Abstract

The Middle East countries, such as Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Bahrain, Egypt, Turkey, or other countries, seemed to endlessly suffered security and political conflicts. In some countries, the conflict even leads to armed fightings, for example in Iraq, Syria and Yemen. Every day, the medias broadcast the development of the armed conflict in the Middle East, as if telling that this conflict is going to last forever. This phenomenon raises a question, what causes the Middle Eastern conflict to be prolonged? This article addresses the relations between the conflict and the phenomenon of neoliberalism which becomes the main driver of global economy. Using the concept of Military-Industrial Complex, this article argues that there are giant capitalist actors who maintain this condition so they can get huge profits due to the long-drawn armed conflict.

Abstract

The ex-US President, Barack Obama, was the first black-president, prompting hopes that he would make a more humanist foreign policy in the United States. Obama comes from the Democratic Party which is aggressively promoting democracy, humanism, and human rights. But in reality, during the two periods of Obama administration, the United States continues to wage war against the Middle East countries, whether directly or indirectly. This article raises the question, what shaped US foreign policy in the Middle East during the Obama administration. To answer the question the writer uses the wholistic and rational actor theory. The finding of this article is that wholistically, Obama does have characteristic differences, but the foreign policy he decided was the same as his predecessor presidents, prioritizing US-political economic interests in the region rather than keeping peace.

Abstract

The Arab League since its establishment in 1945 has failed to play a significant role in minimizing conflicts in the region. In some contemporary conflicts (Syria and Yemen), it is the the powerful countries of the League that became the main actors in the conflict. This raises the question, what is the reason behind this failure, especially political-economic reasons. Using the literature review, this paper finds that there are two factors contributing to the failure, namely economic interdependence between rich Arab countries and the United States, and secondly, a strong relationship between the United States and Israel. The later becomes the reason why the US takes advantage of its economic hegemony to defend the interests of Israel.

Abstract

Since the start of Arab Spring, the Middle East has witnessed the escalation of terrorism acts. Egypt even entered the emergency zone of terrorism after the fall of Muhammad Mursi from the presidency. Various groups of terror emerged in Egypt, among them is Anshar Bayt Al Maqdis who later joined ISIS and renamed Wilayat Sinai. This paper aims to analyze the transformation of terrorist groups by using instrumental and organizational theory. The findings of this research are that the ABM group is a transformation of pre-existing terror groups. It develop the organisation through delivering benefits, affiliations, competition, recruitment of members who use religious doctrine and take advantage of the economic and political conditions in the Sinai region.

Abstract

In this article the author tries to answer the research question, is it true that religion has encouraged terrorist groups to launch their acts of terror? To answer that, the author will use the thought of a comparative religious scholar who once served in the conflict areas of the Middle East, Charles Kimball, which is described in his book "When Religion Becomes Evil". Kimball used a historical, cultural, and political approach to explain his thought about relation between religion and violence. He identified five signs that people have to be alert; the signs when religious understanding has deviated so that it will bring disaster. These five signs are absolute truth claims, blind obedience, establishing the "ideal" time, the end justifies any means, and declaring holy war. The conclusion that can be drawn is that terrorist actors basically only use religion as a justification for their actions.

Abstract

This article discusses the paradigm that has been used by terror groups in the name of Islam, that is takfirism, which sees that killing the other party considered as kafir is a religious duty. This article reviews descriptively Ḥātim al-'Awnī's criticism of various assumptions of takfirism. In his explanation, al-'Awnī criticized the textual approach on the reading of the text of revelation because he thinks that textualism that leads them to the classical Khawarij's thought of takfir. The other side that is criticized from the assumption of takfirism is over generalization in interpreting the action of someone that indicates disbelief (kufr) in their oppinion. According to al-'Awnī, there are at least two variables that make the kafir stigma to be invalid. Two things are ignorance and takwil or a different exegesis toward the text. The doer of an action indicating kufr is not proper to be verdicted as kafir if he does it unsubconciously based on his ignorance. Similarly, if he does it based on a different exegesis of the text of revelation so the kafir stigma that againsts him becomes invalid. The other side revealed by al-'Awnī's exposure is that takfirism's thought does exist in the thought construct of Wahabism figures in Saudi Arabia since the era of Muḥammad bin Abdul Wahhāb.

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the relations between media and terrorism that are mutually influenced and mutually beneficial. The case studies taken are a series of terror in Paris (2015) and the Manchester (2017) bombing as these two cases became global issues involving global news networks. By implementing CNN Effect theory and media analysis, the author found that the global news corporates benefited from the terrorist actions, and vice versa, the media is an important tool for terror groups to expand their influence and threats on the global community. The advancement of information technology makes the media, consciously or unconsciously, becomes the 'best friend' for the terrorist group because of its role in spreading the terrorist’ message.
