Abstract

This thesis analyzed of transgender identity in the novel “The Danish Girl” by David Ebershoff. It used queer theory as literature approach. The purpose of this research were factors Einar Wegener as the main character in The Danish Girl novel became a transgender and how does the main character life as a transgender depict in this novel. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data of this research was the novel The Danish Girl by David Ebershoff which was published in 2000 and consists of 29 chapters and 310 pages. While, the instrument of this research was note taking. The technique of the data analysis of this research was linked to the theory, concept, and method. It found two factors that causing being transgender, they are biological factors and environmental factors which environmental factors include family, friends, and doctor. Moreover, the main character’s life as a transgender depict in this novel shows transition, transgender life, and transforming attitude.

Abstract

This thesis is a research about analysis of capitalism in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald by using sociology of literature approach. The purposes of this research were describing affect the capitalism of the novel and described Social Class to each character in the novel The Great Gatsby. This research focuses to the capitalism effects of the novel and the each character interact in different social class. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data of this research was the novel The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald which published in 1925 and consists of 9 chapter and 145 pages. While, the instrument of this research was note taking. The technique of data analysis of this research was linked to the story, concept, and method. It found two types of Capitalism in The Great Gatsby. They were effect of capitalism of the novel and social class between individual, and groups. Meanwhile social life of Gatsby, it found how Gatsby live in loneliness and still love Daisy.

Abstract

Slang words is generally considered as informal style of speech which is used by groups of people in particular community. It can be in the form of a single word, phrase, or sentence. This study is conducted to investigate the slang words found in Deadpool 2 movie. The main objectives of this study are analyzing the lexical and contextuan meaning, types of slang, and the root of slang words. In order to answer the formulated problem, the method used for this study is descriptive qualitative method. The primary source of this study is Deadpool 2 movie directed by David Leitch published in 2018. Meanwhile, the secondary sources of this study are books, e-journal, and e-articles that contained related theories. The theories that used in this research are Mansoer Pateda’s Lexical and Contextual Meaning Theory and Allan and Burridge Types of Slang Theory. According to the result of the research, there are 74 words and phrases found in Deadpool 2 movie. There are five types of slang words also found in the movie. Those are fresh and creative, flippant, clipping, imitative and acronym. It is also found that each slang words has their own root which is categorized into swear words, religion-related, impolite call, sweet call, and expressions.

Abstract

Centered on the 2013 Curriculum (Indonesia's national curriculum), English subject matter is equated to the high school standard. Both high school and vocational school students receive the same English content, while English is to be differentiated for special purposes for high school and vocational high school students. It is difficult to find an English textbook in a vocational school which fits into the department of the student. Additionally, there is often not enough time for teachers to develop English materials for vocational students. This study aims to explore the content that should be included in SMKN 1 Pangsid Kabupaten Sidenreng Rappang to design English language materials based on needs analysis in the Tourism Program and to find out the response of teachers to the development of English material in the Tourism Programme. Fundamental analysis uses Qualitative Descriptive, and the findings are described in terms. The study results indicate that the content to be included in the English language material in the SMKN 1 Pangsid Kabupaten Sidenreng Rappang tourism program is speaking and pronunciation for language skills and components; media videos and images; and asking questions about teaching techniques. Creation of English language materials consists of several speaking practice presentations, many videos to practice listening, speaking and reading, reading sections and documents, and some information that the Tourism Program learners need to know.

Abstract

Compliment responses are one of speech act types in pragmatic study. This study is aimed (1) to investigate the strategies used by the American and Makassarese people in responding to the complim ent, (2) to compare the response tendencies used by American and the Makassarese people based on Gender and age; and (3) to investigate the cultural influences on the American and Makassarese response.The research was a comparative study which and used a descriptive- qualitative approach. The data were collected from youtube.com and DCT questionnaire. The data were analyzed using a number of techniques, namely noting down the utterances, categorizing the responses identified based on Holmes’ semantic formula and explaining the cultural influences based on their responses. Firstly, the research result revealed that both the American and Makassarese people used 3 compliment strategies: accepting, evading and refusing. Americans would use the evading strategy when the speaker and his interlocutor were good friends; while a Makassarese would either use the evading strategy or the refusing strategy in his responses, when the speaker and his interlocutor were of a different kinship hierarchy, such as between the older and the younger brothers or sisters and between husband and wife. Secondly, The comparison of the compliment responses between the American and Makassarese males indicated that an American male had the tendency to evade a compliment in every topic except teenager had tendency to accept the compliment in any topic. While a Makassarese male tend to receive the compliment for all the topics, except for the comp liment for an achievement.on the other hand, an American woman had tendency to accept a compliment for all topics, but an older woman had a tendency to refuse a compliment. a Makassarese woman, had also a tendency to accept a compliment for all topics. Finally, Makassarese people, both men and women had the tendency to accept, evade or refuse compliments when they had kinship.

Abstract

The objectives of the research were to find out: (1) whether or not the use of interactive multimedia improve students reading comprehension in the Eighth-Grade of SMP Negeri 4 Panca Rijang and (2) whether or not the use of interactive multimedia interest students’ in learning reading comprehension in the Eighth-Grade of SMP Negeri 4 Panca Rijang. This research employed mixed method design that applied experimental and control group. The population of the research was the Eighth-Grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Panca Rijang. The result of data analysis showed that there was significant difference between achievement of the students who used interactive multimedia and those who did not use interactive multimedia (conventional technique) in reading comprehension. It was proved by the mean score of experimental group was higher than control group in post-test (59.35 > 46.75). Furthermore, the result of the t-test value (3.581) was greater than t-table (α = 0.05; df = 38; t-table = 2.021) which means that H1 was accepted. The data analysis of questionnaire showed that the students had high interest toward the use of interactive multimedia in reading comprehension. It was supported by 4 students (20%) who were strongly interested, 14 students (70%) who were interested and 2 students (10%) who were moderate. The mean score of students’ answers in questionnaire (79.55) was classified as interested category. Based on the data analysis, the researcher concluded that: (1) the application of interactive multimedia enhanced the students’ ability in reading comprehension; (2) the application of interactive multimedia strategy in reading comprehension was interesting for the students.

Abstract

The objectives of research this research was to find out whether or not the CALL affects the students’ achievement and to find out the students’ attitude in learning English by using CALL. This research applied quasi-experimental method was used in this research by using non-equivalent control class design. The researcher chose and placed the experimental and control design randomly. The researcher took the first-year students of SMK Negeri 1 Pancarijang Kabupaten Sidrap in academic year 2019-2020 as a research subject. Based on the data found in this research, the researcher concludes that; 1) The use of CALL affected the achievement of the first year students of SMK Negeri 1 Pancarijang Kabupaten Sidrap in academic 2012/2013. It was proved by the mean score of pretest and posttest which was obtained from experimental class was 52.44 and 74.59. While the mean scores of pretest and posttest for the control class were 48.03 and 56.48. After analyzing using SPSS 22.0, the researcher found that (0.00<0.05) where the p-value (0.00) at the level of significance (0.05) and the degree of freedom 66. It indicated that the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted and, of course, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. 2) The first-year students of SMK Negeri 1 Pancarijang Kabupaten Sidrap have a positive attitude in learning English through CALL. It was approved by the data that none of the student states negative statement to the use of CALL, 21 students (61.8%) was very favorable who get a score in interval 85-100 and 13 students (38.2%) were favorable in interval 69-84. From the data, the highest score of the students of the students is 100 which is categorized as very favorable, and the lowest score is 70 which is categorized favorable.

Abstract

This article analyzed of the ambivalence of the main character in the novel The Mistress of Spices by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni by using post colonial theory from Bhabha concept that ambivalence, mimicry and hybridity. The purposes of this research were describing the cause of ambivalence by the main character and also to describe mimicry and hybridity potrayed by Tilo as the main character in Divakaruni’s The Mistress of Spices. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative methods to described the answer from the problem formulation. The source of the data of this research was the novel The Mistress of Spices by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni which was published in 1997 and consists of 15 chapters and 317 pages. And, the instrument of this research was note taking. The technique of data analysis of this research was linked to the theory, concept and method. The result found that the main character face the ambivalence because of her rules and love. Living in America is greatly influenced her on the new culture of imitating and hybridizing about American culture.
