Abstract

This study aimed to describe the pragmatic function of an Indonesian language teaching in Australia and describe the speech act strategies used by foreign teachers to teach Indonesian in Australia. It employs a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach to the pragmatic function construction in the classroom context. The data are negatively-constructed speeches of a teacher and students who join an Indonesia language learning program, The Apec Lesson Study Project, in Australia. Data are collected through documentation with extended techniques, listening, and recording. Meanwhile, the data are analyzed by using a method of padan pragmatics. The research results show that the pragmatic functions in Indonesian language teaching in Australia can be estimated into various categories and subcategories of speech acts: (1) combinative speech act, manifested into sub-speech acts asking-praising; and (2) directive speech act, manifested into sub-speech acts asking. These findings show how materials, methods, techniques are combined with speech constructions that are appropriate to the student's level. Meanwhile, the speech act strategy used by foreign teachers is a direct literal speech act strategy.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the mathematical problem-solving abilities of students with visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles in solving sequence and series questions based on IDEAL problem-solving steps. In this study, the research method used is qualitative. Grouping students based on their learning style through a student learning style questionnaire, namely visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles. Furthermore, data collection was carried out, namely holding a written test with sequences and series material. Then a problem-solving analysis was carried out from the answer data and interviews with the research subjects obtained. Data collection techniques used include Questionnaires, Tests, and Interviews. Meanwhile, in this study, the triangulation technique used is time triangulation. The results of the analysis and discussion show that students with a visual learning style have good abilities in solving mathematical problems. Students with a vimal learning style have no difficulty solving math problems based on the IDEAL Problem-Solving step. Meanwhile, students with auditory and kinesthetic learning styles could only carry out the first 2 steps of solving mathematical problems based on the IDEAL Problem-Solving step, namely the Identify Problem and Define Goal stages. From the research results, the following conclusions are obtained: First, in the type of visual learning style, students can carry out problem-solving based on the IDEAL Problem-Solving step well.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the stages of developing a STEM learning design with literacy-based Pop-Up Book media. Media-integrated instructional designs can facilitate students' mastery of the studied subject. The implementation of learning designs with creative media has not been widely applied during teaching and learning activities in class, especially in thematic learning with the 2013 curriculum. Pop-Up Book Media is creative media applied to literacy-based STEM learning designs in school. This study used a design-based research method. Data were collected through interviews, expert assessments, and questionnaires. Pop-Up Book media based on literacy has been designed to be implemented through STEM learning designs in elementary schools. Therefore this creative media can be applied by teachers in learning with the 2013 curriculum in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the form of greeting as a lingual marker of language politeness in elementary school teacher education study program students and its relationship to character education. The research methodology employed in this study is a qualitative descriptive approach. The dataset utilised in this research comprises WhatsApp conversations exchanged among students pursuing elementary school teacher education at Yogyakarta State University. These messages are analysed to assess the level of language politeness exhibited. The data sources for this research consisted of students enrolled in the Elementary School Teacher Education programme at Yogyakarta State University. The research employed a documentation-based data collection strategy. The aforementioned approach is employed for the purpose of recording WhatsApp chats within the context of elementary school teacher education students at Yogyakarta State University. The method employs a sophisticated approach involving the processes of recording, listening, and note-taking. The data analysis in this research employs the padan method, supplemented by pertinent theories and the agih method. The present study examines the various types of lingual politeness markers employed by students enrolled in the Elementary School Teacher Education programme at Yogyakarta State University. Specifically, the study focuses on three categories of politeness markers: religious greeting politeness markers, tribal politeness markers, and universal greeting politeness markers. This shows that the results of this study can be used as a basis in the preparation and development of teaching materials in character education.
