This research aimed to know the increasing of student’s mathematical communication skill and self-concept which was taught by problem based learning as compared to the conventional learning. The design of this research was pretest posttest control group design. The population was all students of grade 8thof regular class of SMPN 4 Bandarlampung in academic year of 2013/2014 that were distributed into eight classes. The samples were students of VIIIE and VIIIG class who were taken by purposive sampling technique. The research data were obtained by test of mathematical communication skill and self-concept scale. The conclusion of this research was the problem based learning could increase the student’s mathematical communication skill, but not increase the student’s self-concept.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui peningkatan kemampuan komunikasi matematis dan self-concept siswa yang mengikuti PBM dibandingkan dengan siswa yang mengikuti pembelajaran konvensional. Desain dalam penelitian ini adalah pretest posttest control group design. Populasi adalah seluruh siswa kelas VIII reguler SMPN 4 Bandar Lampung Tahun Pelajaran 2013/2014 yang terdistribusi dalam delapan kelas. Sampel penelitian adalah siswa kelas VIIIE dan VIIIG yang diambil dengan teknik purposive sampling. Data penelitian diperoleh melalui tes kemampuan komunikasi matematis dan skala self-concept. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah PBM dapat meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi matematis siswa, namun tidak dapat meningkatkan self-concept siswa.Kata kunci: kemampuan komunikasi matematis, pembelajaran berbasis masalah, self-concept
