Abstract

One of the information needed by farmers is information about nutrition ration poultry in accordance with the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). This study aims to determine the value of energy metabolism in commercial chicken rations. Determination of energy metabolism was conducted by Farrel in which chickens were fed like a chicken eating chicken feed itself and previously fasted for 24 hours and still be drinking. The ration of treatment used is feed corn, feed rations BR1 and BR2. Chickens were given time for 2 hours to eat the feed later in the fasting. After fasting rationing and the chicken will issue feces, to prevent the evaporation of nitrogen in the feces spraying by the use of H2SO4 concentration 0,01%. Chicken feces then dried and analyzed by the laboratory using a bomb calorimeter. The data in the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan test. Corn research results show that the energy metabolism in the feed ration obtained BR1 3.048 kcal/kg and BR2 3.237 kcal/kg. The result can be concluded that the value is in compliance with EM EM minimum value required in SNI minimum of 2.900 kcal / kg with a value of EM listed on the label. Keywords:  Energy Metabolism, Commercial feed, Corn

Abstract

In vitro fertilization technology in cows is an effort done to utilize ovary waste from cows slughtered in abbatoir. This study was aimed at assessing the qualiy of embryos resulted from in vitro fertilization by using frozen semen thawed in different temperatures. In order to get qualty semen, standardized thawing method is required. It was expected from this study that an optimum thawing temperature for frozen semen was determined to obtain quality transferable embryos. Three treatments consisting of thawing with water 37°C for 30 second (T1), thawing with water 25°C for 30 second (T2), and thawing with water 10°C for 30 second (T3). Data were subjected to an an anlysis of variance (Anova) and a Duncan test. Results showed that oocytes fertilized with frozen semen thawed at 37°C and 10°C had higher fertilization rate and excellent-grade embryos (P<0.05) than did the ones fertilized with frozen semen thawed at 25°C. However, no different effect of thawing temperatures was found on transferable and degenerated embryos (P>0.05). It was concluded that embryos fertilized with Brahman frozen semen in thawed at 37°C had the highest number of embryos (49.66±2.88) and excellent-grade embryos (22.00±4.35). Key words: Embryo quality, In vitro fertilization, frozen semen thawing, Brahman bull.

Abstract

Bacterial resistance to antibiotic has made the reduction in the use of antibiotic a concern in animal production.  The restriction of antibiotic application in animal production can be achieved if the antimicrobial strategy is available.  Papaya leaf extract has some antibacterial properties that make it is potential to be used as a substitute for commercial antibiotic.  This study was aimed at assessing the efficacy and potential of papaya leaf extract inclusion in drinking water in controlling pathogenic bacteria and improving the production efficiency and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of layer quails.  The study was conducted from 24 August to 20 September 2016 at the poultry farm of Department of Animal Husbandry, Djuanda University, Bogor.  One-hundred layer quails were allocated into 4 treatments and 3 replicates in a completely randomized design.  The treatments consisted of five levels of papaya leaf extract inclusions in drinking water , namely drinking water + commercial antibiotic of 0.5 g/liter water (R1), drinking water + papaya leaf extract of 10 ml/liter water (R2), drinking water + papaya leaf extract of 20 ml/liter water (R3), and drinking water + papaya leaf extract of 30 ml/liter water (R4).  Data were subjected to an analysis of variance and a Duncan test.  Results showed that the inclusion of papaya leaf extract in drinking water gave significant effects on egg mass, egg production efficiency, FCR, egg quality index, and egg shell thickness but not on feed intake, egg weight, and mortality rate.  It was concluded that papaya leaf extract produced by a boiling method could be used as a substitute for synthetic antibiotic.  Key words: Papaya leaf extract, production efficiency, feed conversion, layer quail.

Abstract

The meat of local ducks generally has lower quality than chicken meat. Typical aroma, dark red color, and hard texture of duck meat affect consumers’ preference for it. This study was aimed at assessing the sensoric quality of meat of male local ducks(Anas plathyrhinchos) given betle (Piper betle Linn) leaf extract solution included in commercial ration. The study was conducted at the Poultry Farm of Department of Animal Husbandry, Faculty of Agriculture, Djuanda University, Bogor from June to August 2016. Twenty-four male local ducks aged 2 weeks with average body weight of 449.16±75.27 g were used. BR-21E commercial feed of PT Sinta Feedmill and betel leaf extract solution were used. A completely randomized design with 4 treatments and 3 replicates was used. Treatments consisted of 100% commercial feed (R0), commercial feed + 2.5% piper betel solution (R1), commercial feed + 5.0% piper betel solution (R2), and commercial feed + 7.5% piper betel solution (R3). Data were subjected to a Kruskal Wallis test. Measurements were taken on aroma, tenderness, color, taste, and juiceness. Results showed that there were significant differences (P<0.05) in color and taste. The inclusion of 2.5% piper betle extract solution in commercial rations improved the preference of panelists for the color and taste of meat of local ducks. However, treatments did not affect panelists judgement on the hedonic quality (aroma, tenderness, color, taste, and juiceness) of meat of local ducks.
