Abstract

This research aims to disclose the symbolic capital of Halimi Zuhdy as an Arabic Poet of Indonesian. Halimi's legitimacy cannot be separated from the symbolic, social and cultural capital he possesses. This research scrutinizes the strategy and legitimacy of Halimi as an Arab Poet from Indonesia. To describe this problem, the researcher uses the literary sociology approach of Pierre Bourdieu, especially concerning the arena of literary production and legitimacy in gaining symbolic capital. Halimi has practical social capital as he was educated at an Islamic boarding school. At the same time, institutionally, Halimi is a caregiver for the Darunnun Islamic boarding school. In Halimi's cultural capital, he has written several Arabic literary works and he has achieved a position as Chair of the Arabic Language and Literature study program and a new position of Deputy Dean the Faculty of Humanities UIN Malang. Meanwhile, in terms of symbolic capital, Halimi was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature from Munir Mazid for his achievements. The accumulation of capital built up in the literary arena has made Halimi achieve the position of an Indonesian Arab Poet. The dialectic of knowledge built by Halimi has also accumulated his fame.

Abstract

This study aims to examine partitions and political actions in A.A. Navis’s short story “Robohnya Surau Kami” using Jacques Rancière’s concept of the distribution of the sensible theory. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive research. It is important to recognize the awareness of the subject as part of the social class. This social class becomes the agent for various imaginary subjects constructed through discourse. The story indicates that there are characters who have been partitioned through the practice of polis and thus making them experience inequalities and restrictions. To escape from these, they need to carry out a political action (disensus; declassification; migration). The results showed that the Grandfather as protagonist was partitioned in the social structure based on his identity as a clergyman. This identity was used as a legitimizing sensibility to partition Grandfather as a “the part that has no part”. The partition that happened to him fits the Archipolitic and Parapolitic concepts. Meanwhile, the dissensus action aimed at declassifying was carried out by Ajo Sidi who created an allegory for Grandfather. In this allegory, Ajo presents a figure of God who challenges the partition regime as dissensus and subjectivating the figure of Haji Saleh/Grandfather as declassification. Based on this, Ajo Sidi can be said to be “the political” subject.

Abstract

The present study aims to analyze new word formations in Indonesian related to COVID-19 and identify its function in online newspapers. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach by adapting generative morphological theories as the framework. The research objects are 32 new word formations found in various texts in online newspapers in Indonesia collected between April 2020 to August 2020. The data were analyzed using the top-down technique distribution method. This method uses a determinant in the language element itself, namely the data selection technique based on specific categories in terms of grammarism in accordance with the natural characteristics of the research data. The study shows that the new word formation in modern Indonesian related to COVID-19 can be obtained by coining roots, compounding, abbreviation, and acronym. Those unique word formations are originated primarily from Indonesian and English. The function of its usage is mainly referential (abbreviation and acronym) and expressive (roots and compounding). We create new words to fulfill the designation needs of new issues that appear in society. Furthermore, the development in society, especially in coping with global health issues, has also contributed to the enrichment of Indonesian vocabulary.

Abstract

The presence of literary works translated from foreign languages in Indonesia enriches the literary readership in region (Adi, 2016). In addition to gaining a wider readership, the understanding of the literary text will improve. Readers who may not fully understand the version in the original language have the opportunity to digest the story thoroughly. The comprehensive understanding becomes more important when dealing with foreign literature talking about Indonesia, such as Kevin Kwan's Crazy Rich Asians trilogy. The trilogy was translated into Bahasa as Kaya Tujuh Turunan (2016), Kekasih Kaya Raya (2017), and Masalah Orang Kaya (2018). This article examines how Indonesia is represented in the trilogy what factors influence the construction. The three novels were analyzed using the representation theory proposed by Stuart Hall with the descriptive-qualitative method. There are two representations of Indonesia, as a nation and as a state. Indonesian is represented of as a nation Chinese-Indonesians with their newly acquired wealth who are obsessed with having white skin and foreign husbands, on the one hand, non-Chinese Indonesians who work as manual due to lack of education on the other hand. Meanwhile, Indonesia as a state is represented as a developing rural country with rich and beautiful natural resources, yet are exploited by other countries and stolen by few government officials, resulting in weak economic and military situation.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the imbalance of relations between East and West in Arabic travel literature. The inequality is caused by the representation of the superior (West) and the inferior (East) which is constantly being produced. The novel Uṣfur min al-Syarq by Taufiq al-Hakim as one of Arabic travel literature is considered to offer a different view from other Arabic travel literature by proposing the value of equality between East and West. This research is expected to be able to resolve the problem of inequality in relations between East and West as represented in Arabic travel literature. This research uses another representation strategy from Carl Thompson's travel literary concept which consists of colonial, neo-colonial, and post-colonial strategies. The results of this study found that the representations of the others made by al-Hakim which were dominated by the use of colonial and post-colonial strategies showed that the author occupied two opposing positions. On the one hand, al-Hakim is still trapped in colonial discourse and on the other hand, al-Hakim is not entirely successful in bringing the post-colonial travel agenda to escape from Western hegemony. The equality proposed by al-Hakim regarding the East is inseparable from Western assistance. To realize the equality of the East and the West, al-Hakim used the superiority of the West to face the West in order to defend the East.

Abstract

This research has “Lā Tabki yā Ṣaghīrī” as a material object, an original soundtrack of Abṭalu Dīgital, a very popular movie in s2000. The song lyric is analyzed by Riffaterre’s Semiotics Theory which introduces two levels of reading.  Based on the analysis of this research, the potential hypogram shows that the parents give advices about reaching for dreams to their child who is in despair. The dream has something to do with raindrops philosophy. The models found are juhdun ‘effort’, amal ‘dream’, alwān ‘colours’, dan hayāh ‘life’. The matrix is “advises about human as khalifatullah in the world”. The actual hypogram is human’s missions as khalifatullah based on verses of al-Quran, hadith of the prophet, and interpretations of some mufassir such as Quraish Shihab and al-Buthi. It then is concluded that khalifah is like raindrop. It emits various colour spectrums, shows beautiful rainbow, and spreads-out love. One raindrop collaborates to another and sticks together to become pulse of the world.

Abstract

Every translator seeks to find the equivalence of the source text in terms of meaning and style. In practice, translators often need to change the structure of their translations. This kind of techniques or methods of translation is often called shift. Shift can occur in different levels, which can include a clause, sentence, or paragraph level. By analyzing students’ translation using the perspective of Systemic Functional Linguistics by Halliday, this study finds several shifts in terms of theme-rheme classification and theme constituents. Shifts in theme-rheme classification can be categorized into: a) a change from rheme into theme, b) from theme into rheme, c) addition of textual theme, and d) deletion or omission of textual theme. In terms of theme constituents, shifts were found in four categories, namely a) shifts from a morpheme into a word, b) from a word into a phrase, c) from a phrase into a word, and d) from a clause into a word. These shifts have impacts on the meaning of the target texts as opposed to the source texts, at sentence or paragraph level.

Abstract

The story of “Kutukan Dapur” by Eka Kurniawan presents a colonial setting: Dutch colonialism and postcolonialism in the image of two characters, Diah Ayu and Maharani. Maharani is in patriarchal shackles, which is ingrained in her family life and social structure. Meanwhile, Diah Ayu is in the bonds of Dutch colonialism, which is brought back by the author. Both are in a subaltern position but in different conditions. Based on this description, this research asks two questions which are analyzed using Gayatri Spivak's subaltern theory, (1) what the position of Diah Ayu and Maharani in "Kutukan Dapur" short story, and (2) how the subaltern is constructed through the efforts of the two characters to get out of that position is. The method used is qualitative. The narratives are classified and analyzed to understand the subaltern's position and construction and its resistance efforts. This research indicates that Maharani and Diah Ayu are subalterns of Maharani dominated by patriarchy, while Diah Ayu is dominated by Dutch colonialism. Maharani fought back, but only with an idea or ideas. Unlike Diah Ayu, she is able to fight in a real form. However, as the author, Eka is trapped in a biased construction in addition to gender bias and representation. In subaltern studies, representation is only a tool towards more real domination. The two figures seem to be fighting against the power structure (colonial and patriarchal) but are still trapped in the dominance of the other.

Abstract

This research examines the discrimination traits experienced by three female characters in the Bridgerton series. This research uses the symbolic annihilation concept by Gaye Tuchman and the theory of existentialist feminism by Simone de Beauvoir to describe the discriminatory traits experienced by the three female characters and reveal their resistance efforts to respond to the discrimination. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods to elaborate the findings and the theories. This research finds that women's existence in this series is presented as the party who gets trivialization, omission, and condemnation. Despite being subjected to annihilation traits, the three female characters in this series do not remain silent and accept what has been set by their family and society. Thus, these three female characters take the resistance by staying true to themselves and standing firm in their convictions. The symbolic annihilation they experienced then used as a reference to prove herself that as a woman they can still exist even though being discriminated against by society.
