Abstract

ABSTRACT Purpose: This study aims to determine the extent of the influence of sukuk negara on financial performance, especially on profitability of sharia banking. Design/methodology/approach: This study begins with data collection from 2008 (the year in which sukuk negara is published) until 2016 by using panel regression method. Purposive sampling was used as sampling technique. Findings: By using panel regression method, it was found that sukuk negara have positive and significant influence to profitability of sharia banking. Other variables such as FDR, NPF, and BOPO have a negative and significant effect on profitability of sharia banking. CAR did not affect the profitability of sharia banking. Research limitations/implications: The sample of analysis is just 11 general sharia banks in period of 2008-2016. Further research can be completed by using more capital market instruments with the financial performance of both general conventional banking and general sharia banking. Practical implications: It can be implied that there is a positive relationship between the syariah capital market sector and the sharia banking sector. This is a signal for the government to pay more attention to the issuance of sukuk negara with competitive returns in order to improve the financial performance of sharia banking. Originality/value: Sukuk Negara as fiscal and monetary policy instruments have a very important role for the development of sharia banking. This means that the increasing interest of Islamic banking in placing funds in sukuk negara will lead to higher yields also obtained by Islamic banking. Paper type: Research paper Keyword: sukuk negara, financial performance, panel, sharia banking

Abstract

The phenomenon of slum settlements has been increasingly occurring in Indonesia. Slums are characterized by excessive population density which neglects its habitability. This program becomes one of the main agenda of Joko Widodo, the President of Indonesia, having a vision to alleviate slums, one of which is to implement the development program commonly known as National Slum Upgrading Program / KOTAKU. The program aims to create slum areas of 0% and is conducted in more than 100 districts in Indonesia. However, in its implementation, Sidoarjo regency becomes the public spotlight due to its development and achievement in economic growth improvement. This program is conducted in Sidoarjo supported by simultaneous the Regency Regulation enactment. Upon achieving success, Sidoarjo becomes a role model for other regions. Unfortunately, behind the success of development, there are two contradictory conditions, two slum villages having different development results since the development program was implemented in 2015. Bligo village becomes a successful village in establishing the development. Meanwhile, Jiken Village fails in achieving the expected development. Although the two villages share characteristics of being in adjacent location, conducting the same development program, and obtaining the same regional regulatory support, it is however not sufficient to support the success of development. This research is conducted by applying qualitative descriptive approach in order to obtain the result on the importance of participation in development process. The researchers apply the Eight Rungs of Citizen Participation, which can determine that Bligo village enters the stage of citizen control in which the community plays a full role in program implementation. Contrastingly, Jiken village only enters the stage of Informing, where the public only get information from the government related to development programs without any community empowerment. The participation of the community is crucial to the success of the development program. This is due to the existence of self-belonging exerting the ability to create sustainable development achievement.

Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between information technology investment and firm’s performance among Malaysian PLCs. Design/methodology/approach: , The analysis employed panel data approach in which it relied on annual report of companies listed in Bursa Malaysia. This study covered a period between 2009 and 2012, therefore only companies listed within this stipulated period were included in the analysis. Findings: Results of the regression estimation of the dependent variables, based on random effect model shows a high significant on return of investment score. The control variables of firm size and industry did not have a statistically significant influence on the test results. However, IT investment is statistically not significant with return on asset, as there is no relationship between IT investment and ROA. Research limitations/implications: First, this study is using a limited sample data as an established large sample data set in relation to IT investment information in PLC’s is still unavailable. Secondly, this study is unable to investigate a time lag effect due to the limited information available in the annual reports. State your limitation here. Thirdly, the IT investments are divided into two asset classes, but there is several ways to characterize the ?rm’s investment allocations. Practical implications: This study substantiates the need for PLCs to increase their IT investment as the company grows. Information technology strategies need to be developed at par with company’s future direction. Originality/value: This study is one of the first empirically studies done in investigating the relationship between IT investment and firm financial performance in Malaysian PLC’s which is using the public listed companies’ secondary data.
