Abstract

Pre-service training becomes one of the steps should be undergone by the teacher or instructor trainees in anticipating and handling problems that may occur in the real teaching. This research is conducted to reveal the implementation of pre-service training for English instructor. This research is conducted at an English course in Kampung Inggris. Kampung Inggris becomes very popular due to many people around the country comes to the place to study English. This is a qualitative research, which employs case study. The data were collected through interview, observation, questionnaire, and document analysis. The interviews were delivered to the informants (the director, teachers, and students). Observation was carried out to observe the implementation of Mastering System Program as the program of pre-service training for instructor. The document analysis was applied to analyze the observation field notes, researcher‘s journals, transcripts from recorded interviews, brochure, time schedule, instructors’ lesson plans, questionnaire, and teaching materials. The result shows that the components of pre-service training for English instructor proposed by Cochran-Smith & Zeichner (2005) are not completely applied at the institution. The component which is applied best in MS Program is the professional experience (practicum). On the other hand, the most prioritizing components that still need some improvements are the curriculum and assessment.DOWNLOAD ABSTRACT

Abstract

This article focused on improving student’s writing skill and promoting students’ good character through Indonesian culture-based story. The objectives are to know how Indonesian culture-based story gives contribution in promoting students’ good characters and improves student’s writing skill in the second semester students of IKIP PGRI Semarang. This study useD true experimental design. The population is the second semester students of IKIP PGRI Semarang. Then, the samples are 67 students as the samples. The instrument of this study are questionnaire and test; which are given as pre-test and post-test. The goal of questionnaire is to know the students’ reflection of good character and the aim of test is to measure the student’s writing skill of the second semester of IKIP PGRI Semarang. Based on data analysis, there were some significance improvements of the student’s score both of students’ reflection of good character and student’s writing skill. It means that Indonesian culture-based story can promote students’ good character and also improve students’ writing skill. From the result of this study, the writer concludes that using Indonesian culture-based story as material is effective and had good effect of students’ good characters and also improve students’ writing skill. Then, this study is expected to be useful for the teachers/lecturers, students, and the readers. The writer proposes to use Indonesian culture-based story as an alternative material in promoting students’ good character and to improve students’ writing skill. Abstract

This paper is about the existence of linguistics landscape along the Soeharso’s street Purwokerto which shows the diverse people in using language of their stores, restaurants, eateries, cafes, or street vendor banner whereby traders use their own prominent language in monolingualism, bilingualism, or multilingualism. For restaurants, eateries, or street vendors, they include person’s name as their stall name, and also include the origin of the food pioneer to show their sense of solidarity, while shops, distros, cafes include English as a powerful weapon in attracting customers based on prestige. Both phenomenon are evidence of how the power and sense of solidarity are raised into the name of business places they build as their strategy in marketing and introducing their business.

Abstract

This article is conveying about translation and poetry as two inseparable yet never-ending phenomena. The translation of this especially written narrative is somehow tricky as a translator is usually required to satisfy the TL readers by providing a decent result. Poetry in TL is most of the time expected to come with equivalent dictions and form as written in SL. The writer here is trying to apply the notion of Skopostheorie in translating poetry. Based on the theory of skopos or ‘purpose’, one can choose to translate from SL to TL based on the purpose of the need. In the article, the writer gives the examples of two poems with different purpose of translating: One for the sake of the diction, while the other is for the sake of the form. At the level of conclusion, the Skopostheorie admits that not all ideals can be reached during the quest of poetry translation. Suggested by the Skopostheorie, a poetry translation has to have its own purpose and not to meddle it with others in order to produce a focused TL product.

Abstract

This study investigates factors supporting and hindering the implementation or the use of English by the students of International Class Program (ICP) Faculty of Tarbiyah, UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. The primary purpose of this study is to provide recommendations for the Faculty especially the program coor-dinator to acknowledge the problems that need to be solved. This study involved a number of students joining the program. To obtain the data, interviews and questionnaires were distributed to 30 students. After analyz-ing the data, factors supporting and hindering the use of English at ICP were identified. Factors supporting the program are: (1) the students’ motivation, (2) the role of lecturers, and (3) the instructional materials. However, some factors hindering the program include: (1) not all students had an electronic English diction-ary, (2) both the lecturers and the students were inconsistent to use English, (3) the poor students’ English mastery sometimes also hindered the teaching process, (4) there was no language forums held in English, (5) there was no language lab, (6) the students had not been aware of the importance of practicing English, (7) the ICP students claimed that most of the materials they learned were written in Indonesian. The program coordinator acknowledges the students’ interest in learning English. As has been stated before, most of the students have high motivation to learn English. Thus, the program coordinator (1) should notice this and be very sensitive with this situation, because the students’ motivation is a very important thing in gaining more English development, needs to give extended role to the lecturers. They are required not only teaching the content materials but also some aspects of English entities, (3) needs to explain clearly that both lecturers and students need to make an agreement regarding the consistency of using English. Abstract

That there are many grammatical features of English which are different from those of bahasa Indonesia and of other local languages in Indonesia should be academically and culturally understood by EFL learners in Indonesia. Most EFL learners say that they have known grammatical features and functions concerning with the English tenses, but some facts tell that they fail to use the appropriate tenses in speaking and in writing short texts. This condition was found at the English Department of FKIP Universitas Bung Hatta, Padang. This paper discusses the cultural-academic gaps commonly faced by the EFL learners at the English Department of FKIP Universitas Bung Hatta, Padang. The discussion of this paper is based on the questions: (i) what are the grammatical problems made by the English Department students of FKIP Universitas Bung Hatta in writing essays concerning with the use of English tenses?; (ii) do they face cultural and academic gaps in understanding and using the English tenses appropriately?; and (iii) why do they face such cultural and academic gaps? The data and discussion presented in this paper are based on the results of pre-research conducted on January 2012, as a part of stages of a Research and Development (R & D) conducted at the English Department of FKIP Universitas Bung Hatta, Padang. Abstract

In doing his work, a translator cannot always present all the meanings contained in the source text comprehensively. He sometimes should reduce the existing meaning, or add a new meaning in the target text, which then results in the phenomenon of “gain”  and “loss” of translation. A factor causing this is the fact that no languages have an absolute likeness. Another factor is the cultural gaps in which the languages involved exist. This strategy is commonly taken up by the translator to give an explanation and reason, and to put an emphasis, which are all ultimately aimed to keep the naturality of translation, without sacrificing the loyality of the original content

Abstract

This research was aimed at seeking out the impacts of Subtitle for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH), Emotional Subtitle (ES), and Caption in the story comprehension capability of the first grade students at SLBN Bolon Colomadu upon the Naruto series episode 89. The research is experimental in which the total sampling is employed since there were three students only in the school. A level finder test was bestowed upon the three to ensure that they shared the same level on story comprehension. A capability test upon the story comprehension was executed to recognize the students’ comprehension on the story of Naruto. A questionnaire session was given to acknowledge the opinions of the students regarding with SDH, ES, and Caption. Analyzing the data, it was found out that SDH received 43.34% subjective positive view and 6.6% objective positive view, ES received 73% subjective positive view and 17% objective positive view, and Caption received 34% subjective positive view and 34% objective positive view. This result pointed out that Caption performed better than the other two because Caption sparked more objective positive view than the other two.

Abstract

This study reports the effectiveness of using Reading to Learnprogramin teaching critical writing to teacher candidates in English Language Teaching Department, Sampoerna School of Education, Jakarta. The Reading to Learn program implemented in this study allows the researchers to employ principles from other theories to do with critical thinking and critical literacy important to the study. Embracing the characteristics of a case study and to some extent a program evaluation research design, data in this study were obtained from classroom observations by the two researchers, collection of samples of students’ texts in various stages of the teaching program and students’ journals written after each teaching session and interviews with the student participating in this study conducted immediately after the teaching program completed. The results revealed that students’ ability to write an English text is better than before indicated by their ability to clearly and explicitly explain details of information in the text they write which surely fulfill the standard outlined in the critical thinking theory used in this study. Abstract

Arguments that the ultimate purpose of L2 acquisition and learning isto communicate have been widely accepted. To get a better result, acombination of instruction and opportunities to practice incommunication is necessary. Instruction can provide learners withcommunicative competence, and practice can improve the automaticprocessing of this competence to communicate (Brown, 2001). CLTinstruction should therefore equip L2 learners with both formal andfunctional aspects of the language. Depending on the context of thelearners, focus on form and function are here viewed as a continuumand complementary to each other. By doing so, it is expected that L2learners are well provided with ability to perceive not only the wholepicture (in this case to communicate) but also small pieces (ofgrammar, form). It is believed that SLTL with activities that focus onboth form (grammar) and function (communication) tends to producelearners with greater accuracy and fluency.
