Abstract

Mathematical self-efficacy and the snowball-throwing learning model play a role in student learning success. Mathematical self-efficacy is a student's perception of mathematical abilities. The study aimed to analyze students' critical thinking skills based on mathematical self-efficacy through the application of the snowball-throwing learning model to material composition functions. The research method uses a qualitative with the type of case study research. The number of respondents consisted of three students representing high, medium, and low mathematical self-efficacy categories. The research instrument used tests of critical thinking skills, questionnaires, and interviews. The data analysis technique uses three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion the data. The results of the study were obtained as follows: 1) Students who have high mathematical self-efficacy have high critical thinking skills with all indicators of critical thinking skills fulfilled, 2) Students who have moderate mathematical self-efficacy have critical thinking skills with only one indicator fulfilled, and 3) Students who have low mathematical self-efficacy do not have all indicators of critical thinking skills. Learning the composition function using the snowball-throwing learning model is appropriate when used for students who have a high level of mathematical self-efficacy to train students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and validate a multidimensional instrument that will measure the interest in mathematics among Indonesian adolescents (aged 12-21 years). The developed instrument must meet psychometric standards in terms of content, construct, and concurrent validity. This instrument is called the “Skala Minat Matematika Remaja” (SMMR). The existence of SMMR is important because: (1) it is based on a validated structure and content of interest in the literature, (2) it accommodates the measurement of interest during adolescence, and (3) it specifically measures mathematics interest, which will be useful in the mathematics learning process. Three sample groups were taken from secondary school to university level to complete the SMMR instrument. A quantitative approach was used to test three types of validity. Construct validity was tested using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) resulted in a 20-item SMMR with four dimensions (engagement, knowledge, emotions, and value) that explained 58% of the total variance. This indicates that the selected items can effectively explain the four dimensions of interest. Furthermore, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on the third sample group confirmed that SMMR is suitable for application among different groups of adolescents. SMMR scores showed a significant negative relationship between interest and age. This relationship indicates that SMMR has good concurrent validity.

Abstract

Problem-solving ability is a primary skill students should acquire in learning mathematics and is often connected to Adversity Quotient (AQ). This qualitative descriptive study describes the ability to solve PLSV problems regarding AQ (climbers, campers, and quitters) in 7th-grade students of SMP Negeri 21 Surabaya. Data were collected through questionnaires, tests, and interviews using instruments such as the AQ questionnaire sheet, Word Problem Solving Test (TPWP), questionnaires, and interview guidelines. The problem-solving ability in this study refers to the four stages of Polya's problem-solving ability including understanding the problem, planning, implementing, and evaluating. The results of this study showed that (1) the climbers subject was able to accomplish all of Polya's stages, (2) the campers subject, was able to accomplish three stages of Polya's problem solving, which were able to understand the problem, plan the problem solving, and carry out the problem-solving. Whereas, (3) the quitters subject, was unable to complete Polya's problem-solving stages as it showed that the subject was poorly understanding the problem, planning to solve the problem, implementing the solution plan, and incapable of looking back at problems that had been solved.

Abstract

Algebraic thinking is important for developing students' mathematical generalization abilities, and identifying patterns, shapes, and symbols. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach that aims to describe the profile of students' algebraic thinking in solving modeling problems. The subjects of this study were 158 fifth-grade students in two private schools in Surakarta, Central Java. The data collection instrument used was six test questions related to the modeling component adopted from Ralston. Prior to use, the instrument was validated by 3 elementary school mathematics learning experts and tested on 10 students who were not the subject of the study. Based on the test results, there were 12 students who scored in the high category. This study focuses on analyzing the algebraic thinking profile of students with high categories. The results showed that high-category subjects were able to demonstrate understanding related to modeling indicators in algebraic thinking, namely understanding the meaning of the equal sign (=) as an equivalence relationship, using variables to solve problems in the form of equations, and understanding the relationships between arithmetic operations. However, a small number of subjects still experience calculation errors and understanding errors in algebraic operations. Hence, it can be concluded that subjects with high categories are able to demonstrate algebraic thinking skills in the modeling component

Abstract

Students' low reading interest greatly affects learning outcomes in Vector Analysis class. This is due to the rare interaction between students and learning resources in class. To increase student activity in reading and understanding the concept of vector analysis material, an e-LKM product is needed. This study aims to develop Student Worksheets (LKM) in electronic form that is integrated with numeracy literacy which can be used for learning vector analysis courses by knowing the validity and practicality of procedures so that the use of these e-LKM can improve students' critical thinking. This development research uses the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). Furthermore, the evaluation stage is carried out at each stage to improve the e-LKM that is made. The subjects were 21 students in semester VI of class C Mathematics Education FKIP Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. The research data was obtained by collecting questionnaires from material experts, media, and students' responses to the practicality of the media being developed. From the results of the questionnaires distributed, the average questionnaire from the two material experts and media experts showed excellent criteria with a mean score of 4.611 and 4.47 respectively. The results of student responses to product use show excellent criteria with a mean score of 4.27. Based on these results, the e-LKM that is used is proven to be valid and practical.
