Abstract

Character building has become one of the government's program priorities through the mental revolution movement. The goal is to create a new mentality for the nation that is more productive, competitive and prosperous. This study aims to reveal the meaning and cultural values ​​contained in Muna folk songs as a model for building superior characters. Nine folk songs were collected as the object of this study entitled Daesalo Nekakawasa, O'Tampo, Witeno Wuna, Kaninindo Kamokula, O'Raha, Tongkuno, Damekatahi Liwu, O'Wuna, and Dapo Angka-Angkatao. The results indicate that the meanings and cultural values ​​contained in the songs are the existence of God, the Spirit of Building the Nation, Obedience to parents words. These values ​​and meanings can then be used to form superior characters, including forming religious, nationalist, mutual cooperation, and solidarity characters.

Abstract

This article reports the findings of a study analyzing the needs of Physics Education students to inform the syllabus design of English for Science course. The study employed a descriptive quantitative method and focused on present situation analysis, target situation analysis, and learning situation analysis. To collect the data for these analyses, a set of questionnaires was administered to sixty-four students, two lecturers, and three graduates. Data analysis involved the use of a percentage system and rating scale. The analysis revealed some significant findings related to the students’ needs. First, the students need the fours language skills and vocabulary in general science for the syllabus design. However, by rank, the skills to prioritize consist of reading, vocabulary, speaking, and writing. In addition, the students require some specific common-core abilities related to those skills, most of which are related to reading and writing skills. Lastly, the students want to learn those skills through the content in general science. For the syllabus design of English for Science, the study suggests a combination of skills-based syllabus and content-based syllabus.

Abstract

Idiomatic expression has an important role in constructing formative sentences. The aim of this research is to describe the idiomatic expression based on their forms and meanings. The descriptive qualitative method was used in this research; the data had been taken from the movie and analyzed them based on the Boatner and Gates theory. Technique of data collection was done by downloading, reading, watching, classifying and coding the data. After collecting the data, it was analyzed by presenting the data, describing the data, interpreting the data, and concluding. The results of this research showed that 16 idiomatic expressions found in Maleficent (Mistress of Evil) movie that classified in 3 forms, namely 9 lexemic idiomatic expression, which are divided in 4 classes, 1 verb idiomatic expression, 6 noun idiomatic expressions, 1 adjective idiomatic expression, 1 adverb idiomatic expression, 3 phrase idiomatic expressions, and 4 proverbs. Researcher found many idiomatic expressions in the form of nouns because in the movie all characters use explanatory adverbs where the noun functions as a participle. In a sentence, a noun can act as the subject, direct object, and indirect object of a clause, and can be a subject complement or object complement

Abstract

dan penularan penyakit kusta dipengaruhi oleh beberapa faktor diantaranya personal hygiene, intensitas kontak dengan penyakit kusta, riwayat kontak dan lama kontak dengan penderita kusta. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis personal hygiene dan riwayat kontak sebagai faktor risiko kejadian kusta di Kabupaten Kolaka. Rancangan penelitian ini adalah analitik observasional dengan desain penelitian menggunakan case control. Populasi penelitian adalah seluruh pasien kusta yang sedang berobat dan pasien yang telah dinyatakan sembuh. Sampel diperoleh dengan teknik total sampling. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan uji Odds Ratio dan Uji X2 dan dianggap bermakna jika nilai p < 0,05. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 32/56 (57,1%) memiliki personal hygiene yang berisiko dengan nilai p 0,001, OR = 4,00, LL-UL (1,791-8,935). Riwayat kontak dengan penderita kusta berisiko sebanyak 41/56 (73,2%) dengan nilai p 0,00, OR = 6,27, LL-UL (2,759-14,254). Dapat disimpulkan bahwa personal hygiene dan riwayat kontak merupakan faktor risiko kejadian kusta di Kabupaten Kolaka

Abstract

The research is about the use of perlocutionary acts in “The Croods” movie script. The research aims to describe the use of the perlocutionary acts used by the character that found in “The Croods” movie script based on Searle's classification of speech act. The researcher used descriptive qualitative. The data include an utterance from the characters' conversation and that utterance produces the perlocutionary acts in the movie script. In conducting the research, the researcher read the script and watch the movie intensively and make notes on the pages contain the required data. Then the researcher classify the data into five classifications; declarative, assertive, expressive, directive and commissive then a result of these classifications is the perlocutionary act, the researcher mentions an utterance contains the five classifications then explain the perlocutionary act. The result of this research shows there are twenty-nine data contain the perlocutionary act. The research revealed the five classifications of speech act that in the movie script produce the effect of the perlocutionary. Based on the data that occur in “The Croods” movie script, it is indicated that all of the characters in “The Croods” movie script are use the perlocutionary act.

Abstract

This current study is aiming to find out the flouting and violating of maxims produced by characters in Deadpool 2 movie. The theory uses in this study is theory of Grice about maxims . Descriptive qualitative method is used to analyze the data. Steps in analyzing the data consist of presenting the data, describing the context of the data, interpreting the data and making the conclusion. Based on the research, It found that there are four types of flouting and violating the Grice’s maxims which derived from 22 data. 15 data that flouted the Grice’s maxims, they are 1 data flouting maxim of quantity, 6 data flouting maxim of quality, 1data flouting maxim of relation, and 7 data flouting maxim of manner. 7 data that violated the Grice’s maxims, they are 1 violating maxim of quantity, 1 violating maxim of quality, 3 violating maxim of relation, and 2 violating maxim of manner. Flouting maxim of manner becomes the most dominant types of flouting maxim, and violating maxim of relation becomes the most dominant types of violating maxim in the movie.

Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the violating of cooperative principles presented in the “Alice in Wonderland” movie script. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from the utterances among the characters in the “Alice in Wonderland” movie script. The data were collected by searching and downloading the movie, watching the movie, reading the movie script, coding the data, re-watching, and re-reading, capturing of image and data reduction. The method of analyzing data consists of presenting the data into conversation and image, describing the data, interpreting data, and making conclusions to answer the research questions. The result of this research shows there are 18 violations of the maxims, they are: the violating maxim of quantity is 8 data, it happens because the speaker gives excessive or little information; the violating maxim of quality is 4 data, it happens because the speaker gives untruth information or say something lie; the violating maxim of relevance are 4 data, it happens because the speaker gives irrelevant information; the violating maxim of manner are 2 data, it happens because the speaker gives unclear or ambiguous information. The most violated maxim is the maxim of quantity.

Abstract

This study aims at revealing the perlocutionary act that is used in the movie “Catch Me if You Can”. The movie contains many perlocutionary acts which are cheating and convincing acts. Both acts are done by the main character and other minor characters who have conversations with the main character. The perlocutionary act which is analyzed in this study is limited to only convincing and cheating acts because both acts are done many times by the main character and other characters. The writer applies the qualitative descriptive method to analyze the study. The data collection technique of this study includes downloading, watching, classifying, and coding the data. To analyze the collected data the writer applies several techniques such as identifying the data, describing the data, categorizing the data, analyzing, and concluding the data. The result of this study is there are 7 data (38%) of the convincing acts and 13 data (72%) of the cheating acts. The cheating act is the most dominant act found in the movie and mostly is done by Frank as the main character. Frank goes around the aviation company as a co-pilot to be able to cash the fraudulent checks. The bank and the aviation company end up believing in Frank and cash the checks for him. Frank does the cheating act of perlocutionary act to make other people do what he wants them to do.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the form of conversational implicature in the Interview between Oprah Winfrey and Meghan Markle. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The subject of this research is Oprah Winfrey and Meghan Markle. The object of the research is the utterances contained in the Interview between Oprah Winfrey and Meghan Markle. The data was collected through searching, downloading, reading script, note taking, classifying, and coding the data to achieve a complete conclusion in the form of conversational implicature in the interview between Oprah Winfrey and Meghan Markle. The results of the study show three forms, namely satire (6 data), protest (3 data), and statement (14 data). Meghan uses this form because she doesn't want to be silent about the problems she has with the royals who played an active role in perpetuating lies about her and Prince Harry.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to identify and describe the use of conversational implicature in the “Burnt” movie. The researcher used the implicature theory by Paul Grice to analyze the conversational implicature. The research methodology used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method. The source of this research is the data from the “Burnt” movie. To collect data, the researcher used several steps: watching the movie, pausing the movie that has conversational implicature, annotating the data, screenshotting the data, coding the data and the last is reducing the data to present the needed data only. The result shows that both generalized and particularized conversational implicature is identified with the flouting maxim and the utterance that flouts the maxim has speech function. The use of conversational implicature in the character’s utterances is such as useful to conduct good communication in the workplace. The characters use conversational implicature to make the intention conveyed politely and delivered quickly.
