Abstract

The traditional method of teaching and learning writing has been seen as boring. The students only write their writing assignment on their paper and it could only be read by their lecturer. Whereas in this modern era social media platforms become an important part in human daily lives, social media platforms are also used for educational purposes. One of the popular social media platforms is Instagram. This research aims to find how students' responses regarding their affective engagement toward the use of Instagram on the descriptive writing assignment. Qualitative methods and narrative inquiry were used to conduct this research. The participants of this research were 6 English Education Department students in the 8th semester at the University of Singaperbangsa Karawang. Simple random sampling was used in selecting the participants. In this research, three data collection techniques were used to collect the data: interview, students' reflective journal, and photovoice. There are three results of this research. The first is utilizing Instagram on a descriptive writing assignment makes students feel happy, enjoyable, and comfortable. The second is Instagram increases their writing interest. And the third is Instagram makes students feel engaged in the writing activity.Keywords: Affective Engagement, Instagram, Writing Descriptive Text Assignment

Abstract

In learning English for specific purpose, students sometimes do not get appropriate materials with their needs. ESP materials are more specific than general English, so students should receive materials related to their background of field. This research aimed at finding out the relevance between an ESP syllabus and the students’ needs. This research used qualitative method that deals with a single or small-case studied in detail. The population was taken from the 1st semester students of Mechanical Engineering Department at University of Singaperbangsa Karawang. Random sampling was 24 students that was taken from two classes out of 120 students. The data was taken by distributing questionnaire to students and analyzing the syllabus designed by teacher. The result of this research shows that most students who are working in companies need to learn speaking skill as the most important skill as well as grammar. In addition, the ESP syllabus provided by teacher is quite relevant to the students’ needs. Therefore, it is suggested that teacher conducts a need analysis to students before designing syllabus, so it can be relevant with the students’ needs.

Abstract

In this globalization era, teaching English has to also involve intercultural aspects in order that students can develop their awareness towards the differences of the culture of the target language. The intercultural teaching and learning English can be corporated with reading skill activities as suggested by Usó-Juan & Martínez-Flor (2008). This study was a qualitative study which potrayedreading activities to assist intercultural teaching and learning English. The data were taken with observation of teaching learning in the classroom with 25 students of 2nd semester at a state university in Karawang, West Java. 6 students were also selected to have interview in order to know their response and understanding. Finaly, there were some reading activities, such as critical reading and cultural bump, conducted in the classroom that could quite effectively improve the students’ intercultural awareness. Some students also responded by giving positive statements about reading skill activities so their intercultural understanding could improve. However, implementing these activities were not an easy task because the teacher needs to understand the theoritical concept of intercultural language learning.

Abstract

This study aims to find out how the intercultural English language learning can foster values of tolerance in elementary school students, as well as how it is implemented by teacher in the classroom. This research used a case study research design and the subjects in this study were a teacher and 20 6th grade students at an elementary school in Karawang. Data collection techniques were carried out by observation in 4 class meetings to observe the learning activities and interview with a teacher and 6 students. From the observations, this study showed that intercultural English language learning was moderately relevant to apply to elementary students. The teacher used simple, fun and stimulating activities and material such as songs, short stories and games in English, both from native culture (Indonesian) and target culture (English). Students could learn the use of English while recognizing cultural differences between native and target culture and languages. On the other hand, from the interview, students stated that they were very pleased with the method applied. They expressed their pleasure because they could get to know other cultures and most importantly they accept cultural differences as an amazement. Therefore, it can be concluded that students at a young age are fair enough to be introduced intercultural learning so they can think critically and have a tolerant attitude from an early age. However, the teaching method and material should be adapted to their age and thinking capacity.

Abstract

Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini dilakukan untuk sosialisai akan pentingnya nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter di SMP As-Syarifiyah Purwasari Kabupaten Karawang. Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini juga merupakan perwujudan dari salah satu dharma perguruan tinggi, yakni pengabdian kepada masyarakat, yang bersifat lintas disiplin (interdisipliner) dan merupakan komponen keilmuan, teknologi dan seni secara aplikatif guna membantu kehidupan masyarakat. Dengan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat diharapkan dapat membantu masyarakat khususnya para guru di SMP Asy-Syarifiyah Purwasari Kab.Karawang dalam menghadapi kesulitan-kesulitan yang dihadapi baik di sekolah dalam proses belajar mengajar atau di luar sekolah. Selain itu para siswa juga dapat menerepkan nilai-nilai Pendidikan karakter baik di sekolah maupun dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, sehingga kegiatan ini tidak hanya seremonial semata tetapi benar-benar memberikan manfaat untuk masyarakat. Melalui Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini pula dapat membantu merealisasikan program-program pemerintah dalam rangka melaksanakan pemerataan pembangunan di pedesaan.

Abstract

Task activity is part of learning to enhance the improvement students’ skill, especially integration skills of listening and speaking. However, many researchers have identified task activity and integration skill separately. This descriptive research focuses on identifying three aspects of need analysis such as Target Situation Analysis (TSA), Present Situation Analysis (PSA), and Learning Situation Analysis (LSA). The aim of this research is to find out appropriate task activity and materials based on students’ experiences learning in listening and speaking integrated skills. Data collection used interview from four tourism students, and analyzed English and major specific syllabus.  The result of this study indicates that English lesson should adapt materials in major specific lesson, because materials affected to find suitable listening and speaking integrated task activity. The underlined result of this research is task activity can increase with new strategy and instruction which consider to previous learning, students’ lack, and students’ necessities. Implication need analysis showed listening and speaking integrated task activity is important to apply in English vocational school to achieve learners’ target skill.

Abstract

This study examines the types of requesting strategies that occur in the English textbook and investigate the context of the dialogues in the textbook. This research employed qualitative content analysis approach. The data were utterances, in the form of sentences, clauses or words that appears in the textbook, while the contexts of the data were the dialogues. Data were obtained through document analysis consisted of nine request strategies. The data were analyzed by determining the request strategies based on Trosborg‘s theory (1995), and context of situation theory by Holmes (2001). The result shows that there are eight strategies of requesting found within the textbook. The types that appears most frequently within the textbook is questioning ability/willingness and the slightest showing up is mild hints and suggestory formulae. A few sorts are also found such as, imperatives, demands/needs, wish, permissions, and strong hints. The data showed, understanding speech acts also means understanding how language is used and practiced or, in other words understanding the context. Thus, misunderstanding and misinterpretation can be minimized.Keywords: Requesting, Speech Act, Context of Situation, Textbook

Abstract

This research at disentangling kinds of polite strategies used by an English teacher in the EFL classroom. This research was based on qualitative approach. The research involved an English teacher at a vocational school in Karawang. The data collection were carried out through the observation of an English teacher in two classroom meetings and were video-recorded. The results showed that the types of polite strategies used by an English teacher included four types of politeness strategies, i.e. positive politeness, negative politeness, bald on-record and off record. As a result, it can be concluded that attention should be given to the language used by the students. This will help the students in developing their English communicative skills as to how to use language relevant to the context.

Abstract

Covid-19 has been labeled a pandemic by the World Health Organization as a current hazard to humanity. This epidemic has successfully caused the global shutdown of a variety of activities in this world, including educational activities. Resulting in massive crisis-response migration of institutions to online learning as the educational platform was discussed. The present interview study reports on two college students' challenges of online learning through the Zoom Application. Semi-structured interviewing was designed to elucidate the students’ voices of online learning challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data garnered from online interviewing were transcribed and interpreted using thematic content analysis.

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic brings about changing teaching and learning. It insists teachers and students to adapt situation in the context of vocabulary learning. Therefore, this research was conducted to find out the secondary students’ perception and experiences on Duolingo-mediated general vocabulary learning during Covid-19 Pandemic. The participants of this research were 3 secondary students in one of junior high school in Karawang who have low,medium and high vocabulary and have been being taught using Duolingo for learning general vocabulary by their teacher. This study employed narrative inquiry design and in gaining the data, the researcher used semi-structured interview and reflective journals. The data then will be coded, read multiple times, and the themes were determined and generated. The findings indicated that Duolingo was perceived positively by secondary students in learning general vocabulary. It can be seen from their perception about its effectiveness. Duolingo was effective media and secondary students were motivated to continue learning general vocabulary by using it. However, secondary students who learn general vocabulay using Duolingo media faced the challenges that they could not use it if the internet connection was bad and it also has lack of grammatical rules explanation.Thus, there should be a way to incorporate it with vocabulary.
