Abstract

Experiment is integral part of chemistry. Through experiments, everyone can verify and or find something new as an alternative solution to attract interest in meaningful chemistry learning. Innovative experimental packaging can be done with Small Scale Chemistry (SSC) to establish the importance of understanding and application related to the use of small amounts of reagents and reduce waste produced during chemistry practicum. This study aims to explore and analyze the science process skills of the second semester students of Chemistry Education Study Program, Sanata Dharma University, which focused for chemistry grade 12 in water electrolysis using straws and mini test tubes as physical chemistry’s experiment and formation reaction of silver mirror uses vial bottle and mirror media as experiment of organic chemistry. The results show that students’ science process skills which includes observation skills with good average score, prediction skills with good enough average score, skills in interpreting data with good average scores, and communication skills with good average score for two kind of experiments conducted. In general, students were enthusiastic in carrying out the two SSC experiments. The students also evaluate the experiments to be able to help develop and improve their soft skills in chemistry learning. Abstract

The obesity index is a parameter that describes general and central obesity. Obesity prevalence tends to increase in the rural areas of Indonesia. The increased prevalence of obesity is correlated with increased cardiovascular prevalence and diabetes. Dyslipidemia is also a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and is closely related to obesity. Obesity is an accumulation of excessive triglyceride levels and stored in adipose tissue that can contribute to the onset of coronary heart disease. This was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. Research subjects were the rural community in Bonjoroyo village, Kulonprogo Regency, DIY which fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The data obtained were obesity index data (Body Mass Index/BMI, Waist Circle/LP, Waist Round/RLPP Ratio, Body Waist Ratio/RLPTB) and triglyceride levels which were then analyzed statistically with normality test and continued with correlation Spearman test with a 95% confidence level. The results showed that BMI, LP, and RLPTB measurements were significantly positively correlated with moderate-to-weak correlation strength in fasting blood triglyceride levels (r:0.435; p:0.000; r:0.362; p:0.002; r:0.347; p:0.004) in males. Measurements of BMI, LP, and RLPTB were positively correlated with a weak correlation strength against fasting blood triglyceride levels (r: 0.193; p: 0.028; r: 0.226; p: 0.010; r: 0.214; p: 0.014) in females. The RLPP obesity index did not show significant correlations to fasting triglyceride levels in rural communities.

Abstract

Chemistry practicum does not have to be complicated and requires expensive apparatus and chemicals, and is considered not environmentally friendly. The concept of small scale chemistry practicum is one of appropriate technology that is packaged elegantly to introduce and embed the principles of green chemistry in every chemistry experiments, and also to enhance the concepts of chemistry through verification and scientific discovery. This study aims to create the newest product, the small scale chemistry practicum module to identify the ability of the students of chemistry education study program, Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta in formulating predictions on phenomenon based on the insights they have, making direct observations through small scale chemistry practicum, and explaining the results of observations and emphasis on concepts in detail and depth. This research is the development research with the model of Analysis, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate (ADDIE). Data were analyzed by descriptive analysis and Rasch Model. The results of the study show that the product developed has a perfect and feasible level of readability to be tested. From the content aspect, it presented in perfect criteria, as well as the construction aspect and aspect of language, also shows good value. The students already have quite an excellent ability to predict (average score= 76), observe (average score= 88.5), and explain (average score 87.5). Also, it was noted that students enthusiastically applied POE, and the results of POE students show good person reliability value (0.88) in small scale chemistry experiments. The product developed has been valid, effective, and practical for use in experiments according to experts and teachers, and good student responses (Cronbach's alpha value= 0.92) to the product.

Abstract

Abstract: Antibiotics will be used safely when it is used rationally, and rational use of antibioticsneed an appropriately of knowledge. In accordance to achieve appropriately knowledge aboutantibiotics, it is important to identify the level of knowledge about antibiotics to improve aneducational method and material about antibiotics. As a qualitative study using focus groupdiscussion (FGD) among residence of Four Sub-district in Yogyakarta City, e.g.: Mergangsan,Gondokusuman, Umbulhardjo and Kotagede. There was eight key person of each sub districtinvolved in the study. The inclusion criteria are: Residence of one of the four sub-districts withage above 17 years old, willing to attend the activities. The exclusion criteria are: residence withPharmacy education background, moving limited and mental disability. Results of the studyshow the characteristic demography of the participants are: 5 Female and 3 Male, age rangefrom 40 to 52 years old, with educational level: 5 participants are high school graduated and 3participants are University graduated. All of participants are key person of each sub districtwhose familiar with the residences and the environmental where they are living. All ofparticipants mention that they do not know about antibiotics et all including resistance and otherrisks of irrational use of antibiotics. All of participants asking for complete information aboutantibiotics which simple, accessible and could be socialized through the routine activities inevery sub district e.g.: PKK (mothers gathering). In conclusion, the level of participants'knowledge about antibiotics is still low, and need to be improved. Complete information aboutantibiotics in a simple form has to be developed as an educational material. Keywords: Focus Group Discussion, Antibiotics, Knowledge

Abstract

The practicum management of chemistry teachers at senior high school on the topic of acid-base is quite good, although the majority are monotonous in testing acid-base properties using large amounts of solution. Some schools only limit the practical use of extracts from various flowers with certain color pigments, then tested on several samples and used as natural indicators, but have not paid attention to the number of reagents and estimated waste generated. The purpose of this activity is to improve the quality of classical practicum and the attractiveness of acid-base indicators from materials that refer to the principles of green chemistry. Service activities are carried out in training through the practicum method of making acid-base indicators using purple cabbage extract, sodium alginate, and 1% CaCl2 solution. This training provides a new and innovative description of the formation of purple cabbage extract gel as an acid-base indicator in the form of red balls under acidic conditions and green under alkaline conditions. Chemistry teachers were very happy and felt that this practicum was simple and interesting to be packaged and brought to the routine practicum conducted at schools.
