Abstract

Penelitian ini melibatkan 62 siswa dari kelas delapan MTs. Negeri 1 Palu sebagai sampel. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui efektivitas teknik dictogloss dalam meningkatkan pemahaman mendengarkan siswa kelas delapan MTs. Negeri 1 Palu. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian eksperimen semu sebagai desain penelitian yang terdiri dari dua kelompok yaitu VIII A sebagai kelompok eksperimen dan VIII B sebagai kelompok kontrol. Instrumen penelitian ini adalah tes (pre-test dan post-test). Tes terdiri dari 15 item tes selesai dan tes esai 5 item, totalnya adalah 20 item. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam pemahaman mendengarkan siswa antara kelompok eksperimen yang diajarkan menggunakan teknik dictogloss dan kelompok kontrol yang diajarkan tanpa teknik dictogloss. Nilai rata-rata post-test dari kelompok eksperimen adalah 87,61 sedangkan skor rata-rata dari kelompok kontrol adalah 71,87. Hasil uji-t menunjukkan bahwa nilai t-hitung lebih tinggi dari nilai-t tabel (2,654> 2.000). Ini berarti bahwa penggunaan teknik dictogloss efektif untuk meningkatkan pemahaman mendengarkan siswa dari siswa kelas delapan MTs Negeri 1 Palu. Kesimpulannya, hipotesis penelitian diterima. Kata kunci: Meningkatkan, Pemahaman Mendengarkan, Teknik Dictogloss.

Abstract

This research was conducted at the Seventh Grade students of MTs. Negeri 1 Palu. It was quasi experimental research as design. The sample was Seventh B and Seventh C consisting 30 students each. The data was collected from the Test (Pre-test and Post-test). The findings of the research shows that the application of tree technique can increase students’ Vocabulary mastery. The result of pretest shows the average score of the experimental group is 65.13, while the average score of the control group is 72.92. Meanwhile, the result of the posttest reveales that the average score of the experimental group is 74.59, while in the average score of the control group is 68.06. The difference in vocabulary scores of the experimental group and the control group is 6.53. It shows that the average score of the experimental group is higher than the control group. Using t-test, the calculated  t-value is found 7.287. It is higher than the t-table value which is 2.019. From the calculation, it can be stated that there is a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group. The researcher concludes that the students can increase their vocabulary mastery through the use of tree technique. Furthermore, with this technique the students are able to explore their new vocabularies.Key terms: Tree Technique, Vocabulary Mastery, Quasi Experimental.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa dalam pelajaran bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan teknik Scanning. Penelitian ini dirancang sebagai penelitian eksperimental semu. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII SMPN 14 Palu dan sampel adalah 56 siswa yang terdiri dari 28 siswa dari kelas Cut Nyak Dien dan 28 siswa dari kelas Hasanudin. Sampel diambil menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Siswa dari kelas Cut Nyak Dien diklasifikasikan ke dalam kelompok eksperimen, sedangkan siswa kelas Hasanudin  ke dalam kelompok kontrol. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa t-hitung adalah 3,268. Dengan menggunakan tingkat signifikansi 0,05 dan tingkat kebebasan adalah 54, t-tabel yang ditemukan adalah 2,015. Hasil ini menunjukkan nilai t-hitung lebih tinggi dari nilai t-tabel. Ini berarti hipotesis penelitian diterima. Dengan kata lain, penerapan teknik pemindaian dapat secara efektif meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa.Kata kunci: Peningkatan, Pemahaman Membaca, Teknik Scanning

Abstract

A language is an important tool in communication. To produce a smooth relationship between countries that have different languages, the English language functions as Lingua Franca. To understand the information in English, a good understanding is needed. Being able to translate English texts is one of the basic forms of understanding itself. Unfortunately, numerous English language learners; from junior high schools to university levels, are still experiencing problems in this translation. This study aims to uncover the strategies of students in translating English texts into Indonesian by using the Thinking Aloud Protocol method. The subjects of this study were students in semester V (five) who had gone through Structure I to Structure IV subjects. This research was conducted in the scope of the University of Muhammadiyah Palu. From this research, the most widely used translation strategy is done by students as well as the prototype of the translation process to produce good translations

Abstract

Fulltime students have more free time than working students. They can spare a lot of time on doing tasks from their lecturers and spend the rest to play or to do any other activity they like. While working students must share their time wisely to make a balance of studying and working. The hardship of balancing these two states in some ways, affects students’ achievement in class. To get better achievement, there are many influencing factors. One of them is motivation. Coming across this situation, it becomes an interesting matter to find out correlation of students’ employment status and achievement, students’ motivation and achievement, and correlation of students’ employment status and motivation simultaneously on achievement.  Keywords: Correlation, Employment Status, Motivation, Achievement.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims at improving students’ reading comprehension in English lesson by using scanning technique. This research is design as a quasi-experimental research. Population of this research was grade VIII students of SMPN 14 Palu and sample was 56 students that consist of 28 students from Cut Nyak Dien class and 28 students from Hasanudin class. The sample was taken by applying purposive sampling technique. Students from Cut Nyak Dien class are classified into experimental group, while Hasanudin class’ students are into control group. Research findings show that the t-counted was 3.268. By using level of significance 0.05 and the degree of freedom was 54, the t-table found is 2.015. This result indicates the t-counted value was higher than the t-table value. It means that the research hypothesis is accepted. In other words, the application of the scanning technique can effectively improve students’ reading comprehension.

Ini berarti bahwa penggunaan teknik dictogloss efektif untuk meningkatkan pemahaman mendengarkan siswa dari siswa kelas delapan MTs Negeri 1 Palu. Abstract

Despite many studies on this topic, it is a rare report that EFL students need help interpreting English to Bahasa or Bahasa to English. This study aims to reveal the challenges faced by students in interpreting and find the most appropriate solution to overcoming these challenges. The subject of this research is the fifth-semester students of the English Education Study Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Palu. The instrument employs 10 statement items related to the difficulties that a novice interpreter might experience. The result shows that the students faced difficulties such as lack of vocabulary, terms translation, finding equivalent words, difficulty understanding pronunciation, mastery of the topic, remembering, limited time, anxiety, and concentration. While for the interpretation of numbers, the sample did not rate this as a difficulty. This study implies that teacher-educators to develop reading habits to overcome the lack of vocabulary by many models. Teacher-educators can use the original language, improve an equally good level of mastery in the source language and the target language, strengthen pronunciation skills, understand pre-condition in advance, take notes to face the memorization problem, broaden knowledge, have good preparation, realize the source of anxiety, mastering the topic to help reducing anxiety, having an excellent listening skill and self-control as the solution for concentration problem.

Abstract

This research aims at identifying the slang words in the movie Twenty One and Over. It also aims at defining the meaning and classifying types of slang words. This research is a qualitative descriptive method. The data source of the research is the researchers themselves and the movie Twenty One and Over. As a result, the researchers found that there are slang words often used in the movie. Each slang word has its meaning, described in this article. Those slang words are classified into three types of slang. They are society slang, workmen's slang, and public house slang.
