Abstract

Indonesian studies for foreign speakers is still a new feld. Verbal behavior between lecturers and foreign students in this study approached with sosiopragmatik theory. The data collection is done by: participatory observation; structured interviews; and in-depth interviews. In the data collection tools used in audio recorder, a camera, and stationery. Analyzed using qualitative analysis with the methods of analysis: descriptive and categorical, then, theoretically interpret this categorization. In this study found six languages, beside Indonesian langiage used in learning interactions: English, French, Arabic, Chinese, Myanmar, and Java. English is used to help better understand Indonesian foreign students (disclosure purposes). French is used for setting the example. Arabic and Myanmar used to frequently asked questions concept. Chinese used to explain one of the vibrant Chinese culture in Indonesia. Java language is used to explain the meaning of the word / name from the Javanese and to express emotions. In quantitative terms, the use of the English language is more prominent than the use of another language. It is mainly found in the verbal behavior Lecturer and Lecturer Two Three.

Abstract

The LKS (Lembar Kerja Siswa) usage has been criticized by educational experts in the latest decade, including in Indonesia.Publishing permendikbud no 8 tahun 2016 that administered both textbook and non-textbook used in Indonesian schools becomes government respond to this issue. This present article tries to fnd facts that contradict to those rules by reviewing 8 English LKS for Elementary Students. Moreover, some theoretical controversies also fnd in those LKS such as grammatical errors, ignoring young learners’ characteristics, and less of enjoyable activities for young learners. So, this review results are supported to government decision in banning LKS usage in Indonesia.

Abstract

The primary condition for successful in second or foreign language learning is providing an adequate environment. It is as a medium of increasing the students’ language exposure in order to be able to success in acquiring second or foreign language profciency. This study was designed to propose the adequate English language input that can decrease the students’ anxiety in reading comprehension performance. Of the four skills, somehow reading can be regarded as especially important because reading is assumed to be the central means for learning new information. Some students, however, still encounter many problems in reading. It is because of their anxiety when they are reading. Providing and creating an interesting-contextual reading material and gratifed teachers can make out this problem which occurs mostly in Indonesian’s classrooms. It revealed that the younger learners of English there do not received adequate amount of the target language input in their learning of English. Hence, it suggested the adoption of extensive reading programs as the most effective means in the creation of an input-rich environment in EFL learning contexts. Besides they also give suggestion to book writers and publisher to provide myriad books that appropriate and readable for their students.

Abstract

Penelitian mengenai penggunaan disfemia ini bertujuan untuk 1) mendeskripsikan bentuk-bentuk disfemia yang digunakan pada judul berita berbahasa Indonesia di TV One dan berbahasa Jawa di Jogja TV, 2) mendeskripsikan nilai rasa dalam disfemia, 3) mendeskripsikan topik-topik berita yang memunculkan disfemia, dan 4) karakteristik kebahasaannya. Penelitian ini merupakan sebuah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik catat (Mastoyo, 2007:44-46) dan teknik sampling berdasarkan tujuan (purposive sampling). Teknik ini akan mencatat hasil penyimakan semua data, yaitu juduljudul berita yang memiliki potensi disfemia pada berita nasional di TV One dan berita Pawartos Ngayogyakarta di Jogja TV. Analisis data dilakukan dengan teknik triangulasi (Elliott, 1991:82) melalui tiga perspektif. Data penelitian ini disajikan dengan metode formal dan informal. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa 1) Penggunaan disfemia hanya berada pada tataran kata saja, 2) nilai rasa pada judul berita di TV One dapat diklasifkasikan menjadi 5 jenis, sedangkan nilai rasa pada judul berita di Jogja TV dapat diklasifkasikan menjadi 2 jenis saja, 3) disfemia di TV One muncul dalam 5 topik berita, sedangkan dalam berita di Jogja TV ditemukan pada 3 macam topik, 4) penggunaan disfemia pada berita di TV One lebih banyak, lebih ditonjolkan, dan “menyerang” langsung obyek yang diberitakannya, sedangkan bentuk disfemia pada berita di Jogja TV tidak.

Abstract

Patriarchy system occurs in the era of Victoria and many women experience the effects of this system. The aims of the study is to describe the patriarchy system presented in the novel The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte. This research was conducted with descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from Anne Bronte’s novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall published by Anne Bronte in 1848. Data were collected from intensive reading of the novel and library research for resources related to patriarchy system. The result of study indicated that the patriarchy system which found in the novel ‘The Tenant of Wildfell Hall’ (1848) touch some basic institution namely economic institution, education, religion, family, state institution and cultural values. This novel told us about the condition of society in the Victorian era especially related to the patriarchy system occurred in that era.

Abstract

Then paper proposes the discussion of the signifcant role of language in developing students and the national development. Language and its role in educating people of a nation are often forgotten because they are often taken for granted. We often undermine the contribution of the language that is used to educate our nation. The language that we use to express important ideas, to deliver moral teachings valued highly by the nation, to shape the young generation’s character obviously brings with it things that the type of the language has. Language in use may not ideologically neutral. The discussion is also about the fact that language is used for learning, that is as a tool for understanding. Language is also a tool for interacting with others from which people learn. Another notion proposed is that language is the main tool in instruction especially in the classroom. In the teaching of language, the target language is used as much is possible in the course of the teaching. All parties involved in the education of the nation understand the position of the languages used in the teaching of the young generation including the foreign languages needed to develop the nation.

Abstract

In daily use of language, speakers need to use certain linguistic units to convey messages to the interlocutors. To assert non-factual condition, there are modality markers as parts of language elements. English grammar marks the modality concept by means of modal verbs, adverbs, adjective, conditional sentence, and the like. Regarding modal verbs, one of them is quasi-modal. This paper then examines quasi-modals in English. However, talking about English cannot be separated from its regional varieties. This research thus aims to describe the differences of quasi-modals in British English and American English. To complete the research, it attempts to reveal the factors triggering the differences.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the values ​​Gurindam Twelfth contained in Bujang Sri Ladang fairy tale. This study uses an objective approach, the approach that focuses only on work study itself (fairy tale Bujang Sri Ladang). The method used is descriptive method, which describe the values ​​Gurindam Twelfth contained in Bujang Sri Ladang fairy tale. Data collected by interview, the interviewing community leaders in the city of Tanjungpinang fairytale owner, to obtain data related to the fairy tale Bujang Sri Ladang. Data analysis technique conducted by: (1) describe the synopsis legend Ship Island, (2) describe the mandate of the fabled Bujang Sri Ladang, (3) describe the values ​​Gurindam Twelfth contained in a fairy tale Bujang Sri Ladang, and (4) interprets the value -value Gurindam Twelfth contained in Bujang Sri Ladang fairy tale. The results obtained: Bujang Sri Ladang fairytale field contains: Islamic values, the value of faith, social values, manners and character, introspective, benefits, and ethical values. It is as the result of analyzes performed. Those values ​​are the essential values ​​and become a lifeline of society, especially the Malay community Tanjungpinang city

Abstract

In Indonesian context, writing is considered as painful activity indicating that oral culture is much better than writing one. The students’ works are sufficiently kept in the libraries, although to publish those is much more worthy. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the students’ writing skills through a meaningful way namely writing journal article. This review article is therefore intended to discuss ways of improving students’ writing skills through writing journal article. The result of consulting different existing related literature can be concluded that the ability of writing can be variously defined based on the pedagogical objectives and approach. Meanwhile, the skill of writing journal article is classified as one of the writing skills derived from Process/Cognitive approach. Amongst the underlying ways to publish the students’ manuscripts is by taking a look at the structure of a journal article, the writing guide and the writing style of a journal publication to which the manuscript is intended to publish. By implementing the above mentioned tips of writing a journal article, the EFL students will not only improve their writing skills but make their works much worthy as well. In a nutshell, in addition to publish the students’ works, to write journal article is essential to improve their writing skills.

Abstract

For foreign language learners, especially in university, academic writing is essential. Students are required to analyse, compare, and inform through academic writing. Moreover, when they reach the end of their study, they should write a thesis as part of a requirement to graduate. Thus, thesis writing is a major challenge for students. Halliday and Hassan as cited in Hinkel (2001) emphasise that academic writing should achieve cohesiveness to make it well-constructed and understandable. Transition signal is one of prominent cohesive devices that should be taken into account in academic writing. This study aims to identify students’ problems and tendency in using transition signals in academic writing. The data are gained from university students’ academic writing product which is built in a form of corpus. The data are then analysed by using corpus software (ant conc.3.2.4). Its implication on English Language Teaching (ELT) concerning the teaching of transition signals will also be addressed
