Abstract

Kura-kura Sulawesi (Leucocephalon yuwonoi) adalah satu dari dua jenis kura-kura endemik Sulawesi dengan penyebaran yang terbatas. Sejauh ini data natural historinya sangat minim, padahal sangat dibutuhkan dalam upaya penangkaran satwa yang berstatus kritis IUCN ini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap tentang pakan di alam beserta kandungan nutrisinya. Survei lapangan dilakukan di kawasan Bangkir dari tanggal 23 Mei sampai 5 Juni 2004 dan di Moutong dari tanggal 11 sampai 19 Oktober 2004. Data pakan di alam diperoleh dari analisis sampel feces dan hasil wawancara kepada para pemburu kura-kura beserta pengumpul. Kepastian nama jenis pakan diperoleh dengan melakukan identifikasi sampel tumbuhan pakan di Herbarium Bogoriense. Data kandungan nutrisi diperoleh melalui analisis proksimat sampel pakan yang terkoleksi selama survei. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 32 jenis tumbuhan yang jadi sumber pakan di alam, variasi kandungan nutrisi yang cukup besar, kandungan lemak rendah berkisar antara 0.74 - 8.33% (2.41+2.03) dari berat kering. Berdasarkan dominansi, keberadaan di habitat (multiple season) dan tingginya kandungan energi diduga kuat bahwa Colocasia esculenta, Limnocharis flava and Ipomoea aquatica merupakan pakan utama di alam.

Abstract

Sambar deer (Rusa unicolor) is the largest Indonesian deer species. The largest population of captivation is located at Penajam district, East Borneo (UPTD). First population was introduced in 1990 with four individuals. The use of molecular marker was aimed to identify and characterise the level of genetic diversity within the UPTD population as well as to identify a possible of botolneck population genetic status. This study discussed the relevance of the result for management purposes of captivation. The results indicated that sambar deer populatin (n=38) had an average genetic distance (d) in population as 0.006 with nucleotide diversity (Ï€) being 0.0159). A total of 43.48% of the population was homogeneous that showed no nucleotide differences among individuals.

Abstract

Organ reproduksi jantan yang berperan dalam reproduksi adalah testis. Struktur histologi pada organ reproduksi dapat menggambarkan karakterisasi dari suatu spesies. Penelitian ini menggunakan organ reproduksi jantan guna menentukan karakterisasi spesies Nycticebus coucang yang tersebar di kepulauan Sumatra dan sekitarnya. Material reproduksi yang digunakan adalah testis, bakulum dan sperma melalui sediaan histologi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan dari sediaan histologi testis diperoleh gambaran umum komposisi dari tubulus konturtus seminiferus diantaranya sel-sel spermatogenik yaitu spermatogonium, spermatosit primer, spermatosit sekunder, spermatid, dan spermatozoa. Ukuran panjang bakulum N. coucang dari ujung posterior ke ujung anterior 16,68 mm dan lebar dari lateral kiri ke kanan 3,45 mm serta panjang kepala sperma berkisar 1,2-1,6

Abstract

The objective of this study was to observe the daily behavior of Timor deer (Cervus timorensis). The study was conducted in Aertembaga village, Bitung-North Sulawesi for 30 days. Deer were kept out in the conventional coconut plantations under extensive care system.  Seven Timor deers were used in this study. The daily behavior were observed for their activities; as grazing, ruminating, lying, urinating, defecating, vocalizing, working and other activities. A time sampling method was used to record the behavior activities and observations were repeated in five time.  The respective percentage of daily activities of Timor deer for grazing, ruminating, lying, working, standing,   defecating,  urinating,  approaching  and other activities were 31.17; 14.63; 13.54; 6.23; 7.55; 8.51; 3.96; 7.915 and 6.48%. Abstract

ABSTRACTFeed Intake and Efficiency of Slow Loris (Nycticebus coucang) in Captivity. Study on feed intake and efficiency of captive slow loris (Nycticebus coucang) has been conducted at the Division of Zoolgy, Research Center for Biology – LIPI for five weeks. Three individuals were placed in three cages, with its sizes of 1.2 x 1.7 x 1.9 m (one cage) and 0.8 x 1.7 x 1.9 m (two cages). Feeds consisting of papaya, banana, coconut, passion fruit, guava, sweet corn, quail egg, and white bread, were given ad libitum. Average body weight of slow loris in the beginning of the study was 587 gram/head and at the end was 648.33 gram/head. Average of feed consumption was 317.26 gram/kgBW/day. Average of feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio (PER) was 0.0270 and 0.0945, respectively.Key words: Feed, slow loris, Nycticebus coucang, captivity, feed efficiency, PER.

Abstract

Genetic Diversity of Sambar Deer (Rusa unicolor) in Utilization and Implications for Conservation. The deer sambar (Rusa unicolor) is one of species of Genus Rusa, was widely distributed in South Asia antil South East Asia. This species in Indonesia was widely distributed in Kalimantan and Sumatra island, but now, the hunting, poaching and habitat loss have reduced its populations drasstically. In order to provide useful information for its conservations. The genetic diversity and population structure of the wild sambar deer was observed by analyzing the 962 bp long of fragment mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region (D-loop)fragment. The result detected, twenty different haplotypes from 22 samples from Borneo and Sumatra. Overall, sambar deer have a relatively high genetic diversity compared to other the ceervid species, with a haplotype diversity (h) 0.9870 and nucleotide diversity (ð) 2.931±0.260%.The genetic distance of Borneo populations (East Borneo) higher compared with Sumatra’s populations that is d = 0.018±0.003 on Borneo and d = 0.009±0.002 on Sumatra. The structure of phylogenetic tree showed that two populations were separate based on the haplotypes differences.Keywords: conservation, control region, genetic diversity, sambar deer.

Abstract

Slow lories is small size primates of the genus Nycticebus that are in endangered status. Habitat pressure andhigh trade as pet animals has made the population decline both quantitatively and qualitatively, therefore it isnecessary to save the slow lories through conservation action. Morphologically, the individuals are difficult tobe distinguished among the species, therefore making much harder in identification for conservation purposessuch as from confiscated individuals. Therefore molecular marker is needed through mitochondrial DNA usingCOI gene sequences analysis is needed for identification. This study used 24 samples of slow lories consistedof 2 from Kalimantan, 9 from Java and 13 from Sumatra. The result indicated that in the 660 bp there were 62variable sites with 15 haplotypes: 4 haplotypes of N. javanicus, 9 haplotypes N. coucang, and 2 haplotypes N.menagensis. Base on nucleotide variations at specific sites, it was formed haplotype differences among species.The average genetic distance between species showed that Kalimanatan population were closer to thepopulation of Sumatra (d= 0.042 ± 0.006) compared with Java population (d= 0.059 ± 0.009), whereas thegenetic distance within population showed the population of Java had low diversity (d= 0.002) with a meannucleotide differences 2.6. Thus Jawan slow loris (N. javanicus) should be conserved.Keywords: Nycticebus spp., molecular, COI, conservation, marker

Abstract

ABSTRACTFeeds and habitat utilization of Slow Loris (Nycicebus coucang) and Tarsier (Tarsiusbnncartus) in Pasir Panjang Forest, Central Kalimantan. This research was conducted inthe production forest of Saka and Padang Babuluh in Pangkalan Bun. Study sites werelocated at 9-42 m above sea level. Data being collected were the type of feed, nest sites andhabitat utilization. During the observation, 44 plants species from 17 families were identifiedbeing consumed and nest site by the slow lories. Twenty one species from 17 families wereidentified being habitat by the tarsier.
