Abstract

This article is to explain the implementation of KTSP curriculum which is invented in 2006 and is still implemented in some schools in Indonesia. Here, the writer includes several aspects, which are the current status of the curriculum, the relationship of curriculum with the mainstream environment, the organizing principle of the curriculum, theoretical approach of the curriculum, the theory of language learning, the curriculum and its context, curriculum and syllabus assessment. The method applied here is a library analysis toward KTSP curriculum. The result shows that the curriculum suits Indonesian students in almost sides since it requires teachers to develop the curriculum based on the context of schools and students’ capacity. Besides, the students will not face huge burden learning in a school since the teachers who formally recognize their students well develop all the teaching and learning syllabi. In conclusion, KTSP is a practically appropriate curriculum which has been implemented compared to previous curriculums. Indonesian government design it since this is a better innovative curriculum to apply to the educational institutions in Indonesia. The demand of the curriculum appears neither low nor high and is definitely achieved by the students.  Key Words: Analyzing, Curriculum, KTSP

Abstract

Motivation is a key concept to be success in learning. Student who has high motivation would do the best in learning even though the materials were felt difficult. On the contrary, student who has low motivation would get bored and be indifferent in learning even though the materials given were so easy. In line with this, this study tried to investigate students’ motivation in learning English, whether they had intrinsic or extrinsic motivation. The study was conducted at English Department of Islamic State University (UIN) Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh. The sample of this study was 142 English students from first, third, fifth and seventh semesters. This study was a survey method and the technique sampling used in this study was random sampling. Furthermore, the instrument used to collect the data is questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of 10 questions in which question 1-5 are questions for intrinsic motivation and question 6-7 are questions for extrinsic motivation. The result of this study shows that the total mean score of intrinsic motivation is higher than the total mean score of extrinsic motivation 4.08 ˃ 3.21. It means that English students at UIN Ar-Raniry had higher intrinsic motivation than extrinsic motivation in learning English. In other words, the motivation to learn English that comes from inside students was bigger than the motivation comes from outside students.Keywords: Motivation, English Students

Abstract

This research is about the use of Number Head Together (NHT) in Teaching Speaking for Junior High School. The research problem for the study are (1) How is the use of Number Heads Together in Teaching at Junior High School, (2) What are the teacher obstacles during the use of Number Heads Together (NHT) in teaching speaking for Junior High School. The objective of the study are: (1) to figure out the use of Number Heads Together (NHT) in teaching speaking for Junior High School, (2) To find out the teacher obstacles during the use of Number Heads Together (NHT) in Teaching Speaing for Junior High School. In order to get the data, the resercher used observation sheet and Interview Guide. This research took place in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Banda Aceh. Through the research, it was found that; (1) the use of Number Heads Together (NHT) in teaching speaking follow the steps they are, greeting, reviewing, explaining, numbering, questioning, discussing, answering. (2). There are some obstacles that the teacher faced during the use of Number Heads Together (NHT) they are: the difficulties in making the group which consist of various proficiency and the lack of students trust to the member of the groups answers. Key Words: NHT, Speaking

Abstract

This article discussed that the students’ difficulties in writing can be triggered by a lot of factors, but to solve those difficulties is never ending story. While correction of piece of writing is believed can helped students improve their writing, but the fact that the implementation of correction still cannot solve the problem. Moreover, students tend to be apprehensive. Writing apprehensive is dealing with the anxiety about writing. Students feel fear when they are assigned to write a piece of writing. This nevertheless, is a problematical issue that needs to be solved by the writing instructor or teacher. Some experts stated that writing apprehension can be caused by several factors, such as lack of writing strategies, inappropriate teachers’ writing teaching techniques, inappropriate contain of writing textbooks, and the students’ cognitive.  Therefore, a better teaching instruction perhaps will minimize students’ apprehension in writing. Abstract

Penelitian ini difokuskan pada upaya untuk Meningkatkan kemampuan menulis teks naratif Bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan video klip. Tujuannya adalah untuk mengetahui apakah penggunaan video klip dapat meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menulis teks naratif Bahasa Inggris, untuk mengetahui sejauh mana efektifitas dari penggunaan video klip untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menulis teks naratif, serta untuk mengetahui pendapat mahasiswa tentang menulis teks naratif dan faktor apa saja yang menyebabkan mereka sulit menghasilkan ide untuk menulis teks tersebut. Data yang diperoleh dalam penelitian ini melalui 2 (dua) tehnik; tes dan questionnaire. Tes digunakan untuk mengukur kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menulis teks naratif dengan menngunakan video klip. Sementara questionnaire didistribusikan untuk mengetahui sejauh mana efektifitas penggunaan video klip dalam membantu mahasiswa meningkatkan kemampuan menulis teks naratif serta untuk mengetahui kesulitan – kesulitan yang dihadapi mahasiswa xdalam menghasilkan teks naratif, yang dapat diketahui melalui tanggapan atau jawaban dari mahasiswa tersebut. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di Jurusan Bahasa Inggris STKIP Bina Bangsa Getsempena Banda Aceh. Populasi penelitian adalah seluruh mahasiswa pada program studi (Prodi) Bahasa Inggris, sementara sampel yang digunakan untuk penelitian adalah mahasiswa Prodi Bahasa Inggris semester III angkatan tahun 2012, sebanyak 17 orang. Hasil penelitian menunjukkn bahwa nilai rata-rata pre-tes memiliki perbedaan yang besar dengan nilai rata-rata post-tes, dimana 56,2 untuk pre-tes dan 75,5 untuk post-tes. Hal ini membuktikan bahwa penggunaan media video klip dapat meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menulis teks naratif Bahasa Inggris. Kata kunci: Video klip, Menulis, Text naratif

Abstract

AbstractListening is a basic ability required in mastering English. The purpose of this article is to describe the utilization of audio visual media in improving listening skills of students majoring in STKIP Language BBG Banda Aceh. The main purpose of this research is 1) to know the application of learning development of audio-visual media in improving listening ability of first year English students of  STKIP BBBG. 2) to know the increasing of listening ability of English student of second year students of STKIP BBBG after getting learning using audio visual media. This research is quantitative study. To achieve these objectives, purposive sampling is used which is focused on the first year student students semester II are taken as the subject of this research. Regarding the data analysis, mean, percentage and t-test scores for the dependent sample were employed. The result indicated that 1) the students’ English listening comprehension ability increased significantly after learning with videos and 2) students had positive attitudes towards using videos in teaching listening skills. Keywords: Audio Visual Media, Listening

Abstract

This study was investigated the process of language teaching and learning of speaking  in terms of  teaching materials, teaching methods and learning assessments to the students’ at MTsN Blangpidie in the Academic years of  2016/2017. This study  was a descriptive  research. Two English teachers who taught at MTsN Blangpidie were participated in this study. An Interview was used to collect the data. The data were recorded, transcribed and coded based on the the problems. The finding of the study showed  that the teachers at MTsN Blangpidie of  South West Aceh used various teaching materials, teaching strategies and also learning assessments. Keywords: Speaking, Teaching Materials, Teaching Methods and Learning Assessments

Abstract

Constructing a sentence grammatically and syntactically correct has become a cliché but crucial problem for English as Second Language (ESL) learners. The problem is also faced by ESL teachers, significantly in correcting the students’ papers and finding the solutions for this problem. The pattern of the sentences then should be analyzed in order to find a predominant pattern normally constructed by the learners. This article tries to look and explore that point by analyzing the syntactic and grammar aspects of the sentences written by ESL Learners. Two samples of ESL learners’ writing paper are used as documents to be analyzed. The samples are taken from two different level of English proficiency called S2 and S4.  The analysis is divided into two parts. Part one is the quantitative analysis which reveals the calculation of the analysis on several points such as, types of clause, sub clauses, tenses, aspects, verbs, objects, references, and antecedent of S2 and S4 writing text and it illustrates how many of each component appears in both learners’ texts. Those findings are presented in tables and they are attached in appendices. Moreover, part two, qualitatively the result of quantitative method is explained more than only numbers, by giving more details on the pattern of the sentences written by two learners and also to draw a prediction made before. Thus, it is found that the learners have problems in constructing complete sentences, such as lack of subject and verb and subject-verb agreement errors. S2 learner tends to use more personal pronouns comparing to S4 learners, it is assumed because of his lack of syntax repertoire in constructing more complex and compound sentences. The progress of syntactic system of S2 is showed by correctly used of tense, reference, and proper subject. S4 writing text is categorized as a well developed of syntactic system. The confident use of different sentence structure, vary of vocabulary and has a good persuasive sentences reflect on his writing. The sentences written by S2 and S4 learner predominantly have SVO (Np +(aux)+ Vp) pattern and mix with the compound and complex sentences, where clause sometimes can be objects and complement. For instance, I am a duck who traveled in the sea (S (Np+Vp)+S-bar) and I’m not a callous person but I’m in favour that he should have been left to die on Mount Everest for these following reasons (s(Np+Vp)CC+s(Np+Vp). This study’s findings would benefit the writer, especially for teachers, they should consider the learners’ level, and what kind of instruction should be good to apply in order to maximize learners’ comprehension. Key Words: sentence, syntax, ESL learner

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas strategi penerjemahan dan dampak strategi terhadap teks terjemahan yang dilakukan oleh sejumlah pelamar gelar Master di Sekolah Pascasarjana UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh. Data yang dikumpulkan adalah sepuluh produk terjemahan, dari bahasa Inggris sampai bahasa Indonesia, dari pelamar. Teks bahasa Inggris yang diterjemahkan terdiri dari 390 kata. Mereka diizinkan menggunakan kamus tradisional atau kamus offline / elektronik saat menerjemahkan teks. Penelitian menggunakan teori strategi penerjemahan yang diusulkan oleh Jääskeläinen (1993), strategi global dan lokal, dan oleh Vinay & Dalbernet (1958 & 2000), metode terjemahan (terjemahan harfiah dan oblique) dan prosedur terjemahan (peminjaman, penerjemah kalque, terjemahan harfiah, modulasi , transposisi, kesetaraan, dan adaptasi). Temuan menunjukkan bahwa calon mahasiswa cenderung menggunakan strategi lokal dan metode literal dalam terjemahannya. Hal ini mempengaruhi kualitas terjemahan, membuatnya kurang alami dalam bahasa target. Selain itu, ada kesalahan terjemahan karena pilihan kata yang salah / salah, menyebabkan pesan dalam teks sumber gagal disampaikan. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan masukan yang berharga untuk studi dan kursus terjemahan di masa depan. Kata Kunci: Strategi Penerjemahan, Metode Penerjemahan, Prosedur Penerjemahan AbstractThis study discusses the translation strategy and the impact of the strategy to the translated texts done by a number of Master’s degree applicants of UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh Graduate School. Data collected were ten translation products, from English to Indonesian, of the applicants. The English text translated consisted of 390 words. The applicants were allowed to use traditional dictionary or offline/electronic dictionary when translating the text. The study employed the translation strategy theories proposed by Jääskeläinen (1993), global and local strategies, and by Vinay & Dalbernet (1958 & 2000), translation methods (literal and oblique translation) and translation procedures (borrowing, calque, literal translation, modulation, transposition, equivalence, and adaptation). Findings showed that the applicants tended to use the local strategy and literal method in their translation. This affected the quality of the translation, making it less natural in the target language. In addition, there was mistranslation due to inaccurate/wrong word choices, causing the messages within the source text to fail to be conveyed. Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the students errors in distinguishing between collective and plural noun and the factors made the students errors in distinguishing between collective noun and plural noun. In collecting required data, the researcher used interview and test. The subject of this research was the students at class VII2 SMPN 1 Nisam which consisted of 29 students. The result of this research shown that the students errors were divided into three categories, namely, errors of omission, errors of addition and errors of misuse. Based on the result of test, it was found out that there were 10,7% of students made errors of omission, 67,4% errors of misuse and 21,9 % errors of addition. The result of interview shown that students made many errors caused by two factors; they are external and internal factor. External factor come from the method of teaching, because how well the students understand the material depends on the method of teaching that used by the teacher. Internal factor was the students themselves, they did not pay attention to their study, some of them were afraid and shy to ask the teacher if they do not understand the material. Some of them were did not do repetition of their lesson or lazy to study. Keywords: Error, Collective and Plural Noun
