Abstract

People agree that reading is essential skill to get any knowledge in order to get the success of life either academically or socially. Reading needs to be embedded and nurtured because it is not a born skill. Still, the fact shows that EFL students in Indonesian context have not established good habits in reading English, as also experienced by EFL students in IAIN Tulungagung who are also categorized as reluctant readers due to their lack of vocabulary knowledge and number. Many studies on Extensive Reading (ER) indicate its positive impact on nurturing good habits of EFL reading in English. Accordingly implementing Extensive Reading Program to help them build love of reading is necessary. This article is then intended to dig up their responses on the implementation of ER program to the establishment of their love of reading. This research objective was achieved by distributing Reading Log during implementing Guided Extensive Reading Program (GERPro), distributing Questionnaire, and conducting interview to those involved in this ER program. The result of this research reveals that the EFL students joining this ER program claim that for those who do not establish good habits in reading English, ER proved to be able to embed their awareness of love of reading in English, and for those who already built reading love in their mother tongue-Indonesian language, their reading love in both Indonesian language and English gets increased. In addition, this GERPro contributes to the establishment of EFL students’ love of online reading. In short, this research result can be pedagogically implemented by EFL teachers who would like to help their students nurturing good reading habits in English. However, for those who are moody, this GERPro does not work well. Consequently, the next researcher needs to conduct a research on how to work with moody EFL students so that their reading habits can be well established.

Abstract

English for specific academic purposes (ESAP) has grown rapidly in line with the learners’ needs of language especially in communication skills academically. ESAP appears to rebut conventional teaching with merely emphasizing on the language structures instead of the content. In fact, what the learners learn in the classroom should meet their needs in the future professional job. Researching ESAP, the developer attempts to develop instructional materials for Islamic education students intended to troubleshoot the communication problem for undergraduate students in State Islamic Institute of Kediri or IAIN Kediri. This study is aimed to develop ESAP instructional materials with the principles of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) for students of Islamic education of IAIN Kediri. This research and development is carried out in a population of 394 students being in the second semester at IAIN Kediri. A cluster random sampling is chosen as sample. There are 40 students involved in the research out of the 6 classes in the phase of obtaining information, need analysis and try out. The result of need analysis becomes the basis of how the developer composes the instructional materials with CTL principles. All the contents of the materials refer to Islamic education package into 10 units for one semester. The developer needs to ask for judgment of the materials to attain the validity of the materials involving three experts in ESAP course design, Islamic Education teacher training and expert of designing the lay out. After the tryout, the necessary revisions is made, the materials are then validated. It can be said that through the entire steps of research and development, the materials are trustworthy and appropriate to apply at Tarbiyah Faculty at IAIN Kediri.

Abstract

A teacher must be creative in sorting and selecting and can develop standards in shaping the competence of learners. While the competencies that must be possessed by educators include pedagogic, professional, social and personality. These four competencies are very important in supporting the learning process because they are interrelated with each other. This is a separate obstacle for educators / homeroom teachers when teaching Indonesian language subjects at the MI / SD level which are still monotonous in the learning process. Teachers who have creative, professional, and fun nature are students' expectations and these three traits are usually owned by intuiting type educators. The intuitive type is a personality dominated by the right brain. Usually these types of people have advantages, which are creative and like improvising. The development of creative thinking skills and improvisation in concepts as well as the use of appropriate methods, strategies and media can be used as a foundation for MI / SD Indonesian teachers in creating conducive learning according to learning objectives.
