Abstract

This article discusses the language used to name the village in Jombang, East Java from the perspective of Whorf’s hypothesis stating that individual’s frst language influence his idea and thought on the reality. In addition, there is also correlation between language and culture both subordinatively and coordinatively. This article aims at describing Whorf’s hypothesis on how language, culture, and though give influence on the naming of villages in Kabuh, Jombang, East Java. The fnding shows that the villages are named after the local name of plants and flowers such as Drenges, Tales, Jati Raja, Kedung Jati, Randu Alas, Kedung Pandan. This fnding affrms that the way they name their villages is influenced by they perceive their surrounding environment.

Abstract

One of the genres of literature which becomes the trending topic in Indonesia is Chicklit or Teenlit. It reveals about young women and their life in many aspects. Mostly the arise of the new writers supported by the media, both electronic or printed, which become the tool to make them famous. Media’s power has taken a part to create their existence, mostly they are young generations in Indonesia; they also contribute the growth of the creative industry. They just became the new public figures like actress or actors who dominate the news in media. This paper is intended to analyze the signifcant role of media in creating the young new writers in Indonesia, especially one outstanding name, Debbie Widjaja. She has written four novels categorized as Teenlit. The qualitative method, the media, and society’s theory will be used to analyze this research. The results of this study showed the media’s role give the important part in creating the new public fgures in Indonesia. The media has a strong power to embody someone’s dream to be true in a good and potential way. Media construct people’s life from zero to be hero. By having this profession, as a young, fresh, and prospective writer, she has inspired many teenagers in Indonesia. Since there isn’t any strict limitations or ideal criteria to produce Teenlit, everybody who fulflled the publisher’s criteria can publish their writings. This becomes the new movement for young generations in Indonesia to have a career in literature world.

Abstract

To produce an acceptable work of translation that is easily understood, an interpreter is required to have a strong word sense in order to determine whether the translation is in accordance with the tastes and expectations of the target reader or not. Likewise in translating Arabic, an interpreter is expected to be the bridge between the author of the source language to the target of language readers. In other words, the translator instead of summarizing a text into a new writing, he/she must be able to be a facilitator of communication transmitter of messages contained in the source language to the target language appropriately. Hence, he/she is able to produce a work of translation which is free from any literal translations and language structure rigid. However, in fact, some Indonesian translations to Arabic –or the vise verse- are still stiff and unfamiliar to the readers of the source language or the readers of the target language.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe the concept of Muhammad Syahrur in reviewing texts of the Qur’an by not using synonyms in the Qur’an, it’s called a-synonymy. synonyms in the Qur’an is often discussed, and the scholars of Arabic linguists was divided into two opinions whether there is the existence of synonyms in the Qur’an or not, most of them agree but others disagree for several reasons. one of them is Muhammad Syahrur. This reseach used analytical descriptions and linguistic approach. The frst data source used his book “ al-Kitabwal al-Qur’an; Qira’ahMuashirah”, From analytical descriptions the writer can elaborate of Syahrur’s linguistic approachby analyzing the meanings contained in that verses by using analysis of syntagmatic and paradigmatic analysis and integrate the concepts that have been obtained to acquire a special meaning in the Qur’an, from that we can take Syahrur’s textual context of the verses being studied.

Abstract

Literacy is a condition where a person has capability to read for knowledge, write to share knowledge, and think critically. Students’ literacy is a never-end issue in the field of English Language Teaching. Studies have been carried out to investigate literacy practices in various level of education including higher education. Among the problems of students’ literacy in higher education are the amount of their reading and writing practices and their motivation to read and write. The current paper is intended to share an experience in strengthening students’ literacy at the English Department of State Islamic Institute (Institut Agama Islam Negeri/IAIN) Tulungagung, East Java. The preliminary investigation of the present study revealed that many students have low motivation to read. In addition, their comprehension was relatively low as represented in their paper works. Under a Classroom Action Research Design, the present study was conducted to propose writing to read program to strengthen the students’ literacy. In such program, the students were required to write a reflective essay based on the selected topics that they had to read prior to classes. The findings showed that writing reflective essay helped students strengthen their literacy as well as improve their motivation to read and to write because the reading and writing activities were done in a more relax and supportive environment that was at home.

Abstract

Vocabulary plays pivotal role in foreign language learning. However, vocabulary teaching and vocabulary learning in TEFL seems to be neglected. The study was aimed to investigate how vocabulary teaching and learning are perceived by teacher and students, strategies to teach and learn the vocabulary, and also influences of students’ vocabulary learning strategy on their vocabulary mastery. Accordingly, a mix method design was employed to one English teacher and 30 junior high school students to reveal the issues being investigated. The findings showed that both teacher and students have positive response on vocabulary teaching and learning. Concerning strategies, it was found that teacher mostly employed Fully-contextual strategy, meanwhile Determination and Metacognitive strategy were found as the most favored VLS chosen by students. The study also confirmed that there is a significant relationship between students’ vocabulary learning strategy and their vocabulary mastery (r-value Discovery = .023 and r-value Consolidating = .000, p<.05). It is recommended for EFL teachers to give a bigger portion to vocabulary in the EFL teaching and to teach vocabulary using the combination of fully-contextual and de-contextual strategy. It is also suggested to introduce students to various kinds of vocabulary learning strategies.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji tentang satuan ekspresi kebahasaan yang terdapat pada kemasan botol AQUA berukuran 600 ml berdasarkan ranah semantik. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bentuk, makna dan fungsi bahasa dalam kemasan botol AQUA. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan adanya bentuk-bentuk satuan ekspresi kebahasaan pada kemasan botol AQUA. Bentuk-bentuk ekspresi kebahasaan tersebut dianalisis maknanya dengan menggunakan studi semantik. Penelitian ini tidak hanya mengkaji makna berdasarkan bentuk, tetapi juga makna leksikal dan gramatikal. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga menjelaskan fungsi bahasa yang terdapat pada kemasan botol AQUA. Satuan ekspresi kebahasaan yang terdapat pada kemasan botol AQUA menunjukkan adanya istilah baru dalam ranah bahasa dan makna. Bentuk dan makna dari satuan ekspresi kebahasaan tersebut disesuaikan dengan penggunaan bahasa anak muda zaman sekarang yang memiliki relevansi dengan peristiwa gagal fokus akibat kekurangan air mineral.

Abstract

Penelitian dialek bahasa Jawa ini bertujuan untuk mengetetahui kondisi kebahasaan masyarakat di Pemalang, Jawa Tengah. Penelitian ini melalui proses pengamatan, pendiskripsian, pembagian wilayah, dan penentuan status kebahasaan. Metode dalam penelitian ini adalah deskripsi kualitatif dan menggunakan sumber data cakap muka, lanjut rekam, dan lanjut catat. Penelitian  ini menggunakan 200 kata Swadesh dan terdapat 37 perbedaan leksikon dari dua wilayah tersebut.

Abstract

Language learning belief and language learning strategies are two essential predictors that have significant effect toward students’ language proficiency. Learners’ belief is dealing with what comes from inside the learners in learning the language, such as foreign language aptitude; difficulty of language learning; nature of language learning; learning and communication strategies; and motivation. Meanwhile, language learning strategies are learners’ plan in achieving certain goals or mastering the target language. A preliminary research was conducted in order to find what strategy mostly used by the learners. It turned out that the strategy mostly used by them was metacognitive strategies. Thus, this study aims to investigate about the correlation between metacognitive strategies and certain belief’ variables in students’ language learning which are foreign language aptitude and motivation. Moreover, twenty postgraduate students of English education department participated in this study. This study used correlational research, in which the BALLI (Beliefs about Language Learning Inventory) and SILL (Strategies Inventory for Language Learners) questionnaires were adopted as the instruments in collecting the data. The findings of this study indicated that there is negative linear correlation between metacognitive strategy and foreign language aptitude (rXY = -0,049) while there is significant positive linear correlation between metacognitive and motivation (rXY =+0,79) in students’ language learning. Furthermore, this study also provide some recommendations, which is it is expected that there will be more researches use studies using different respondents with various contexts. Secondly, the further research will use both of quantitative and qualitative data relating to this issue in order to make a more accurate data.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan mengkaji klausa kompleks jenis proyeksi menggunakan pendekatan Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). Penelitian ini bertujuan mencari karakteristik sistem proyeksi cerita-cerita rakyat Indonesia melalui sistem level, mode dan fungsi proyeksi yang digunakan. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif kualitatif dengan sumber data berupa seluruh klausa kompleks proyeksi dari 13 cerita rakyat Indonesia dalam empat penerbit berbeda (Little Serambi, Pustaka Pelajar, BKPBM dan Bintang Indonesia). Pada sistem level proyeksi, cerita rakyat Indonesia cenderung direalisasikan secara verbal (lokusi) daripada mental (ide). Berikutnya, dari sistem mode proyeksi didapatkan bahwa jenis parataktik (kutipan) lebih banyak daripada hipotaktik (laporan). Keseluruhan fungsi proyeksi baik berupa proposisi (pernyataan dan pertanyaan) dan proposal (tawaran dan perintah) terdapat dalam penelitian ini. Sebagai simpulan, klausa kompleks proyeksi cerita rakyat nusantara di Indonesia cenderung ditulis dalam bentuk kutipan dengan menggunakan kata kerja verbal (lokusi) pada klausa pemroyeksinya dan memiliki fungsi proyeksi tertentu pada klausa terproyeksinya.
