Abstract

This research aimed to determine the stocking density that support the best growth and survival rate of carp cultivated in aquaponic systems, and to study the water quality of carp culture with different stocking densities in aquaponic systems. The study used 12 aquaria measuring 40x40x40 cm each (water volume of 50 liters). The experimental fish are carp (Cyprinus carpio) weighing in average of 3.5 g/individual.  The fish were cultivated with different stocking densities as treatment, including A = 4; B = 7; C = 10 and D = 13 individuals/aquarium.  The fish were fed with pellet at 5%/body weight/day with a feeding frequency of two times a day. The study was conducted for 4 weeks. Data consisting of daily growth, survival and water quality parameters (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate) were measured once a week. The data obtained were analyzed by ANOVA. The results of the study showed that the difference in stocking density had no significant effect on the growth and survival of carp.  Water quality was in a reasonable range to support the growth and survival of carp cultivated with aquaponic systems. Keywords: cultivation, carp, aquaponics, stocking density, growth

Abstract

An underwater visual census (UVC) conducted to assess the biophysical conditions of the two marine protected areas (Antulang Marine Protected Area and Andulay Marine Protected Area) in Siaton, Negros Oriental revealed slow recovery from severe damage resulting from Typhoon Sendong in December 2011, suggestive of “coral-algal phase-shift”. Live hard coral (LHC) cover was consistently poor in the survey sites (2.25±0.78 % in Antulang Marine Protected Area; 1.25±0.50 % in the Control Site; and 3.33±0.17 % in Andulay Marine Protected Area) following destruction by the typhoon and colonization of algae (between 37-53%), dominated by Bornetella oligospora. Mean total fish biomass (including fusiliers and schooling juvenile Caranx sexfasciatus) was highest in Antulang Marine Protected Area at 70.60±28.07 kg/500m2 (equivalent to 141.21±56.14 tonne/km2) while lowest in Andulay Marine Protected Area at 9.83±4.32 kg/500m2. Mean total fish density was highest in Antulang Marine Protected Area at 597.0±114.7 fish/500m2 followed by the Control Site with 361.7±159.0 fish/500 m2, while Andulay Marine Protected Area had 200.7±31.6 fish/500m2. Fish species composition was slightly altered, i.e. decline in coral-dependent species such as damselfishes. Keywords: coral reef, macroalgae, phase-shift, resilience, recovery, typhoon

Abstract

Production of global and national aquaculture often fails due to outbreaks of fish diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. Moreover, as a tropical country, Indonesia has a climate that strongly supports the development of pathogens. The occurrence of disease outbreak is basically as a result of disturbance of the balance interaction between fish, the unfavorable environment and pathogens. Medicinal plants are rich of antimicrobial compounds such as naphthoquinone, coumarin derivatives, tannins, flavonoids, and steroids, which are effective for inhibiting the growth of bacteria and fungi. Oleoresin compounds, i.e. essential oils that act as antibacterial and antifungal are also present in medicinal plants. Medicinal plants also serve to stop the bleeding, because there are anti-inflammatory compounds (anti-inflammatory). This compound is found in several medicinal plants that have been tested to cope with fish diseases such as rose balsam, guava leaf, garlic, betel leaf and ginger. Some of the advantages of using traditional medicinal plants are relatively safe, easy to obtain, cheap, not resistant, and relatively harmless to the surrounding environment and do not create antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Thus, it is more adviseable to use medicinal plants in controlling fish diseases. Keywords: medicinal plants, aquaculture, aquaculture, fish diseases

Abstract

Abstract This study evaluated the effects of feeding protocol of nucleotide-supplemented diet on total hemocytes, PO activity and growth of whiteleg shrimp.  Shrimp juveniles were reared in five 120-l glass aquaria at the density of 25 juveniles each.  Shrimp pellet was supplemented with nucleotides mixture at 400 mg.kg-1 diet. Shrimps were fed three time a day at 3%/bw/d.  Feeding protocol was 7 days nucleotides diet – 7 days basal diet alterably for 49 days.  Total hemocyte count, PO activity, and growth were measured at the end of experiment.  Research result showed that oral administration of nucleotides at seven days interval did not affect THC, PO activity, and growth of shrimp. But if the feed was administered successively for four weeks, supplementation of nucleotides would significantly enhance the nonspecific immune response and shrimp growth.   Keywords: Litopenaeus vannamei, nucleotides, PO activity, total hemocyte count
