Abstract

AbstractThis study is to implement English songs in teaching speaking for English Department students at STKIP Bina Bangsa Getsempena Banda Aceh. This research was quasi-experimental study. The aim of the study was to find out students improvement in speaking ability by using English songs. The population of this study was the whole students of English Department of STKIP Bina Bangsa Getsempena Banda Aceh in academic year 2015/2016. The sample is the second-semester students of English Department that consisted of 35 students. The data needed are recorded by testing students speaking test. The data were analyzed by using t-test. The result of the study is shown that the t-score was 7,25 the critical value of the t-score for the degree of freedom is 34 at the level of significance 0,05. The result showed that the calculation of the score is 7,25, it is higher than t-table 2,14, thus the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted which means that the use of English songs can improve students’ speaking ability. Keywords:  English Songs, Speaking Ability

Abstract

This research is about the use of Number Head Together (NHT) in Teaching Speaking for Junior High School. The research problem for the study are (1) How is the use of Number Heads Together in Teaching at Junior High School, (2) What are the teacher obstacles during the use of Number Heads Together (NHT) in teaching speaking for Junior High School. The objective of the study are: (1) to figure out the use of Number Heads Together (NHT) in teaching speaking for Junior High School, (2) To find out the teacher obstacles during the use of Number Heads Together (NHT) in Teaching Speaing for Junior High School. In order to get the data, the resercher used observation sheet and Interview Guide. This research took place in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Banda Aceh. Through the research, it was found that; (1) the use of Number Heads Together (NHT) in teaching speaking follow the steps they are, greeting, reviewing, explaining, numbering, questioning, discussing, answering. (2). There are some obstacles that the teacher faced during the use of Number Heads Together (NHT) they are: the difficulties in making the group which consist of various proficiency and the lack of students trust to the member of the groups answers. Key Words: NHT, Speaking

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the students’ perceptions on the classroom debate’s learning outcome using British Parliamentary debate system. Fifteen students were randomly selected and assigned to a group and actively involved in the debate in ten sessions during a whole semester. The obtained data of this study were collected through a survey questionnaire using 5-point Likert scale and interviews five random five participants to validate the data of the questionnaire and further analyze using mix method that combines between qualitative and quantitative approaches. The result of the data showed that the students indicated a positive perspective on its learning outcomes through the implementation of British Parliamentary Debate System in term of students’ interest, subject matter, communication skill, critical and creative thinking, intrapersonal and interpersonal development skill.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to find out the teacher’s obstacles in preparing their students to win storytelling contest. This study was designed using the descriptive qualitative method. The results of the study were collected through interviewing the teacher in Methodist Senior High School who was purposely selected by their achievement in preparing the students in some storytelling contests. The conclusion of the study that the teacher’s obstacles in preparing students for storytelling those obstacles are students’ lack of vocabulary and mis-pronunciation, lack of motivation, lack of time, lack of discipline and the challenge to the diversity of students’ personality. Moreover, the solutions to those problems are also presented.

Abstract

The study is aimed to examine the effectiveness of Duolingo Gamification Platform to reduce the students' grammatical errors in writing a report text. The participant of this study were 25 students in the second grade of Methodist Senior High School in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The research utilized a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test post-test. The instrument of this study is a test divided into pre and post-test. The data were analyzed using the t-test. The study revealed that the mean score of the pre-test is 53.8, and the mean score of post-test is 55.4. The standard deviation for pre-test was 7.18 and for post-test were 7.29 and the score of the standard of error of pre-test was 1.43 and post-test was 1.45. The t-score of the study was 4.0, with the degree of freedom 24,and the t-table was 1.69. The data showed that the t-score was higher than t-table, which leads us to the interpretation that the Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected. It indicated that the use of Duolingo Gamification platform was sufficient to reduce the students' grammatical errors in writing report text. Therefore, the platform was highly recommended to use to increase the quality of students’ writing skill, especially in the report text.

Abstract

Encountering countless of inevitable problems defines the importance of problem-solving skill in students’ life. Hence, education has an obligation to help students possess all the required life-skills including but not limited to problem-solving skill. This study aims to establish a clear conclusion on how is the teacher's strategy in cultivating students’ problem-solving skill through competitive debate techniques using Asian parliamentary debate system (APDS) in the classroom setting. A qualitative approach was conducted with descriptive qualitative design. Using an online interview as the instrument with a semi-structured format, the researcher collected the data through interviewing an English teacher in Methodist senior high school Banda Aceh, Indonesia. the data collection was conducted in three phases, (1) Pre-data collection; (2) while data collection and; (3) post data collection. Where the collected data were compiled and analyzed in three stages, (1) data condensation; (2) data display, and; (3) data verification. The result showed that the teacher’s strategy was organized in three sequential order starting from pre-activity that consists of strategy in teacher preparation, while activity that pertains to the international procedures modification strategy, and post-activity regarding the teacher’s strategy in doing self-reflection toward the implementation of Asian parliamentary debate system. other relevant tips were also presented.

Abstract

This study analyses the students’ perceptions about the use of Assertion, Reason, Evidence and Link Back in teaching speaking. The population of this research was second grade students of SMAN 4 Banda Aceh which consist of 250 students and only 32 students at class XI IA 2 took as the sample of this research. The instruments of this research was questionnaire. This study was applied qualitative analysis by using percentage formula. The result of this study shows that the students’ perception performance got a positive impact after learning A.R.E.L. Thus, the students have been motivated to speak in front of class and A.R.E.L effect students’ speaking understanding in giving their argument.

Abstract

This study highlights the difficulties of teaching English at primary level in rural areas of Aceh. The participants of the research were from Pining District, Gayo Lues, Aceh, Indonesia. Data was collected from twenty primary teachers including both male and female of government schools and the interview was conducted to two teachers randomly taken from the participant of the survey. Data was analyzed on SPSS version 25. A questionnaire gave to the teachers to express their views about difficulties of teaching English at elementary level in rural areas. The teachers described their difficulties related to socio cultural difficulties, students’ lack of prior knowledge, students’ lack of motivation, schools’ lack of facilities and teacher’ lack of training on their professionalism.
