Abstract

This research aims to improve students’ reading comprehension in the narrative text by using jigsaw technique. The subject of this research was the eleventh grade of social class students at SMA Negeri 1 Modayag in academic year 2019-2020. This research of this study was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). The data used in this study was pre-test result, post-test, and observation sheet. This research wa conducted in two cycles, each consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The data were collected through qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data were data obtained by analyzing observations. Then, quantitative data were obtained from students’ pre-test and post-test scores. The result of this study indicated that there was an increase in students in reading narrative texts. The average of the pre-test was 48%. The mean of the first cycle was 58%, it showed that the scores and the mean in the first cycle were better that pre-test. The percentage of students and the mean in the first cycle were better than pre-test. The percentage of students with 75 or more points increases. In the post-test of cycle 1, 14 students passed or got score up to 75. In the post-test of cycle 2, students who got 75 points or more were 22 (100%) and an increase was about 88%. In other words, students’ reading comprehension in narrative texts increases. Keywords: reading comprehension, narrative text, jigsaw technique

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the level of students’ anxiety in speaking and the causes of students’ speaking anxiety in EFL class. The respondent of this research was the eleventh grade students of XI Science in MAN 1 Bitung which were consisted of 29 students. In this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method by using observation, questionnaire and interview to collect the data. During the implementation, the researcher utilized three steps of actions. The first action was to observe the students during their English class, the second action was to give the students questionnaire and the last action was to interview the students and the teachers. The level of anxiety was investigated through questionnaire adapted from Foreign Language Class Anxiety Scale (FLCAS). The result showed that 3% (one student) had high level of speaking English anxiety, 56% (sixteen students) had moderate level of speaking English anxiety and 41% (twelve students) had low level of speaking English anxiety. It means that most of the students experienced moderate anxiety when they speak English in class. The findings revealed that the causes of that situation including lack of English knowledge, lack of vocabulary, lack of practice, lack of confident, worried about making mistakes, worried being laughed at and afraid of being called arrogant. Therefore, it is important for the teacher to encourage and motivated the students and uses some techniques and games to help the students decrease their anxiousness.

Abstract

Writing plays an important role in language acquisition, promoting the students’ experiment to communicate their ideas and strengthen the language ability that they learn in class. However, the researcher found that students had low ability in writing. The research objectives were: (1) To describe the implementation of brainwriting strategy can improve students’ ability in writing recount text. (2) To identify the improvement of students’ ability in writing recount text by using brainwriting strategy. This research used a classroom action research design that conducts in two cycles. The research subject was X IPA 1 grade SMAN 1 Sangatta Selatan students. These research findings showed that: (1) The implementation of the brainwriting strategy where the students divide into some groups that consist of 6 or more participants, then every student write three ideas on the paper until 5 minutes the paper passed to the right person, just like that until all of the participants have got the paper. (2) The improvement of students’ ability to write recount text using brainwriting strategy could be seen from the comparison calculation between the total average cycle I and cycle II scores. The implementation of brainwriting strategy can improve the students’ ability to write recount text.
