Abstract

The investigation of error is quite challenging to be conducted at school and university. Interestingly, with the technology development, detecting error can be conducted by using an automated writing evaluation program. This study aimed to analyze the errors in writing by applying an automated writing evaluation program. This study applied a mixed methods research with exploratory design. The total of 48 undergraduate students participated in this study and each student submitted one essay which was then re-submitted to the automated writing evaluation program. As the result, there are 484 errors detected by the program which came from 23 types of errors. However, the program still left some errors undetected with the total number of 158 errors which came from 24 types of errors; 13 types of errors have been identified and 11 types of errors have not been identified by the program. From the result of the program, the use of automated writing evaluation program in detecting error seems giving some benefits for the user. However, the application of this program still needs the teacher and lecturer’s supervision to reduce the weaknesses of the program in detecting the errors.

Abstract

The implementation of 2013 curriculum results in a number of consequences in teachers’ negative conceptions of the peer-assessment implementation in the classroom. This current study aimed at revealing English teachers’ perspectives of peer-assessment as an assessment method in assessing students’ affective aspects. A survey research was conducted in the study which deployed questionnaires with 30 statements. 30 English teachers who applied 2013 Curriculum in their teaching and learning process participated in this study and the results exposed that most of these English teachers perceive positively the implementation of peer-assessment regarding its relation with character education and students’ attitude towards peer assessment. However, the application of peer-assessment for assessing students’ affective aspect still needs to be improved since the fairness of peer-assessment application is still questionable by the teachers. Therefore, further development of peer-assessment is required in order to promote its positive aspects.

Abstract

As one of the negative impacts of technology development, the easy access to any information on the internet creates a new problem on academic integrity, in which the students take other’s works and claim as theirs. This phenomenon is termed as plagiarism which is against the academic ethics and honesty. Many universities have fought back the plagiarism cases and used plagiarism detection software as their tools in detecting plagiarism. Turnitin, as one of plagiarism detection software widely used in many universities, has been claimed as effective software in detecting plagiarism. However, prior studies have also revealed its inaccuracy in dealing with plagiarism cases. Reflecting from the both views of Turnitin, students’ view on its utilization may bring an essential consideration on the existence of Turnitin in detecting plagiarism. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the utilization of Turnitin based on students’ perspective and explored their responses and perceptions toward plagiarism detected by Turnitin. A case study was conducted in one classroom consisted of 20 EFL students in a university in Bandung, Indonesia. The data were taken from self-reflection questionnaire and the result shows that many students had unexpected results due to their misunderstanding about plagiarism and Turnitin system. It led to students’ unsatisfying responses toward their result of similarity percentage from Turnitin. Even though several benefits on writing skill improvement were found by the students, the inaccuracy result of Turnitin evaluation raised their negative attitude toward its utilization as well. Therefore, equal understanding between the lecturer and the students on plagiarism and Turnitin system is needed. Moreover, lecturer’s cross-checking, feedback on students’ academic writing, and additional change on the system configuration in detecting plagiarism are required to avoid any misconception of plagiarism. Further research on different respondents or different plagiarism detection software is recommended to be conducted.

Abstract

A good education is not only about academics, but also the positive social interaction in classroom. Therefore, there is a need to build rapport in classroom interaction. In building rapport, EFL teachers need to conduct several activities, and through self-assessment, teachers can monitor and evaluate their own teaching for professional development. However, self-assessment instrument for building rapport has not been developed yet by any researchers. To fill the needs, this study is established to construct a self-assessment for teacher in building rapport in EFL classroom. By applying design research from a curriculum perspective, the results revealed a self-assessment instrument of maintaining rapport for EFL teacher. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient (α = .928) of this instrument indicated high reliability and the instrument can be considered a reliable instrument to be used for the study sample. EFL teachers can do self-monitoring and self-evaluation on their rapport building in classroom interaction. Additionally, further research in investigating the effect of using this instrument in assessing teacher’s quality is required.

Abstract

Interactive video as one technology product provides an opportunity to enrich students' learning experience. The current study aimed to identify students' perception of interactive video utilization in English for tourism business classes and students' preference in applying interactive video in learning English for tourism business. The interactive videos were embedded in the learning management system, and the students had to utilize them individually. This study employed mixed-method research with an explanatory design. The data were gained through an administering questionnaire survey to 34 students majoring in the Hospitality program and analyzed using descriptive statistics by calculating the frequency of the answer to each question. Then, an interview was also conducted with several students to gain a further explanation of their learning media preferences. The results showed that the students perceived the interactive video positively based on its question layout, quality, and user interface. Furthermore, 94.1% of the students prefer to learn with interactive video than video. The students claimed that the interactive video helps them remember the learning material better, guides them to understand the material, encourages them to focus while watching the video, and makes the learning process more exciting. However, one student argued that the questions needed to be fully understood, and another highlighted the rewind button's unavailability. The result of the study indicated that the utilization of interactive video could be a beneficial learning tool in teaching English to the tourism business. In contrast, the English teacher or lecturer should also consider the students' freedom of learning.

Abstract

In light of seeking the proper e-assessment media, the Quizizz application may offer some features supporting the online assessment process. However, potential issues on the obstacles faced in using the application for e-assessment have yet to be deeply investigated. The current study investigated the potential challenges in utilizing Quizizz as a formative e-assessment media in English for Tour Operations class. The current study took place in one vocational higher education. Thirty-eight vocational students were invited to participate in the study, but only 30 vocational students agreed to consent. The current study applied a qualitative approach and took a case study design. Classroom observation, questionnaire distribution, and interviews were conducted to gain the data. For the data analysis, the current study implemented three qualitative data analysis phases: reducing data, displaying data, and drawing conclusions. As a result, the current study revealed that most vocational students experienced some challenges using Quizizz during the e-assessment process. They admitted that they had internet connection problems, limited time duration, device problems, and technical skill problems. It indicated that the application could raise potential problems during the e-assessment process. During the utilization of this application, the English teacher or lecturer needs to reassure the vocational students' capacity to take the e-assessment and to offer any assistance for students facing problems during the e-assessment process.
