Abstract

This paper discusses the issue of foreign English language teachers in the Tomini Bay area in Indonesia. Utilizing several theories such as the theory of empowerment and agency as well as teachers' identity development, this qualitative research presents a study with the interview data from 10 teachers who live and teach in the Tomini Bay area. The data were analyzed by coding the interview materials into several main areas of interest. From this, several themes emerged for discussion that seemed to be influential and contribute to understanding teachers and their experiences in the language teaching context. The study reveals that teachers' views of their remuneration, their views of teaching in this technology era and pandemic situation, and their views of local potential teaching resources are significantly different from teachers who are classified as 'empowered identity' than those who are not in the category. However, the necessity of government intervention in English language teaching success in their area emerges as a crucial factor viewed by all the 10 teachers' recollections. It is hoped that this paper discussion can reveal factors that should be considered in a model offered to develop EFL teachers and their identity development in the Tomini Bay area, which later affects the success of English teaching in the surroundings and subsequently impacts English language teaching success in Indonesia.

Abstract

The use of taboo words is strongly influenced by culture. In the growing discourse of use of taboo words in social reality, men are often portrayed to have discourteous traits and utter any form of taboo words when compared to women. However, a movie entitled Death Proof does not show the same trend. The present research aimed at investigating taboo words in the mentioned movie by focusing on their types and motives. Through the utilization of observation and documentation techniques, the data comprised utterances of the main characters that contained taboo words. The results revealed that the main characters employed taboos of profanity, obscenity, vulgarity, epithet and insult. Pertaining to women, they also fulfill those various classifications. Conversely, insult and profanity were the typical types men uttered during the movie. In regard to the motives of using taboo words, it was discovered that psychological, social and linguistic motives tend to stimulate male characters to utter taboo words, while women are merely affected by psychological and social  motives. From the results, the research concludes that female characters utter taboo words more variably than men. However, women’s variability on the production of taboo words is limited to certain situations, while men apply taboo words in multiple contexts.

Abstract

Abstract

Asaan Village is one of the villages in the Pagimana District, Luwuk Regency, Central Sulawesi Province, which is located 11 km to the south of the Pagimana District. The geographical conditions of the mountains and forest areas with an altitude of 200-500 meters above sea level and an uncertain climate such as changes in temperature, wind, result in frequent disturbances of lighting or blackouts so that people often have difficulty doing activities at night. Meanwhile, to deal with blackouts, people using kerosene lamps only have drawbacks, such as the high price of kerosene and steps in the market. This problem is the basis for carrying out community service activities, and by utilizing used materials such as coconut oil which has been used in the frying or used cooking process, this material is easy to obtain and is not purchased because it is only a waste material. Even though used cooking oil can be made as a lamp to replace electricity when there is a blackout. The service method used is a motivational approach and creative innovation through skills training for the Asaan village community. The results of this activity are 1) The community is assisted by training in making cheap and environmentally friendly lamp lamps, 2) There is alternative community lighting to overcome frequent blackouts, 3) Community creativity increases in processing used cooking oil as an efficient fuel. Keywords: community skills, lamps, used cooking oil.
