Abstract

ABSTRACT Due to limited time in the language classroom, teachers cannot set a huge number of goals for their students in teaching-learning process. The 4/3/2 activity, which is becoming increasingly popular among ESL teachers, is the focus of this research. The corrective feedback strategy is offered in this study as a way to improve the 4/3/2 activity. There were four participants in the study, all of whom were English Language Training for Officials (ELTO) spell-out students from Southeast Asian countries. They underwent a short course at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. The findings suggest that fluency development is best served by 4/3/2 activity. Especially, respondents' fluency in both activities improved as a result of the time constraints. Surprisingly , there is not enough evidence to support the claim that both activities are more valuable in terms of accuracy's improvement. Despite the fact that corrective feedback has been incorporated into the activity, the results show no significant change. While adjusting the 4/3/2 activity can help, it does not take the place of adjusting the activity's priority. Correct feedback does not interfere with fluency improvement, hence this claim is disproved.

Abstract

This study is comparative literature that focuses on the differences and similarities of two literary works, namely John Steinbeck’s The Pearl and a movie production directed by Turino Djunaedy entitled Intan Berduri. The study analyzed the similarities and differences in these two different works by using American School theory. This research used a qualitative method which was based on library research. The results of this study can be formulated as follows: 1) Both have similarities in the characterization in which the main characters are poor families and they hope they can have a better life after they find the pearl, and both of them fail to get the great future. (2) Both have differences in the way the main characters find the pearl and how the story ends. The characters in The Pearl cannot move from the lower class into the upper one, but the characters in Intan Berduri have the experience to be the upper class although just for a temporary moment and then go back to their previous class.

Abstract

Being a mother is the most exclusive experience that only women experience. For centuries, women were forced to accept the dogma that motherhood is a wonderful experience. Silvia Plath, one of the female poets who dared to express her original experience of being a mother without having to follow the language of patriarchal literature. The Gynocritic approach is applied because it places the female voice as the single most original voice for the experience of motherhood without patriarchal interference. Several selected poems at the end of life from Silvia Plath were used as a source of research data. Research findings show that Plath had considerable difficulty in adapting to being a mother. Whatever experience Plath has, or any mother, is an exclusive wealth that should only be owned and shared by women.
