Abstract

This study discusses the ability to read and write. The study aims to answer some problems, namely: 1) Knowing students’ reading comprehension, 2) Knowing students’ writing skill, and 3) To obtain whether there is a significant relationship between students' reading comprehension and writing skills or not. This research uses Mix method. The population is 183 students of MTs. Negeri 5 Pandeglang. The researcher took 30 students as sample. To test the research hypothesis, the researcher collected data analysis using inferential statistical techniques using Product Moment formula. The finding of research hypothesis shows that: 1) The level of students’ comprehension in reading was very low. This could be seen from the analysis that shows the mean 59.7. 2) The level of students’ writing skill was in the medium category. This could be seen from the analysis, showing the mean 68. 3) There is a significant positive relationship between reading ability and writing ability. Based on the quantitative analysis, the results of the research show that the observation value r is 0.963 above the 5% rejection limit of 0.361 and the 1% rejection limit of 0.461, in other words 0.963 > 0.463 at the 5% level and 0.361 > 0.963 at the 1% level. Thus the result is stated significant and the proposed hypothesis is accepted.

This research aims to find out the influence of using chain story activity on procedural text towards students’ speaking skill. The researcher employs quantitative research with the method of experiment. She uses quasi experimental design in the type of non-equivalent control group to get the sample. The population are 157 students of the second grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Mathla’ul Anwar Pusat Menes. The samples are 26 students of the XI IPA 2 as the experimental class which is treated by using chain story activity and 24 students of XI IPA Tahfidz as the control class which is treated without using chain story activity. The data is collected by using oral test. The test are divided into two, pre-test and post-test. After the process of collecting the data finished, the researcher analizes them by using statistical computation. Abstract

In learning English for specific purpose, students sometimes do not get appropriate materials with their needs. ESP materials are more specific than general English, so students should receive materials related to their background of field. This research aimed at finding out the relevance between an ESP syllabus and the students’ needs. This research used qualitative method that deals with a single or small-case studied in detail. The population was taken from the 1st semester students of Mechanical Engineering Department at University of Singaperbangsa Karawang. Random sampling was 24 students that was taken from two classes out of 120 students. The data was taken by distributing questionnaire to students and analyzing the syllabus designed by teacher. The result of this research shows that most students who are working in companies need to learn speaking skill as the most important skill as well as grammar. In addition, the ESP syllabus provided by teacher is quite relevant to the students’ needs. Therefore, it is suggested that teacher conducts a need analysis to students before designing syllabus, so it can be relevant with the students’ needs.

Abstract

This research is aimed as follows: to get empirical data and analyze the impacts of reading habit and language attitudes towards students’ reading comprehension at private Senior High School in Pandeglang, Banten Province. This research is done by statistics, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, to test the normality, and Anova Table. The research was held at Private Senior High School in Pandeglang. Data was collected by giving instruments for reading habit (questionnaire/16 items), language attitude (questionnaire/16 items) to eleven grade students at Madrsasah Aliyah Mathla’ul Anwar, MAN 1 Pandeglang, and SMA Mathla’ul Anwar Menes. Due to the result, it can be inferred that there is an impact of reading habit towards students’ reading comprehension (Sig.=0.000 and t_test=14.648; while t_(table=) 1.669). There is an impact of language attitude towards students’ reading comprehension (Sig.=0.040 and t_test=0.846; while t_(table=) 1.669). There are impacts of reading habit and language attitudes toward students’ reading comprehension, the score of Sig. = 0.000 < 0.05 and F_test =160.024; while F_table=3.148, so Ho is rejected, it means that the regression coefficient is significant.

Abstract

This research paper aims to investigate the effect of using task based methodin improving students listening skill at the seventh grade students of MTs Al-Ihya Kaduronyok. The research paper employs the quantitative research design with the characteristic of an experimental study. It uses the same learning material both in experimental and control class. The data are obtained from 6 sessions of classroom activity. The researcher uses quantitative as the method of her research because the research designed as ‘the scientific method’ which can be defined as a test under controlled conditions that is made to demonstrate a known truth or examine the validity of a hypothesis. The findings reveal that using task based method is helpful and easy to conduct. In addition, this method can improve students’ listening skill. In relation to the responses on the method, it is found that the students respond the method positively. Based on the findings of this research, it can be shown through computing t-test the researcher got t-count (14.38) is higher than t-table (1.671). It means, there is significant effect of using task based method in teaching listening.

There were two classes taken as sample, VIII C as experimental class with 29 students, and VIII B as control class with 29 students too. This research paper employs the quantitave research design with characteristics of experimental research. The data collection method of this research used a test involving pre-test and post-test. After giving pre-test and post-test, the researcher found that the post-test score of experimental class was higher than the post-test score of control class, which were 2024 > 1731. It means that students’writing score was increase after treating by think, talk, and write strategy. Through calculating the t-test, the researcher also found that t-count was higher than t-table, which were 4.77 > 2.005. It means that there is significant influence of applying think, talk, and write strategy in teaching writing. The findings of this research show that it is significant for the teachers to choose the appropriate stategy for improving students’ writing mastery, particularly think, talk, and write strategy as mentioned above.
