Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Gone With The Wind(GWTW) (1936) is an american novel which recorded the imagined experience of Black slavery and Civil War in the United States of America (pre and post-1865) based on the eye of WhiteSoutherner.Centered upon the SouthernWhite female protagonist character, the author sought to civilize the Old South life in antebellum Americawhich owned the peculiar institution of slavery and condemned the Civil War as it was rumaging the harmonious life in the Old South. The problematic case to be exposed in study is why and how the novel seemed seeks to glorify the life in antebellum Souththat embraced racism in the odd slavery institution? By hegemony perspective, this study found that the effort to civilize the Old Southin this novel is a way to persist the colonial White narration about the slavery institution. Through the depiction of Southern Belle and gentlemen hero, the natural landscape, the harmonious relation between Black slave and White master affirmed the life in the South was harmoniuos and stable. It means that the protes towards the Black enslavement and Civil War became irrelevant. To sum up, the discourse of White colonialisme to legitimate their power as a ruler in society is continued to be constructed in post-colonial discourse, as this novel appeared in the twenty century.

Abstract

(Title: Just Like Black, Only Better: Poor White in Antebellum South of America Depicted in Solomon Northup’s Novel “Twelve Years as A Slave”). Antebellum era, the period before the Civil War occured, or before the year 1861, in the United States is used to relate to the enslavement of black American. In fact, the era was not merely about black, but also poor white. This study is purposed to describe the poor whites’ life in antebellum America as reflected in Twelve Years As A Slave (1855), a narrative biography novel written by Solomon Northup. Set up the story in New York, Washingotn DC, and New Orleans, the author (and focalizer at once) told the story based on his own experience as a black who was captivated and sold into slavery for twelve years. Although the novel centered its story on black character, it also reflected the life of poor whites who were also being “enslaved” by their white counterparts. Through sociology of literature perspective, this study reveals that the character of poor white that represented through John M. Tibeats, Armsby, and James H. Burch came from Great Britain especially from Ireland. Mostly, they moved to America as incarcerated people. They lived under the poverty and some of them were the vagrants and petty criminals. Poor white during antebellum era in America was positioned in the lower social level. They were “enslaved” by their white master but more better compared to the black slaves. It can be noticed that poor white were positioned in low social level because of the socio-economic problem, while blacks were race and racism. Keywords: antebellum America, poor white, slavery, social class, American literature

Abstract

This study is intended to analyze the persistence of African American stereotype in the contemporary slavery-themed novel authored by Valerie Martin, Property (2003). Valerie Martin is a white author, who seems to have changed the slavery discourse, but the stereotyping of African Americans is still there and built in a new form of stereotyping. Postcolonial analysis showed that the stereotyping of African Americansas ‘other’ existed in direct stereotyping and indirect stereotyping. Direct stereotyping is that the author directly uses the pejorative language and symbols in forming the African American character, meanwhile indirect stereotyping is the author using the shift of discourse that seemed worthy in describing the African American character, but in the same time it affirms the stereotype of the African American identity as inferior still exists, even in the so-called Post-racial era in the United States. Keywords: Representation, Stereotyping, Identity, Race, African American

Abstract

Since capitalism-patriarchy is viewed as the specter of the problem of the emergence of injustice, it has been raising efforts to realize social justice and environmental sustainability through restructuring of the human mindset towards nature and fellow humans. The principle of capitalism-patriarchy has led to a culture of death and destruction because it is characterized by domination, power, exploitation, and environmental damage. This research sought to describe the criticism of patriarchal-capitalism and the subsistence perspective shown in the novel Aroma Karsa written by Dewi Lestari. Through ecofeminism proposed by Vandana Shiva and Mies, this study found that the power of the capitalist-patriarchal was represented through male figures such as; Jati Wesi, Khalil, and Ferdi, who utilize nature and parts of women's bodies for financial interests and sexual desires through the production of the most expensive perfume, make certain plant species endangered and oppressed. Their cultivation efforts cannot be separated from profit orientation. The perspective of subsistence is then carried out by women characters to preserve, protect, and utilize natural resources as needed out of exaggeration. It is illustrated through female figures; Janirah, Raras, and Tanaya Suma who tried to stem the power and domination of men over nature and women's bodies for the benefit of capital. The subsistence perspective in the novel Aroma Karsa by Dewi Lestari emphasizes the preservation and protection of nature for the sake of mutual needs and comfort, and it is women who understand more about nature more than men.

Abstract

This paper is about Anwar Ibrahim and politics in Malaysia. Anwar Ibrahim was born in a village near Penang, Malaysia on August 10, 1947. His parents were a hospital medical assistant and a housewife who became engaged in local grassroots politics early on. Anwar became involved in politics in 1971 as a pro-Islam student leader, founding the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia. He remained its president until 1982.67 Although he was a leader of opposition groups – in fact he was jailed under the Internal Security Act for two years for organizing mass demonstrations in 1974 – Anwar accepted an invitation in 1982 to join the ruling United Malays National Organization (UMNO). Rising quickly through the ranks of the party, he served in succession as the Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports in 1983, of Agriculture in 1984, of Education from 1986-91, and was appointed Minister of Finance from 1991-98. In 1993, Anwar also became Deputy Prime Minister for Prime Minister Mahathir.68 He served as Deputy Prime Minister until 1998, when he was dismissed, on the pre-text of corruption and sodomy allegations, because of major disagreements with Mahathir about the political and economic direction of Malaysia’s future.
