Abstract

Abstract. Mastering English is very urgent considering Indonesia as a developing country has crucial status in the worldwide consciousness both political, social, cultural, and economic. Hence, the ability of international connections has been attached to the official program of what children learn at school from fundamental to undergraduate students. The study aimed to implement English Language Immersion: Local Wisdom-Based Reading Material as a platform to resolve a solution and to find Naposo Nauli Bulung perception of this program. The target of the study was 90 Naposo Nauli Bulung, ranging in age from 12-25 years old who have not gotten married. They learn English based on local reading material which provides cross-cultural understanding and communicate more effectively in English as a foreign language. The research was a qualitative and quantitative method. The instruments of the study were interview guidelines, questionnaires, and observations. The process of English Language Immersion in Local Wisdom-Based Reading Material through four stages namely (Orientation, Preparation, Implementation, and Evaluation). According to the questionnaire results, 95% of respondents said the program is interesting, 95% said the immersion includes a component of local wisdom, 97% said the reading materials are simple to understand, 95% said each topic has a list of difficult words, 95% said the reading materials encourage readers to think critically, 95% said each topic contains tasks or assignments, and 96% said the program enables them to learn more about the people and culture.Keywords: English Language Immersion; local wisdom; reading material; EFLAbstrak. Penguasaan bahasa Inggris sangat mendesak mengingat Indonesia sebagai negara berkembang memiliki status krusial dalam kesadaran dunia baik politik, sosial, budaya maupun ekonomi. Oleh karena itu, kemampuan koneksi internasional telah melekat pada program resmi dari apa yang dipelajari anak-anak di sekolah dari dasar hingga sarjana. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengimplementasikan English Language Immersion: Local Wisdom-Based Reading Material sebagai platform untuk menyelesaikan sebuah solusi dan mendapatkan persepsi Naposo Nauli Bulung terhadap program ini.  Sasaran penelitian adalah 90 Naposo Nauli Bulung, berusia 12-25 tahun yang belum menikah. Mereka belajar bahasa Inggris berdasarkan bahan bacaan lokal yang memberikan pemahaman lintas budaya dan berkomunikasi lebih efektif dalam bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Instrumen penelitian berupa pedoman wawancara, angket, tes dan observasi. Proses English Language Immersion: Local Wisdom-Based Reading Material melalui empat tahapan yaitu (Orientasi, Persiapan, Pelaksanaan, dan Evaluasi). Dari hasil kuesioner yang diberikan, 95% menjawab program ini menarik, 95% menyatakan program ini mengandung unsur kearifan lokal, 97% mengatakan bahan bacaannya mudah dipahami, 95% menjawab setiap topik memiliki kosakata yang sulit, 95% menjawab bahan bacaan memungkinkan pembaca untuk berpikir secara mendalam, 95% mengatakan setiap topik berisi tugas atau latihan, dan 96% menyatakan bahwa program ini memungkinkan mereka untuk mendapatkan wawasan tentang budaya dan tradisi masyarakat setempat.Kata kunci: English Language Immersion; kearifan lokal; bahan bacaan; EFL

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of a contemporary teaching model of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) using English Conversational Gambits as language material, which focuses on improving students' speaking skills. However, this study examine students' attitudes toward implementing learning models in terms of behavioral, cognitive, and emotional aspects. This present study was conducted at a university in Tasikmalaya. This present study used quantitative and qualitative designs following the purpose of the present study. As the results of quantitative data, it was found that the sig. (2- tailed) of t-test value is .001 which is smaller than .05 value. The results showed that the used of PjBL model improves students' proficiency in speaking by optimizing the process of EFL teaching and learning using material of English conversational gambits. In addition, according to the qualitative data analysis, this study shows that most of the students showed a positive attitude toward the implementation of the learning model. This study demonstrated by implementing PjBL model with English Conversational Gambits can be alternative strategy in EFL instructional techniques that can improve students' speaking skills.Keywords: classroom speaking practices; English Conversation Gambits; Project-Based Learning (PjBL); students’ speaking proficiencyAbstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas model Pembelajaran Berbasis Proyek (PjBL) dengan metode Conversation Gambits atau pembukaan percakapan dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa dalam bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga mengkaji sikap siswa terhadap model pembelajaran yang diterapkan ditinjau dari aspek perilaku, kognitif, dan emosional. Penelitian ini telah dilaksanakan di salah satu universitas di Tasikmalaya. Pendekatan kuantitatif dan kualitatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Hasil analisis data dari pendekatan kuantitatif, ditemukan bahwa sig. (2-tailed) dan nilai pada uji-t adalah 0,001 lebih kecil dari 0,05. Temuan lainnya juga menunjukkan bahwa model PjBL dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris siswa dengan mengoptimalkan penggunaan metode Conversation Gambit selama pembelajaran berlangsung. Dari analisis data kualitatif, ditemukan bahwa sebagian besar siswa menunjukkan sikap positif terhadap penerapan model pembelajaran PjBL dan Conversation Gambit. Penelitian ini menyarankan agar penerapan model PjBL dapat dikolaborasikan dengan Conversation Gambit sebagai salah satu strategi pengajaran dalam kelas EFL untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa.Kata kunci: kelas praktik berbicara; pembukaan percakapan; Pembelajaran Berbasis Proyek (PjBL); kemampuan berbicara siswa

Abstract

Abstract. The aim of the research is to investigate the implementation of Discovery Listening. This study focused on the use of the Discovery Listening technique as well as the perception of the students after using Discovery Listening technique. To a great extent, this study wanted to give an account of the study conducted by Ardini, et al. (2020) who applied Wilson’s theory. It was achieved using explanatory sequential mixed-methods research design within 30 students of the 1st semester of Universitas PGRI Semarang. Tests and questionnaire were employed to collect the data which then analyzed using SPSS version 27 and supported by descriptive qualitative data. The result shows the mean score of pre-test was 55.17 and post-test was 72.20. The findings of this study indicated that the implementation of the Discovery Listening technique has improved students’ performance by showing 74% of the students’ score was upgraded and 2 respondents got outstanding achievement from Low to High. Additionally, it can alter the environment of educational activities, transforming a passive class into an active one. The group work also helped the students to overcome their listening problem. Those indicated that it gave positive perceptions from the students, most importantly, the students can learn a new thing. The results of this study can support the previous study from Ardini, et al. (2020) that Discovery Listening is very effective to be applied in higher education as well as increasing students’ critical thinking.Keywords: effectiveness; Discovery Listening technique; higher education; listening competenceAbstrak. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki implementasi Discovery Listening. Studi ini berfokus pada penggunaan teknik Discovery Listening serta persepsi siswa setelah menggunakan teknik Discovery Listening. Secara garis besar, penelitian ini ingin memberikan penjelasan tentang penelitian yang dilakukan oleh Ardini, dkk. (2020) yang menerapkan teori Wilson. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan desain penelitian metode campuran sekuensial melalui 30 siswa semester 1 Universitas PGRI Semarang. Tes dan kuesioner digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data yang kemudian dianalisis menggunakan SPSS versi 27 dan didukung oleh data kualitatif deskriptif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan nilai rata-rata pre-test adalah 55,17 dan post-test adalah 72,20. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penerapan teknik Discovery Listening telah meningkatkan kinerja siswa sebanyak 74% nilai siswa meningkat dan 2 siswa berhasil melompat dari kriteria rendah ke tinggi. Selain itu, dapat mengubah lingkungan kegiatan pendidikan, mengubah kelas pasif menjadi kelas aktif. Kerja kelompok juga membantu siswa untuk mengatasi masalah mendengarkan mereka. Hasil tersebut mengindikasikan adanya persepsi positif dari siswa, yang paling penting, para siswa dapat mempelajari hal baru. Hasil penelitian ini dapat mendukung penelitian sebelumnya dari Ardini, dkk. (2020), bahwa Discovery Listening sangat efektif diterapkan di perguruan tinggi serta meningkatkan berpikir kritis mahasiswa. Oleh karena itu, disarankan kepada peneliti selanjutnya untuk menerapkan Discovery Listening pada jenjang pendidikan yang lebih rendah seperti SMA atau bahkan SD.Kata kunci: efektivitas; keterampilan mendengarkan; pendidikan tinggi; teknik Discovery Listening

Abstract

Abstract. The aims of this study are to identify the types of slang word formation using Yule’s (2019) theory and to investigate the subtitling strategies of expansion and paraphrase employed by translators in translating slang words using Gottlieb’s (1992) theory. The data used in this research are slang words in English subtitles and their Indonesian translations in the movie Work It, Moxie, and He's All That. Moreover, the researchers used the descriptive qualitative method. As a result, the researchers found that there were 80 data found from the three movies. The researchers found that only 6 word-formations were identified in the three movie subtitles. The word formations were coinage, compounding, clipping, derivation, conversion, and multiple processes. Furthermore, the researchers found that there were only 3 data from the three movies that applied the expansion strategy. Meanwhile, there were 77 data from the three movies that applied the paraphrase strategy. The results indicate that the paraphrase strategy is frequently employed because most of the slang words used in movies is required generalization, modification, and alteration to be understood by the target audience.Keywords: expansion strategy; paraphrase strategy; slang; subtitling strategy; word formationAbstrak. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis pembentukan kata slang menggunakan teori Yule (2019) dan untuk menyelidiki strategi takarir, yaitu strategi expansi dan parafrasa yang digunakan oleh penerjemah dalam menerjemahkan kata-kata slang menggunakan teori Gottlieb (1992). Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kata-kata slang dalam takarir bahasa Inggris dan terjemahan bahasa Indonesianya dalam film Work It, Moxie, dan He's All That. Selain itu, peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Hasilnya, peneliti menemukan ada 80 data yang ditemukan dari ketiga film tersebut. Peneliti menemukan bahwa hanya 6 pembentukan kata yang diidentifikasi dalam tiga film. Pembentukan kata tersebut yaitu coinage, compounding, clipping, derivation, conversion, dan multiple processes. Selanjutnya peneliti menemukan bahwa hanya ada 3 data dari ketiga film yang menerapkan strategi ekspansi. Sementara itu, terdapat 77 data dari tiga film yang menerapkan strategi parafrasa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa strategi parafrasa sering digunakan karena kebanyakan kata slang yang digunakan dalam film memerlukan generalisasi, modifikasi, dan perubahan agar dapat dipahami oleh khalayak sasaran.Kata kunci: pembentukan kata; slang; strategi ekspansi; strategi parafrasa; strategi subtitling

Abstract

Abstract. The decline of academic skills in the field of education, known as learning loss, is one of the impacts of online distance learning performed over a prolonged period. One of the outcomes is that the instructional value of reading material or e-books provided by educators to students in online classrooms is seen as tedious and inefficient because if the method is carried out monotonously and not varied, it can reduce students’ interest in reading skills. In response to the preceding statement, the purpose of this study is to investigate problems related to learning loss on students' interest in reading, as well as describe the Know-Want-Learned-Affect (KWLA) as a model of prevention of the problem. This research employed a qualitative methodology with a descriptive technique to describe the gathered data. In addition, 90 students participated in completing the questionnaire as a research instrument, and the authors used a literature study as an additional source of data. The research shows that 70.8% of respondents reported experiencing learning loss during online education, although 46% said they read extensively during this time. However, the impact of learning loss makes it difficult for students to comprehend reading material from books, and the number of words in a passage causes students to lose interest in reading it. This indicated that the majority of students experienced learning loss and lost interest in reading and studying through online education. KWLA learning paradigm is believed to be beneficial in preventing learning loss and restoring students’ enthusiasm for reading by overcoming this obstacle.Keywords: college student; educational value; KWLA; learning loss; reading skillsAbstrak. Penurunan kemampuan akademis di bidang pendidikan, atau learning loss, merupakan salah satu dampak dari pembelajaran jarak jauh daring yang dilakukan dalam jangka waktu yang lama. Salah satu dampaknya adalah nilai instruksional dari bahan bacaan atau e-book yang diberikan oleh pendidik kepada peserta didik di kelas daring dianggap membosankan dan tidak efisien karena jika cara tersebut dilakukan secara monoton dan tidak bervariatif dapat menurunkan ketertarikan siswa pada kemampuan membaca. Menanggapi pernyataan sebelumnya, tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki masalah yang berkaitan dengan learning loss minat siswa dalam kemampuan membaca, serta mendeskripsikan Know-Want-Learned-Affect (KWLA) sebagai model pencegahan masalah tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metodologi kualitatif dengan teknik deskriptif untuk mendeskripsikan data yang telah dikumpulkan. Selain itu, 90 siswa berpartisipasi dalam mengisi kuesioner sebagai instrumen penelitian, dan penulis menggunakan studi literatur sebagai sumber data tambahan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 70,8% responden melaporkan mengalami learning loss selama pendidikan online, meskipun 46% mengatakan mereka banyak membaca selama ini. Namun, dampak dari learning loss membuat siswa sulit memahami bahan bacaan dari buku, dan banyaknya kata dalam suatu bacaan menyebabkan siswa kehilangan minat untuk membacanya. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas siswa mengalami learning loss dan kehilangan minat membaca dan belajar melalui pendidikan daring. Paradigma pembelajaran KWLA diyakini bermanfaat dalam mencegah kehilangan belajar dan mengembalikan antusiasme siswa untuk membaca dengan mengatasi hambatan ini.Kata Kunci: mahasiswa; nilai pendidikan; KWLA; learning loss; kemampuan membaca

Abstract

Abstract. Abstract is an essential part of a scientific paper. However, according to the finding of researchers working in the repository at the (UIN) Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh, many students still do not comply with the rules for writing scientific papers. This study aims to analyze the types of sentence complexity in the thesis abstracts of UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh students and the level of use of sentence complexity in scientific papers by students of UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh. This study used a qualitative approach with descriptive and content analysis methods. The data were obtained from the Repository UIN Ar-Raniry through purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s method. The result shows four types of sentence complexity in abstract writing, namely simple sentence (24.58%), compound sentence (25.97%), complex sentence (26.25%,) and compound-complex Sentence (23.19 %). The level of sentence complexity in student scientific abstracts includes complex sentences containing independent clause + noun clause, independent clause + adjective clause, independent clause + noun clause + adverbial clause. This finding contributes to improving the skills of students' ability in scientific writing.Keywords: abstract writing; scientific papers; sentence complexityAbstrak. Abstrak merupakan bagian terpenting dalam sebuah karya ilmiah. Menurut temuan peneliti dari repositori UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh, masih banyak mahasiswa yang tidak mematuhi aturan penulisan karya ilmiah. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menganalisis jenis kompleksitas kalimat dalam abstrak skripsi mahasiswa UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh dan tingkat penggunaan kompleksitas kalimat dalam karya ilmiah oleh mahasiswa UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode analisis deskriptif yang  menggunakan pendekatan analisis isi. Data diperoleh dari Repository UIN Ar-Raniry melalui teknik pengambilan sampel purposive. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan metode Miles and Huberman. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat empat jenis kompleksitas kalimat dalam penulisan abstrak yang terdiri atas kalimat sederhana 24,58%, kalimat majemuk 25,97%, kalimat kompleks 26,25%, dan kalimat majemuk-kompleks 23,19%. Tingkat kerumitan kalimat dalam menulis abstrak ilmiah terdiri atas kalimat kompleks yang mengandung independent clause + noun clause, independent clause + adjective clause, independent clause + noun clause + adverbial clause. Temuan ini memberikan kontribusi untuk meningkatkan keterampilan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menulis ilmiah.Kata kunci: kompleksitas kalimat; karya ilmiah; penulisan abstrak
