Abstract

Abstract. This research aims at investigating the use of DMs in expository essays written by Indonesian EFL learners with different levels of English language proficiency. 10 students from the second semester of Civil Airport Engineering Program at Politeknik Penerbangan Surabaya (Aviation Polytechnic of Surabaya) were taken as the sample. They were divided into two groups, high and low competence of writing skill. To represent the targeted DMs, it relies on Fraser’s taxonomy. The result of students’ writing indicates that students with high and low competence of writing skill employed comparable rates of discourse markers in their essays. Those who have lower competence of writing skill were found using more limited sets of discourse markers than those who have higher competence of writing skill. The students having low competence of writing skill were also found using these DMs in narrow range of functions and in a more limited set of positions. Moreover, the discourse markers that are used by the students having low competence of writing skill were found more redundant from the point of view of syntactic categories. On the other hand, the DMs used by the high competence of writing skill were found more varieties. It could be concluded that the use of discourse markers is affected by the levels of writing competence of EFL learners. Keywords: discourse markers, EFL learners, English language proficiency, written discourse.

Abstract

Abstract. Pronunciation is essential in language learning; thus, English learners as a second language should strive for articulateness in sound patterns in English. This study aimed to determine the commonly mispronounced consonant sound of the Bachelor of Elementary Education students of the Visayas State University according to the manner and place of articulation. The instrument used in the study is the Golden-Fristoe Test of Articulation, which is composed of 44 words containing the different consonant sounds in English. The study results revealed that most consonant sounds misarticulated by the respondents were fricatives /z/, the nasal consonant sound /m/, the fricative sound /ð/, the affricate /dz/. With respect to the place of articulation, most consonant sounds misarticulated by the respondents concerning the place of articulation were alveolar /z/, the velar consonant sound /m/, the interdental sound /ð/, the post-alveolar /dz/. With these results, it is expected for the Filipino English language teachers to focus on teaching the alveolar and labiodental fricatives in teaching the consonant sounds because most students failed to articulate these sounds correctly.Keywords: English language, consonant sounds, pronunciationAbstrak.  Pelafalan sangat penting dalam pembelajaran bahasa. Oleh karena itu, pelajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa kedua harus berusaha keras untuk mengartikulasikan pola bunyi dalam bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bunyi konsonan yang sering salah diucapkan pada mahasiswa S1 Pendidikan Dasar Universitas Negeri Visayas menurut cara dan tempat artikulasi. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Golden-Fristoe Test of Articulation, yang terdiri atas 44 kata yang berisi bunyi konsonan yang berbeda dalam bahasa Inggris. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bunyi konsonan yang paling banyak salah artikulasi oleh responden adalah bunyi konsonan / z /, bunyi konsonan nasal / m /, bunyi frikatif / ð /, afrikat / dz /. Sehubungan dengan tempat artikulasi, sebagian besar bunyi konsonan yang salah diartikulasikan oleh responden mengenai tempat artikulasi adalah alveolar / z /, bunyi konsonan velar / m /, bunyi interdental / ð /, post-alveolar / dz /. Dengan hasil tersebut diharapkan para pengajar bahasa Inggris Filipina dapat fokus dalam mengajarkan frikatif alveolar dan labiodental dalam mengajarkan bunyi konsonan karena sebagian besar siswa gagal mengucapkan bunyi tersebut dengan benar. Abstract

Abstract. This study is aimed at investigating the types of cohesive devices and their relationship which are found in an article of Time magazine entitled “how covid-19 will shape the class of 2020 for the rest of their live”. In conducting this study, the researchers employ descriptive qualitative as the research design. Meanwhile, in collecting the data, the researcher applied a purposive sampling method by choosing an article in an on line Time magazine. Meanwhile, the text was analyzed using systemic functional linguistics (SFL) especially those contributing to the cohesion of the text, including grammatical and lexical cohesion. The result of this study reveals that the text is “hang-together” which is described by the successfully use of cohesive devices. These patterns indicate that the writer of the article introduces the capacity to create a text with cohesion not only at the clause level but also to create text with better unity, flow and connectedness of information of the whole text. Besides, the use of cohesion in the text can create a relationship between language elements. Furthermore, the text of the article uses some simple cohesive devices such as reference, conjunction, repetition, and synonym.Keywords: cohesion, cohesive devices, language elements, magazine, SFLAbstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki jenis perangkat kohesif dan keterkaitannya dalam artikel majalah Time berjudul “how covid-19 will shape the class of 2020 for the rest of their live”. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Sedangkan dalam pengumpulan data, peneliti menggunakan sampel purposive dengan memilih artikel di majalah on line Time. Sedangkan teks dianalisis dengan menggunakan linguistik fungsional sistemik (LFS) terutama yang berkontribusi pada kohesi teks, termasuk kohesi gramatikal dan leksikal. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa teks yang dihasilkan oleh penulis “saling terpadu” yang digambarkan dengan berhasilnya penggunaan elemen perangkat kohesif. Pola-pola ini menunjukkan bahwa penulis artikel memunculkan kapasitas untuk membuat teks dengan kohesi tidak hanya pada tingkat klausa tetapi juga untuk membuat teks dengan kesatuan, aliran, dan keterhubungan informasi yang lebih baik dari keseluruhan teks. Selain itu penggunaan kohesi dalam teks dapat menciptakan hubungan antar elemen bahasa. Lebih lanjut lagi, teks tersebut menggunakan beberapa perangkat kohesif sederhana seperti referensi, konjungsi dan juga pengulangan, dan sinonim.Kata kunci: kohesi,  peranti kohesi, unsur bahasa, LSF, majalah, perangkat kohesif

Abstract

Abstract. Cyber literature has been academically recognized in literary studies through multiple research studies. Cyber literature is manifested in various cyberspace, both maintained individually and professionally. Writing platforms on the internet, such as Wattpad, have been widely used. They provide space for writers and engage readers to create online writing communities. One of the most popular genres found in cyber literature is romance chick-lit, in which most main characters are working women. Although most protagonists are working women who are financially independent, they still search for men who have higher positions, social levels, and financial stability. They wish that such men will find and save them, referred to by Colette Dowling as Cinderella complex. The study investigates the Cinderella complex's indications on female protagonists in two Wattpad chick lit works: 1) Furious Boss & Naughty Secretary, and 2) Ex-lovers but Married. The indications of Cinderella Complex were shown through 1) the wish to be saved, 2) the girl-child lives on, 3) the achievement gap, 4) the intimations of helplessness, and 5) the blind devotion.Keywords: Cinderella complex; cyber literature, WattpadAbstrak. Sastra cyber sudah diperhitungkan sebagai bagian dari studi sastra secara akademik melalui berbagai penelitian yang sudah dilakukan. Sastra cyber terwujud di dalam berbagai ruang cyber, baik itu dijalankan secara individual maupun profesional. Platform menulis pada internet seperti Wattpad sudah marak digunakan sebagai tempat berkarya bagi penulis serta menarik perhatian pembaca untuk menciptkana suatu komunitas menulis secara online. Salah satu genre populer pada sastra cyber adalah chicklit romantis yang mana karakter utamanya adalah wanita pekerja.  Meskipun protagonis wanita merupakan wanita pekerja yang independen secara finansial, mereka masih mengharapkan pasangan yang berada di posisi, tingkat sosial dan kestabilan finansial yang lebih besar dari mereka. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mencari indikasi adanya Cinderella complex pada karakter protagonis perempuan melalui dua karya chicklit di Wattpad, yaitu: 1) Furious Boss & Naughty Secretary, dan 2) Mantan Tapi Menikah. Indikasi Cinderella complex yang ditemukan adalah 1) keinginan untuk diselamatkan, 2) gadis-kecil yang hidup di dalam diri, 3) kesenjangan prestasi, 4) tanda ketidakmampuan, dan 5) kepatuhan yang buta.Kata kunci: Cinderella complex; sastra cyber, Wattpad

Abstract

Abstract. In globalization era, hoax has been widely spread on social media and disturbs the well-built relationship of Indonesian people. Even it often breaks the unity of people. Lack of knowledge in how to identify hoax has let readers be hypnotized to believe that the news is real. This study is aimed to develop "KAPAK HOAKS (HOAX AXE)" model (Reader's independence in analyzing hoax content). This study uses the theory of CDA model of Fairclough by Umar Fauzan (2013). The study method used in this article is qualitative method with critical linguistics study approach. The authors of this study have collected analysis theories of critical literature able to be used to analyze data of hoax circulating on social media. The analysis is conducted by matching data corpus with the chosen theory. Through the analysis, the authors have identified language aspects supporting self-checking improvement. It is also mentioned by Eriyanto (2001) about hoax analysis. To reach perfection, this study considers that the future research needs to involve response test on social media readers' positive independence in responding hoax.Keywords: corpus, hoax, linguistics, semiotics, social mediaAbstrak. Di era globalisasi, hoax telah merajalela di media sosial dan mengganggu silaturahmi masyarakat Indonesia yang terjalin baik. Bahkan seringkali merusak persatuan umat. Kurangnya pengetahuan tentang bagaimana mengidentifikasi hoax membuat pembaca terhipnotis untuk percaya bahwa berita itu nyata. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan model "KAPAK HOAKS (HOAX AX)" (Kemandirian Pembaca dalam menganalisis konten hoax). Penelitian ini menggunakan teori model CDA Fairclough menurut Fauzan (2013). Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam artikel ini adalah metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi linguistik kritis. Penulis penelitian ini telah mengumpulkan teori analisis literatur kritis yang dapat digunakan untuk menganalisis data hoax yang beredar di media sosial. Analisis dilakukan dengan mencocokkan korpus data dengan teori yang dipilih. Melalui analisis, penulis telah mengidentifikasi aspek bahasa yang mendukung peningkatan pemeriksaan diri. Hal tersebut juga dikemukakan oleh Eriyanto (2001) tentang analisis hoax. Untuk mencapai kesempurnaan, penelitian ini memandang bahwa penelitian ke depan perlu melibatkan uji respon terhadap kemandirian positif pembaca media sosial dalam merespon hoax.Kata kunci: corpus, hoax, linguistics, semiotics, social media

Abstract

Abstract. With skyrocketing development of online learning due to the Covid-19 outbreak, pronunciation classroom is one of the evidences that was quite affected by this pandemic situation. The controversial mindset, that this lesson needs literally face-to-face practices since they relate to organ speech's output, leads the authors into this investigation. This paper was aimed at finding out students' response toward the implementation of blended learning in pronunciation classrooms. The research design was descriptive quantitative with the population of 176 fourth semester students of English Education Department of Universitas PGRI Semarang in the academic year of 2019/2020, and 28 students coming from 4A to 4D were taken as the sample. The data were collected online through Google Form using a perception questionnaire and confirmed by phone call interview preceded by classroom observation. The data from the questionnaire were then analyzed quantitatively to determine the level of students' perception supported by descriptive data from the interviews. The results indicated that students' perception toward blended learning in the Pronunciation classroom was in the level of intermediate. Additionally, the interview revealed that the students were satisfied with blended learning implementation in Pronunciation classroom. They preferred online classes which were balanced in terms of assignment-giving and learning material. Too many assignments with fewer materials only burden the students. Therefore, the lecturers were suggested to consider their ability in handling the class, which also interests students in engaging the online classes more.Keywords: blended learning; pronunciation, higher education, students' perceptionAbstrak. Pesatnya perkembangan pembelajaran online akibat dari wabah Covid, kelas pronunciation sebagai salah satu bukti yang cukup terpengaruh oleh situasi pandemi ini. Pola pikir kontroversi, bahwa pelajaran pronunciation benar-benar membutuhkan praktik tatap muka karena berkaitan dengan luaran speech organs, sehingga mengarahkan peneliti ke permasalahan ini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui respons mahasiswa terhadap penerapan blended learning di kelas pronunciation. Desain penelitian adalah deskriptif kuantitatif dengan populasi 176 mahasiswa semester IV Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas PGRI Semarang tahun ajaran 2019/2020 dan diambil sampel 28 mahasiswa dari 4A sampai 4D. Pengumpulan data dilakukan secara online melalui google form menggunakan kuesioner persepsi dan dikonfirmasi dengan wawancara melalui telepon yang didahului dengan observasi kelas. Data dari kuesioner dianalisis secara kuantitatf didukung oleh data interview yang dianalisis secara deskriptif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa persepsi mahasiswa terhadap blended learning di kelas pronunciation berada pada level intermediate. Selain itu, hasil wawancara menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa merasa puas dengan penerapan blended learning di kelas pronunciation. Mereka lebih menyukai kelas online yang seimbang dalam hal pemberian tugas dan materi pembelajaran. Terlalu banyak tugas dengan materi yang lebih sedikit hanya akan membebani mahasiswa. Oleh karena itu, para dosen disarankan untuk mempertimbangkan kemampuannya dalam menangani perkuliahan yang juga menarik minat mahasiswa untuk lebih banyak terlibat dalam kelas online.   Kata kunci: blended learning; pronunciation, pendidikan tinggi, persepsi mahasiswa

Abstract

Abstract. This study was conducted to investigate the types of questions which were difficult in TOEFL-like and to find the students’ difficulties in answering the ‘Structure and Written Expression’ of TOEFL-like. The subjects of this study were the batch 5 students of Master of English Education (S2 MPBI) at STKIP PGRI Sidoarjo who had TOEFL-like test as the placement test in taking master’s degree. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. The instruments were students’ results of the TOEFL-like Test and interview. The data were taken from Longman Complete Course for the TOEFL written by Deborah Phillips (2003). The results show that there are 18 items (45%) categorized ‘difficult’. Meanwhile, there are 22 items (55%) categorized into ‘very difficult’. There are several reasons of students’ difficulties in answering the ‘Structure and Written Expression’ on the TOEFL-like done as the placement test. First, there was no preparation in advance. Second, students lack of vocabulary. Third, the test was considered difficult because the students took the TOEFL-like for the first time. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis soal yang sulit dalam TOEFL-like dan untuk mengetahui kesulitan mahasiswa dalam menjawab 'Structure and Written Expression' dari TOEFL-like. Subjek penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Batch 5 program Magister Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris (S2 MPBI) STKIP PGRI Sidoarjo yang mengikuti tes TOEFL-like sebagai tes penempatan dalam mengambil gelar magister. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah Tes TOEFL-like dan wawancara. Pengumpulan data diambil dari Longman Complete Course untuk TOEFL yang ditulis oleh Deborah Phillips. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 18 soal (45%) yang dikategorikan 'sulit'. Sementara itu, terdapat 22 soal (55%) yang dikategorikan 'sangat sulit'. Ada beberapa alasan kesulitan mahasiswa dalam menjawab 'Structure and Written Expression' pada TOEFL-like seperti yang dilakukan saat tes penempatan. Pertama, tidak ada persiapan sebelumnya. Kedua, kurangnya penguasaan kosakata. Ketiga, tes dianggap sulit karena mahasiswa baru pertama kali mengikuti TOEFL-like. Abstract

Abstract. During COVID-19 pandemic, educators implement online learning in the education process. Basic interactive models of online learning available, such as synchronous learning, as a face-to-face learning process through online media. This research investigates the students’ perception toward the implementation of synchronous learning in ELT especially TOEFL. This research is qualitative. The results show that: 1) 51 % of students use Zoom and Live YouTube in learning TOEFL. 2) 89.7 % of students use mobile phones in online learning. 3) 49.7 % of students agree that Zoom has complete features. 4) 83.2 % of students agree that operating Zoom’s features is very easy. 5) 74.2 % of students agree that Zoom is easy-used. 6) 72.9 % of students agree that using Zoom in learning TOEFL is effective. 7) 73 % of students agree that using Live YouTube in learning TOEFL also effective. 8) 63.9 % agree that in Zoom, they can participate by face-to-face interactions (e.g. question-answer even discussion with lecturer and classmates. 9) 95.5 % of students agree that using YouTube, videos can be seen anytime and anywhere because videos are stored on the lecturer’s channel. In the understanding level of TOEFL, 83.2 % of students really understand in the listening section, 89.7 % of students understand the reading section, and 81.3 % of students understand the Structure and Written Expression section. Several problems affect learning TOEFL with Zoom and YouTube. Students have a problem with an internet connection. The other problems are internet quota, technical problems of the device (e.g battery, device dead suddenly, audio quality, device’s video/audio, and others), device’s type used, and surrounding conditions (e.g light conditions, sounds, or other disturbances). In the next learning system, 80.6 % of students agree that the next learning system implements face-to-face learning and still uses Zoom and YouTube Live Streaming. Model pembelajaran online interaktif dasar yang tersedia, seperti pembelajaran sinkron, sebagai proses pembelajaran tatap muka melalui media online. Penelitian ini mengkaji persepsi siswa terhadap penerapan pembelajaran sinkron di ELT khususnya TOEFL. Penelitian ini bersifat kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa: 1) 51% siswa menggunakan Zoom dan Live YouTube dalam pembelajaran TOEFL. 2) 89,7% siswa menggunakan ponsel dalam pembelajaran online. 3) 49,7% siswa setuju bahwa Zoom memiliki fitur yang lengkap. 4) 83,2% siswa setuju bahwa mengoperasikan fitur Zoom sangat mudah. 5) 74,2% siswa setuju bahwa Zoom mudah digunakan. 6) 72,9% siswa setuju bahwa menggunakan Zoom in learning TOEFL efektif. 7) 73% siswa setuju bahwa menggunakan Live YouTube dalam pembelajaran TOEFL juga efektif. 8) 63,9% setuju bahwa dengan Zoom, mereka dapat berpartisipasi dengan interaksi tatap muka (misalnya tanya jawab bahkan diskusi dengan dosen dan teman sekelas. 9) 95,5% mahasiswa setuju bahwa dengan menggunakan YouTube, video dapat dilihat kapan saja dan di mana saja karena video disimpan di saluran dosen. Pada tingkat pemahaman TOEFL, 83,2% siswa sangat memahami bagian menyimak, 89,7% siswa memahami bagian membaca, dan 81,3% siswa memahami bagian Struktur dan Ekspresi Tertulis. Beberapa masalah memengaruhi pembelajaran TOEFL dengan Zoom dan YouTube. Siswa memiliki masalah dengan koneksi internet. Masalah lainnya adalah kuota internet, masalah teknis perangkat (misal baterai, perangkat mati mendadak, kualitas audio, video/audio perangkat, dan lain-lain), jenis perangkat yang digunakan, dan kondisi sekitarnya (misal kondisi cahaya, suara, atau gangguan lainnya). Pada sistem pembelajaran selanjutnya, 80,6% siswa setuju bahwa sistem pembelajaran selanjutnya menerapkan pembelajaran tatap muka dan masih menggunakan Zoom dan YouTube Live Streaming.Kata kunci: ELT, pembelajaran sinkronus, TOEFL, YouTube, Zoom

Song is one of the propaganda media for ideolgy. Beyonce Knowless's song “Run the World (girls)” is an example of a song that raises the issue of Black Feminism Thought. This paper will discuss how textual and discursive practices through the signs in the text of the song lyrics and video clips of the song in constructing the paradigm of black women power or black feminism thought. By interpreting the structure of the text in the lyrics of the song and the visual signs in the video clip of the song "Run the World (girls)" to find meaning and ideology reproduced in the song. The results show that the dialectic of verbal and visual signs represents black women power and to bolster black women to become well-respected women especially by black men. The presence of this song is also related to the black feminist movement which propagates their ideology through song media. The independence of black women in the economic and educational aspectss, as well as the ability to bare children are discourses that are reproduced by the singer to make social changes in black women’s live.Keywords: Black woman, discourse, hermeneutics, ideology, Paul Ricouer

Abstract

Abstract. This present study aims to investigate the correlation between students’ perceptions of Slack application and their motivations in writing skills. An analysis of the research literature in perception and motivation as Wei and Elias (2011) theory revealed that students’ perceptions of classroom environment play an essential role in promoting students’ motivation in learning a language. A quantitative correlation was used in this present study. Thus, the data were collected by employing close-ended questionnaires towards Likert Scale technique. However, this study was conducted at one university in Tasikmalaya. The findings show that the correlation coefficient of rxy is 0.77. According to the strength of the correlation table, the rxy= 0.77 lies between 0.75 and 0.99 which means there is a correlation between students’ perceptions of online Slack application and their motivations in writing. This study suggested that Slack Application can be used as an alternative to facilitate students’ engagement in classroom activities.Keywords: ICT, Slack application, students’ motivation, writing skillAbstrak. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki hubungan yang ada antara persepsi siswa tentang aplikasi Slack dan motivasi mereka dalam keterampilan menulis. Analisis literatur penelitian dalam persepsi dan motivasi sebagai teori Wei dan Elias (2011) mengungkapkan bahwa persepsi siswa tentang lingkungan kelas memainkan peran penting dalam mempromosikan motivasi siswa dalam belajar bahasa. Korelasi kuantitatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Dengan demikian, pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan kuesioner tertutup terhadap teknik Skala Likert. Namun penelitian ini dilakukan di salah satu Universitas di Tasikmalaya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa rxy memiliki koefisien korelasi sebesar 0,77. Berdasarkan tabel kekuatan hubungan, rxy = 0.77 berada di antara 0.75 dan 0.99 yang berarti hubungan tersebut sangat kuat. Studi ini menyarankan bahwa Slack Application dapat menjadi cara lain untuk memfasilitasi keterlibatan siswa dalam kegiatan kelas.Kata kunci: aplikasi Slack, ICT, keterampilan menulis, motivasi siswa
