Abstract

Abstract

Kayu jawa plants are one type of traditional plant that is often used to treat wounds, both internal and external wounds. This plant has been shown to have anti-microbial, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Flavonoid compounds have anti-inflammatory activity by protecting erythrocyte membranes against membrane damage causing hemolysis because flavonoids can inhibit inflammatory mediators and free radicals. This study aims to determine the effect of the administration of simple patch from Kayu Jawa leaves extract (Lannea coromandelica Houtt. (Merr.)) On wound healing in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) by looking at the extent of the wound closure and changes in wound morphology compared to controls. This study used a laboratory experimental method with 25 rats as test animals divided into 5 treatment groups, namely 3 treatment groups (simple patch from 2.5% kayu jawa leaves extract, simple patch from 5% kayu jawa leaves extract, and simple patch from 10% kayu jawa leaves extract), 1 positive control group (simple patch from povidone iodine) and 1 negative control group (simple patch without kayu jawa leaves extract). The conclusions of the study was the administration of 5% Kayu Jawa leaves extract gave the best effect in accelerating wound healing.

Abstract

Thrombocytopenia is the most common hemostatic disorder acquired in dogs and can be a life-threatening. Guava fruit and leaves extract are believed to improve thrombocyte counts. The purpose of this study was to prove that administration of guava juice could improve  thrombocyte count in mice that have thrombocytopenia after induced by chloramphenicol. We were used 24 mice as samples divided into 4 groups : KS group (given aquades for 12 days), KN group (induced by chloramphenicol for 7 days, then aquades on next 5 days), group P1 (induced by chloramphenicol for 7 days then guava juice 5 g/ml concentration on 5 next day); and group P2 (induced by chloramphenicol for 7 days then guava juice 10 g/ml concentration on the next 5 days). Thrombocyte count was measured three times, before treatment (day 0), after chloramphenicol induction (day 7), and after guava juice (day 12). Data of thrombocyte count was analyzed using one way Anova and Post Hoc LSD test. The results showed that the guava juice (Psidium guajava L.) concentration of 5 g/ml and 10 g/ml had significant effect (p <0,05) to increase platelet numbers  in mice after induced by chlorampenicol dose 30mg/30grBW.

Abstract

Escherichia coli is a gram negative bacterium which is a normal flora in the digestive tract. In birds, this bacterium causes a disease known as colibasillosis. Antibiotics are generally used, but excessive use will cause residues and antibiotic resistance. To avoid resistance or residue, an alternative treatment is needed. The combination of propolis and ginger extract is very promising to develop because both have a synergistic effect as antimicrobials. The research aims to determine the effect of the combination extract on Escherichia coli bacteria in vitro. We used 8 groups which contain combinations of propolis and ginger extract. We used amoxicillin disk as a positive control, 1% Na CMC as a negative control. The results showed a combination of ginger and propolis extract showed good inhibitory activity against Escherichia coli in all groups> 6mm., and the highest inhibitory activity was K3 (5% propolis combination and 15% ginger extract) with 8.7 mm. The combination of propolis and ginger extract has the potential to be used as an alternative antibiotic to prevent antibiotic resistance from synthetic antibiotics. Keywords: alternative antibiotics, combination extracts, Escherichia coli, ginger, in vitro, propolis

Abstract

This study was aims to exploit the potential waste of cocoa pod (Theobroma cacao L.) as a natural acaricide in ticks (Boophilus microplus). The study was conducted with a two-variable completely randomized design (CRD) with two repetitions. The sample does not differentiate between sex, body weight, and length of about 0.8 - 1 cm. Each 5 ticks were treated as follows: treat 1 extract of 10% cocoa pod husk; treatment 2 20% cocoa pod skin extract; treatment 3 30% cocoa pod husk extract; treatment 4 negative control; treat 5 positive controls. In the first variable the tick was treated with methanol extract, while in the second variable the ethanol extract was treated with 10%, 20%, 30% respectively, negative control and positive control. In treatment I used 25 ticks plus treatment II 25 ticks. Each treatment was repeated to avoid data bias so that a total of 100 ticks were used. The results showed that the cocoa pod husk extract had the best killing power at a concentration of 30% with methanol solvent at 6.21 hours while ethanol solvent at 5.91 hours. The use of extraction materials has not been able to compensate for the use of synthetic materials that can kill in minutes.
