Abstract

Good personal hygiene is needed by young women, including during menstruation, to prevent problems or diseases in the reproductive organs. However, many young girls do not have sufficient knowledge regarding this issue. The problem of insufficient knowledge and practice of personal hygiene during menstruation was also found in the students of SMP Negeri 1 Amanuban Selatan. This school is located in South Central Timor (TTS) Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province. This service activity aims to increase the knowledge and practice of personal hygiene for young women during menstruation at SMP Negeri 1 Amanuban Selatan, TTS Regency, NTT. Activities included counseling, discussions, and demonstrations on personal hygiene during menstruation, distribution of personal hygiene kits and sanitary napkins to students, and initiation of the formation of Adolescent Health Cadre groups with teachers as mentors. The results of the service activities showed an increase in knowledge by 50% after counseling and a strong commitment from the students of SMP Negeri 1 Amanuban Selatan to practice personal hygiene during menstruation properly and correctly, and the willingness of teachers to guide and assist groups of adolescent health cadres formed after service activities. The active participation of students and teachers in youth health cadre groups is very important in ensuring the sustainability of the results of community service activities.

Abstract

Background: The negative impact of malnutrition is generally associated with impaired motor development, behavioural and cognitive development which results in decreased learning achievement and social skills. Aim: The purpose of this study was to examine the situation of child development and to assess the role of various factors related to the development of children under five years of age in various ecosystem zones in Papua Province. Method: The research was carried out in four districts in Papua representing three ecosystem zones, namely the mainland coast, the middle plains and the mountains. Data was collected through structured interviews, observations and field measurements. Analysis of the differences in variables between ecosystem zones used the smallest significant difference test and the Kruskal Wallis test. Meanwhile, the analysis of the impact of malnutrition on children's development used Structural Equation Modelling-Regression with a partial least square approach using the SmartPLS version 3.2.9 application. Findings: The prevalence of Papuan children suffering from developmental delays reached 77.7%, especially in language development, fine motor adaptive, and personal social. An increase in the degree of malnutrition in the form of stunting suppresses the development of children to be low, while an increase in the degree of sickness in children has the potential to worsen the degree of malnutrition by suppressing the nutritional intake of children to be low.

Abstract

Background: The catfish cultivating community plays an important role in fighting stunting in Timor Tengah Selatan, Kupang, and Manggarai Regencies. By encouraging people to increase their intake of protein from catfish, people increase their overall consumption of fish. Aim: This study aims to determine the perceptions of the village community towards the development of catfish farming to overcome stunting in Timor Tengah Selatan, Kupang, and Manggarai Regencies. Method: The method used in this study was a survey method, while the data collection technique in this study used a questionnaire and literature study. Findings: The results showed that in developing catfish farming, the positive response from the community towards freshwater fish in the Timor Tengah Selatan, Kupang, and Manggarai regions was significant. Of the 50 respondents, almost half said catfish farming was a good idea. As a result of poor marketing efforts and lack of public acceptance, many respondents believed the catfish industry would not be successful. More than half of the surveyed group or 61.67% believe that catfish marketing is inadequate. Moreover, 48.75% of respondents believe this industry will not be popular because people are not familiar with catfish and its related dishes.

Abstract

Malnutrition is a strategic problem in Indonesia, especially in Papua Province, which extends from urban to rural areas. The purpose of this study was to assess the situation of malnutrition and to find structural models of malnutrition in Papuan children in various ecosystem zones in Papua Province. The study was designed in a cross-sectional manner, where the selection of research sites used a multistage sampling procedure with stratification and cluster techniques. Data collection was done through structured interviews, observations, and field measurements. It used the least significant different test and Kruskal Wallis to determine whether there are differences in related variables between ecosystem zones. To test and assess the impact of malnutrition on child development, Structural Equation Modeling-Regression was used with a partial least squares approach. The results showed that the prevalence of undernourished children under five years old, short-nutrition, thin-nutrition, and fat-nutrition was widespread in all ecosystem zones. Malnutrition in the form of short children or stunting (TB/U) can be directly associated with social environmental factors. In order to minimize the problem of stunting in Papua, it is necessary to take steps, including improving the nutritional status and health of mothers and children, especially pregnant women, increasing access to food through a food-based approach, and intensifying program activities for basic health, environmental health, and clean water supply.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine the situation of children's quality of life and assess the role of various related factors to the quality of life of children in various ecosystem zones in Papua Province. The study was conducted in four districts representing three ecosystem zones, namely the mainland coastal zone (Merauke and Sarmi Regencies), the middle plain zone (Nabire Regency) and the mountain zone (Jayawijaya Regency). This research was designed cross-sectionally, where the selection of the research site used a multistage sampling procedure with stratification and cluster techniques.  Randomly involved 1481 sample households that had children under five for three zones. Data collection was carried out through structured interviews, observations and field measurements. To determine whether there are differences in related variables between ecosystem zones, the least significant different and Kruskal Wallis test is used. Testing and assessing  the impact  of malnutrition on child development, Structural Equation Modelling-Regression is used with a partial least square approach using the help of the SmartPLS application version 2.0.  The results showed that the population of Papuan children with the risk of quality of life disorders (at risk) reached 50.57% and was the largest in the mountainous zone. Generally, they have impaired negative mood function, while children in the mountainous zone have impaired motor, autonomic, cognitive, social and negative mood functions.

Abstract

The large number of stunting cases in the TTS area is caused by a lack of food security. Therefore, the development of freshwater fish farming is very important to support food security and prevent fainting in the region. This is because the fishing industry plays an important role in increasing food security; it also reduces stunting in the region. This study used a cross-sectional research design that observed and measured all variables simultaneously. The research results show that Indonesia has an urgent need to explore the untapped potential of fresh water fish food. This is because increasing their food security and improving their nutrition will help them cope with the country's current situation. One way that can be done is to encourage the use of fish farming foods that are well known to the public, especially foods that are popular among TTS residents.
