih baik akan pengetahuan dan kosakata bahasa Inggris.Kata kunci: aplikasi Schoology, pengetahuan, kosakata bahasa Inggris

Abstract

Vocational school graduates are expected to work or be absorbed into the world of work after completing theireducation at the school level. Therefore, the objective of English learning in vocational schools is that students have the abilityand competence to use English as a tool of communication both orally and written that are needed in the world of work.However, vocational students in particular students of SMKN 6 Makassar do not have adequate English knowledge, vocabularyand skills that they can use in work, especially students in the Hospitality and Tourism majors. This community service aims toassist 50 students in the Hospitality and Tourism Classes of SMKN 6 Makassar to gain knowledge, vocabulary and practicalsentences of English. The method used is 3P namely Presentation, Practice and Production. The assistance activities in learningEnglish were carried out for approximately 3 months from July to September 2019. The output targets were students in theHospitality and Tourism Classes having knowledge, vocabulary and practical sentences of English related to hospitality andtourism.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to identify the implementation of a prediction strategy to improve students' reading comprehension of English recount text and student responses in reading through a prediction strategy. The researcher used pre-experimental research and carried out pre-test, treatment and post-test designs and collected test-based data. The sample was a class VIII.D student at MTs. Negeri Luwu Timur, a total of 28 students in the academic year 2020/2021. This sample was taken randomly by lottery. Variables are dependent and independent variables. The data was analyzed using SPSS. The showed that class VIII.D student pre-test results were of sufficient value. The results of this study were that the mean value obtained by the students through the pre-test was (58,14) while the post-test was observed (82,29) as result, the significant value of the paired sample test is lower than the significant level, i.e. 0.000 <0.05. Then find the value of the table t of 1,673. This is because the t value is 40,616>1,673. From these data, it is shown that the use of the prediction strategy in improving students’ reading comprehension on recount text, it can be concluded from the above data that the student's reading comprehension has been improved by using the prediction strategy as a learning tool and students’ can be active in the learning process through the use of the prediction strategy.
