Abstract

Western thoughts have discredited Islamic teaching. Orientalism never gives up in spreading issues in relation with their objectives in distancing Muslim from Islam. The idea of orientalism becomes a point of discussion that appears as opposition of Islam in many ways. Unfortunately, this kind of situation has not been realized by most Muslim in Indonesia that is contemporarily bothered by their debated teaching of Islam which comes from orientalist ideas in order to disintegrate Islam. For instance, is the orientalism in Indonesia. The history of orientalism in Indonesia becomes unforgettable part of Indonesia colonialism. It was known that the orientalist activities have supplied many objectives for the colonialism, especially in Aceh Darussalam. Hurgronje analyzed and observed that the struggle from the Acehness will be suppressed by the politics of split within the local leader between Ulama (religious leader) and Uleebalang (formal leader). This paper aims to explore the activities of Christian Snouck Hurgronje in relation with his effort in helping colonial to disintegrate Indonesia people. His mission is to crack the principal sources of Islam: Qur’an and Hadith by pretending to be a Muslim and went to Mecca for learning Islam. But his affiliation to Islam is only a mask to cover his actual purposes as a missionary.

Abstract

The project of ‘Âbid Al-Jâbirî’s thoughts has become epistemological critic to traditional frame of Islam-Arab knowledge through analyzing socio-political background on the logic of Arab formulation. According to Al-Jâbirî, the logic of Arabic thought could be devised into three methods: bayâni, ‘irfâni and burhâni. Therefore, the structure of Islam-Arab culture has occurred based on: (1) authoritative texts—because the logic of Arab is exceedingly based on religious texts, (2) authoritative salaf, that is, focused on ‘ulama’s considerations, and (3) authoritative permissivism along with anti-causality (sult}ah at-tajwîz al-lâsababiyyah). Hence, Arabic culture becomes unproductive, poor of concept and theory. As a solution, Al-Jâbirî invites to contextualize the spirit of critic such as rational-empiricism of Ibn H{azm and al-Shât}ibî on fiqh, Ibn Rushd on philosophy, Ibn Khaldûn on sociology, etc. This article will probe specifically about ‘Âbid Al-Jâbirî’s reform thought. Al-Jâbirî’s thinking distinctiveness lies in the epistemological critique conducted on the science that develops in the Arab-Islamic civilization. The epistemological critique becomes a realm of science that not much attention, especially by Muslim thinkers. Al-Jâbirî’s epistemological critique offers to the Muslim world an attempt to reconstruct the building of reason-epistemic knowledge to keep pace and change its Islamic world towards the progress of civilization.

Abstract

This article attempts to scrutinize the relation between Orthodox Muslim and the followers of Kaweruh Kamanungsan in Sedoyo, Banyuwangi, East Java. These two religious groups that have two different and opposite ideological perspectives, apparently, have influenced cultural and structural agencies in the village. Having utilized Althusser’s Ideological State Apparatus, the elites of these groups are competing each other to introduce their own ideologies into social institutions like religion, education, family, and legal instruments. As a result, village structures are divided into Muslim and Kaweruh Kamanungsan groups. Evidently, Muslim groups who have vertical link into government and horizontal one into society succeeded to eliminate “deviant” local tradition groups. However, Kaweruh Kamanungsan, as one of local tradition in this village, has survived from the proselytizing program and has successfully built a bridge to eliminate the gap between religious and cultural differences in society.

Abstract

The history of Jewish Nusantara in Indonesia is unclear whether Jewish came to Indonesia or otherwise. The fact that in Indonesia regulation, Judaism is not part of religions officially recognized by the state, add more suspicions that Judaism is not well accepted in Indonesia. In addition, Indonesia people, objectively, factually and historically speaking, have no much information about Judaism either in terms of religion, social, cultural and politics. In terms of academic studies, Historical and scientific record are not yet capable to explore much information about them. On one hand, the history of Judaism in Indonesia (Yahudi Nusantara) is academically and culturally limited. On the other hand, public discussion and debate relating to this topic—which tend to describe Jews historically and stereotypically—are rising and growing. This article aims to narrow the gap between both of two mentioned realities to explore historical existence of Jews in Indonesia. It will elucidate specific moments when Jews reality has been transforming and challenging in the context of Indonesian culture. Using this paradigm, the article perceives Jews as a dynamic and moving survival, like other realities. Therefore, this article intends to build good understanding of Judaism, in general, and Indonesian Jews in particular.

Abstract

The conflict between Sunni and Shia groups in Sampang did not take place at once but rather through certain periods of time when each conflict had triggered another conflict. In each period, either the government and religious elite has a pivotal role to evaluate, charge or discharge, civic engagement and elite integration in the conflict process. This article is aimed to analyze the violence against Shia group in three periods of time: pre-conflict, midi-conflict, and post-conflict. The first period started after Kiai Makmun had passed away. The second was when the violence occurred in December 29th 2011 and August 26th 2012. And the third occurred after the violence had taken place. Although the conflict has run for several years, it has not shown the end. In order to explain this problem, this article bases on two hypotheses: first, the conflict has been caused by the absence of civic engagement. And second, which was caused the conflict continuation, has been caused by elite integration, which has never occurred on the society. This article concludes two things: first, civic engagement that can find only intra-communal engagement (intra-community engagement). And second, elite integration cannot be created because Shia’s Kiai had not been legitimized by Sunni’s Kiai.

Abstract

Abstract

Pesantren memiliki ciri khas kepemimpinan otoritarianisme.

Abstract

Religious experience of multicultural society in Indonesia has frequently been characterized by conflict and violence in various regions. As a state having the motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, Indonesia has several challenges and problems of plurality, ethnicity, religion, and culture. However, each culture has it own local wisdom to overcome these challenges and problems. This article finds that the presence of religious life (Hindu-Muslim) in Denpasar Bali does not look like other regions in Indonesia, which is always covered by conflict and violence in the name of religion. Multicultural society in Denpasar Bali indicates ideal collaboration between Muslims and Hindus to build religious activities. It is an integral part of Balinese life and the Balinese friendly character to sprout back to Bali Glow (Bali Aga). It sure takes a long time to proceed through the dialectical theology, ideology, and socio-cultural processes. Together with social institutions, the local government had tried to maintain and protect the essence of Hindu Balinese culture, by preserving the tradition of Menyama Braya for the realization of harmonious religiosity.
