Abstract

This research aims to describe the process and analyze thescore result of learning the review text with quantum learning method in class VIII-3 at SMPN 20 Batam. In essence, the research aims to improve the learning process of writing a reviewtext. Furthermore, by providing a quantum learning method can improve students' test scores in writing a reviewtext. This research is a classroom action research that use descriptive method. The research data is described qualitatively by observation checklist, field notes, questionnaires, and interviews. Data of learning outcome obtained from tests of writing reviewtext. This research was conducted in two cycles through four procedures: (1) planning, (2) actions, (3) observation, and (4) reflection. Based on the analysis of research finding, it can be summarized as follows;First, the learningprocess of writing the review text by using quantum learning method in class VIII-3 SMPN 20 Batam performed well in Cycle II. Second, the application of quantum learning method in writing a reviewtext in class VIII-3 SMPN20 Batam can improve the scoreof learning outcomes in writing reviewtext. The improvement was seen from the average count at each cycle, for example pra-cycles 58.72, 70.69 Cycle I and Cycle II 83.25.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out whether or not there was a significant correlation between noun phrase and writing descriptive text. This study was using quantitative approach. The technique for collecting data was noun phrase test and written test. This study was conducted at SMA N 5 OKU. The population of this study was the tenth grade students of SMA N 5 OKU in academic year 2018/2019 and the samples were 122 students which were choosen randomly from the population. The data were collected by using noun phrase test and written test. The data were analyzed by using the correlational analyses and computerized by using SPSS 23. After conducting the research, the researcher got the data which showed that there was significant correlation between noun phrase and writing descriptive text. The correlation was significant in terms of the correlation coefficient was 0.424. It meant that research hypothesis (Ha) alternative hypothesis was accepted and (Ho) null hypothesis was rejected.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the students’ hands shake and voice trambles in conducting presentation. The method used is qualitative describtive method. In data collection, researcher applied the closed quesionnaire through fifty students in three classes and to analyse the data by comparing and categorisation according to each its parts. And result displays in the form of text, table and chart. The result of this present research were found by the fifty students which were involved in the presentation. The first result were 33 students who got hands shake an there were 17 students who did not got hands shake in conducting presentation. the second, there were 34 students who got voice trembles and 16 students who did not got voice trembles in doing the class presentation. The most dominant faced by students in doing presentation is the voice trembles and the more dominant is the hands shake as found 16 students.

Abstract

The emergence of the 4.0 era requires the world of education to adapt to technology. Practicing and learning English can take the advantage of the sophisticated technology, especially applications that can be downloaded from students' smart phone. Students acknowledge that English learning done in the classroom is easy for them to forget because it is rarely used in everyday life. Practices done in the classroom do not have enough time for all students to speak English, and students are less motivation to speak English outside the classroom. Integrating Instagram into the process of teaching English speaking is believed could motivate students to speak and increase their speaking ability. Various features on Instagram can help students in doing assignments. Tasks may be packaged attractively within the variety of videos based on a certain theme and uploaded to Instagram. This study aimed to determine students' perceptions related to the use of social media Instagram in learning English speaking. This descriptive study used forty-four students Communication Science in academic year 2019/2020 who took Bahasa Inggris Keahlian. To determine students' perceptions, researchers used questionnaire adopted from Dornyei, 2011. The results of the study showed a positive or good response on students' perceptions towards the use of Instagram in learning English Speaking. Furthermore, Instagram can be used as another medium in teaching speaking. This is strengthened by the increase in self-confidence, learning motivation, and student interest in speaking in English.

Abstract

Setiap manusia mempunyai kepribadian masing-masing. Kepribadian inilah yang membuat setiap manusia merupakan mahluk Tuhan yang unik atau tidak ada yang benar-benar sama. Untuk menganalisa kepribadian seseorang banyak sekali pendekatan psikologi yang bisa diterapkan. Salah satu dari tehnik analisa kepribadian tersebut adalah teori kepribadian yang ditemukan oleh bapak psikologi dunia yaitu Sigmund Freud. Beliau menemukan unsur-unsur dari kepribadian yaitu Id, ego dan super ego. Id adalah unsur kepribadian yang didapat semenjak lahir. Unsur kepribadian ini adalah unsur kepribadian dibawah alam sadar termasuk naluriah dan isting. Menurut Freud, id adalah sumber dari semua energy phisic dan id bekerja berdasarkan prinsip kesenangan atau kenyamanan. Jika kebutuhan id ini tidak dipenuhi maka membuat badan kita tidak merasa tidak nyaman, tegang atau cemas. Unsur kepribadian selanjutnya adalah ego. Ego adalah unsur kepribadian manusia yang kedua yang bekerja berdasarkan prinsip kenyataan. Ego bertugas untuk memenuhi kebutuhan id berdasarkan unsur kenyataan yang ada. Sedangkan superego adalah norma sosial ataupun keagamaan yang dilakukan oleh ego untuk memenuhi kebutuhan dari idnya

Abstract

This studies, discusses the application of the modern anthropolinguistics (competence, performance, indexicality, and participation) in Umpasa of Batak Toba culture. The linguistic anthropology examines the structure and relationships through kinship term, the concept of color, parenting, or examine how community members communicate with each other in certain situations such us the costum ceremonies, then connects it with the culture’s concept. Umpasa contains the poetic value, contains philosophy of life that is ‘Hagabeon’ (happiness), ‘Hamoraon’ (wealth), ‘Hasangapon’ (respected), and ‘Saur Matua’ (longevity and prosperity). The writer applies the anthropolinguistics modern theory to know how is the knowledge of a language that is controlled by a speaker of a language and the use of language that is evident in the actual communication as a reflection of the mind of speaker regarding the sign that have a relationship existential with the referenced and the involvement of the speaker to produce the form of acceptable speech in in ‘umpasa’ of Batak Toba culture.

Abstract

This research demonstrates the relationship of fantasy fiction, archetypes, romanticism and nationalism in one of fantasy fiction, namely Tolkien’s The Silmarillion. Since fantasy fiction, with the stereotype of escapism, is less appreciated this article is written in attempt to give more appreciation to fantasy fiction. Analysis to show the relationship of fantasy fiction, archetype, romanticism and nationalism is carried out by applying archetypal approach and Frye’s concept of mythos. This analysis is aimed at determining the position of the story in Frye’s mythos taxonomy and its values. The values, then, are compared with values found in English nationalistic discourse. The result of this analysis indicates that the story of The Silmarillion can be classified as tragic mythos. However, tragedy in the Silmarillion is elaborated differently from the characteristics of the mythos suggested by Frye. Tragedy of The Silmarillion is collective in its nature. The uniqueness of tragedy in The Silmarillion, then, is read as representation of fellowship spirit value in English nationalistic discourse. The Silmarillion also shows wisdom and historical continuity values parallel with values found English nationalistic discourse. From these values The Silmarillion shows that pastoral life with its collectivity, wisdom and tranquility as an ideal life for English people. Further, the revealed values also shows that in establishing England national identity, Tolkien, like his national identity builders predecessor, refers to old wisdoms. He refers to values that are perceived as part of values in previous past gloriuos era. By doing so it can be concluded that in establishing the national identity Tolkien uses the same method with his predecessor; refering back to the previous golden era—a kind of romanticism.

Abstract

Media ada di mana-mana; media sudah menjadi bagian dari kehidupan sehari-hari kita. Pada saat ini Orang-orang lebih mudah mendapatkan informasi dan pencerahan berkat layanan media. Walaupun ada Keluhan tentang efek negatifnya telah didengar dan bahkan mereka yang mengkritik media untuk dampak negatifnya tidak dapat mengabaikan fakta bahwa media dapat digunakan sebagai alat yang efektif untuk mendidik, menginformasikan dan menghibur. Untuk berbagai alasan, Audio visual Media, terutama video pasti diakui sebagai salah satu alat paling efektif dalam pendidikan. Tujuan Untuk mengetahui pengaruh keterampilan berbicara siswa kelas VIII di SMPN 21 kota Batam, SMPN 11 kota Batam, dan SMPN 35 kota Batam dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sebelum menggunakan metode Media Audio Visual. Dan Untuk mengetahui pengaruh keterampilan berbicara siswa kelas VIII di SMPN 21 kota Batam, SMPN 11 kota Batam, dan SMPN 35 kota Batam dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sesudah menggunakan metode Media Audio Visual. Dari hasil penelitian dan pembahasan yang dilakukan penulis, maka dapat ditarik kesimpulan sebagai berikut : Setelah dilakukan pengembangan dengan diketahui bahwa siswa SMPN 21 kota Batam, SMPN 11 kota Batam, dan SMPN 35 kota Batam lebih mudah untuk memahami materi atau informasi yang disampaikan oleh guru, apabila dibandingkan dengan penggunaan sebelumnya. Artinya tujuan pembelajaran dapat tercapai secara lebih efektif untuk materi bahasa inggris pada siswa SMPN 21 kota Batam, SMPN 11 kota Batam, dan SMPN 35 kota Batam Setelah adanya pengembangan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk siswa SMPN 21 kota Batam, SMPN 11 kota Batam, dan SMPN 35 kota Batam terbukti lebih efektif apabila dibandingkan sebelum adanya pengembangan

Abstract

Naming is a specific linguistic act, intimately linked with values, traditions, hopes, fears and events in people’s lives. Names reveal the many preferences of their owners (or givers) in terms of real life objects, actions, features and beliefs. Place names provide the most useful geographical reference system in the world. The topic of names is a multidisciplinary field that has occupied the attention of philosophers of language, anthropologists, linguists and ordinary people. In this study, I try to analyze the names of meeting rooms in the East Java Governmental Building. The reason to choose this object is because the East Java Governmental Building is the center of government/ administration in East Java. This study aims to find out the kinds of names applied in the naming of meeting rooms in the East Java Governmental Building and the presuppose reasons behind the name chosen of the East Java Governmental Building. This study is a qualitative study. Based on the classification of the data, they were classified to two groups: the names of governors in East Java and the names of the kings or military chief of great kingdoms in East Java. The meeting rooms in the governmental building of East Java are named after important people in the history of the province. To conclude, the administration named all the meeting rooms, as the most important rooms in the building to welcome guests, using the name of people who have big influence and involvement in the history of East Java so that it has roots to its history.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the cultural approach to language learning is taught in English. A foreign language teacher has a responsibility to implement most of approaches above mention in order to socialize the language learners into what members of the target language society consider being linguistically and socio culturally appropriate behavior. Consequently, a successful language learner must be adapted in the culture (acculturation) of the target language.
