Abstract

Induction motors offer many advantages tools, and therefore are becoming very popular industrially and commercially. This paper presents the implementation of Xmega microcontroller based PWM inverter controlled of four-switch three phase voltage source inverter (FSTPI) fed induction motor drive. The reduction of the number of power switches from six to four improves the cost effectiveness, volume-compactness and reliability of the three phase inverters in addition to less complexity of control algorithms and reduced interface circuits. Simulation and experimental work are carried out and results presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach. Simulation is carried out using SIMULINK and in experimental work, a prototype model is built to verify the simulation results. XMEGA microcontroller (XMEGA64A3) is used to generate the PWM pulses with a new algorithm for FSTPI to drive a 5 hp, 3-phase induction motor. Experimental and simulation results show that the proposed drive system provides a fast speed response and good disturbance rejection capability.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v3i2.2533

Abstract

This paper presents a realization of fuzzy-logic hysteresis control of а single-phase on-grid inverter. The inverter used for the research is implemented by the full-bridge power circuit and it is connected to the utility grid by means of LCL filter. For the purpose of the computer simulation the relative mathematical equations are issued. The research of the model established by these equations is done by means of computer simulation with the software MATLAB/SIMULINK. The operation of the model combines two non-linear control methods - fuzzy control and hysteresis control. Simulation results and their analysis are included. The operation of the model of the inverter is analyzed in two different cases of the output power of the system - 800W and 1600W approximately.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v3i2.3606

Abstract

The discontinuous space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) has well-known that can reduce switching losses. By simplifying the thermal management issues, the discontinuous SVPWM can potentially reduce the inverter size and cost. However, using the modulation due to different time interval equations for each sector can introduce glitches at the points when the sector is changed. The more main problem, it can increase unwanted harmonic content and current ripple. Consider the decrease in switching losses associated with discontinuous modulation allows the system to utilize a higher switching frequency, this paper present high frequency switching of optimized discontinuous SVPWM based on FPGA to overcome the problems above. The proposed SVPWM has been successfully implemented by using APEX20KE Altera FPGA to drive on a three phase inverter system with 1.5 kW induction machine as load. The results have proved that the method can reduce harmonic content and current ripple without glitches.DOI : http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v3i1.735

Abstract

This paper proposes a LABVIEW simulator for photovoltaic (PV) systems. The effect of irradiance and temperature on PV module is very crucial when computing the model PV parameters. Many modeling techniques were used but this approach enables the computation of model parameters at any irradiance and temperature point. It has the ability to simultaneously compute all the PV model parameters. The accuracy of the simulator is verified by applying the model to 36 W PV modules. The performance of the model is tested using a single diode model, a shunt resistance Rp and series resistance Rs. The proposed model was found to be better and accurate for any irradiance and temperature variations. The proposed model can be very useful for PV Engineers and expert who require a simple, fast and accurate PV simulator to design their systems.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v3i2.2422

Abstract

This paper presents a comparison between NPC (neutral point clamped) and H-cascaded multilevel inverters by considering the increas or decrease of harmonics in the output line to line voltages,  phase voltages and common mode voltage. Multilevel voltage source converters are getting increased importance for applications in the medium and high voltage range. A conventional two-level PWM (pulse width modulated) inverter generates high frequency common mode voltage with high dv/dt. In the same way, commonly used multilevel inverter modulation schemes generate common mode voltage. Common mode voltage may cause motor shaft voltages, bearing currents and EMI (electromagnetic interference). Common mode voltage depends not only on switching method but also on earth mass. The use of earth mass on a proper pl.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v3i2.3605

Abstract

Switch-mode power supplies usually emit electromagnetic interferences at the switching frequency and its multiple harmonics. We propose a feedback control method improving switch-mode power supplies electromagnetic compatibility (spectral peaks compliance). Inducing chaos in these systems has recently been suggested as a means of reducing these spectral emissions. Indeed, the application of the classical method of chaos anticontrol to these systems leads the output voltage to have an excessive ripple or an undesirable spectrum, whereas these problems are solved with ours. We propose here a converter, able at the same time to achieve low spectral emission and to maintain a small ripple. The design of this controller is based on the property that chaotified nonlinear systems present many independent chaotic attractors of small dimensions. To confirm the efficiency of this method, a comparison with the anticontrol method is included, together with a numerical example clearly showing the effect of this control.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v3i2.2136

Abstract

This paper presents a New FOC Approach of Induction Motor Drive using DTC Strategy for the Minimization of CMV (common mode voltage) with the switching tables for the generation of PWM signals. High performance induction motor drives require a better transient and steady state performance. To achieve high performance, there are two control strategies namely, field oriented control (FOC) and direct torque control (DTC) for induction motor drives. Though these two methods give better transient performance, the FOC needs reference frame transformations and DTC gives large steady state ripples. To overcome these drawbacks, this paper presents a novel FOC algorithm for induction motor drives, which combines the principles of both FOC and DTC. The proposed method uses a predetermined switching table instead of a much more time consuming pulse width modulation (PWM) procedure. This approach gives a quick torque response like DTC and gives reduced ripple like FOC. The switching table is based on the conventional DTC principle, which gives good performance with reduced common mode voltage variations. To validate the proposed method numerical simulations have been carried out and compared with the existing algorithms. The simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method. Abstract

This paper proposes a Random Frequency PWM synchronized for a three phase inverter implemented with use of FPGA and applied to a 1-hp induction motor drive system for the reduction of harmonics and improvement of fundamental peak voltage. For providing alternating output voltage with a specific magnitude and frequency to industrial applications, three-phase inverter is preferred.  The gating signals to the inverter are produced by means of Random Frequency PWM to significantly reduce harmonics in comparison to currently used PWMs.  FPGA is used to produce gating signals to the switches in a three-phase bridge inverter since a faster speed of operation is needed. The simulation is carried on VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHDL) using ModelSim. Then, this VHDL model is imported into Matlab environment and co-simulated using HDL Cosimulation toolbox. The simulation and experimental results are presented with a view to determine whether Random Frequency PWM performs better in terms of fundamental voltage and Total Harmonic Distortion.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v3i2.2895

Abstract

This paper proposes a sliding mode control strategy for a three-phase shunt active power filter. The SAPF consists of four-leg voltage source inverter bridge. The SAPF ensures full compensation for harmonic phase currents, harmonic neutral current, reactive power compensation and unbalanced nonlinear load currents. The modulation task can be carried out with three dimensional space vector modulation, which operate under a constant switching frequency. The simulation results show that the performance of the four-leg SAPF with the proposed control algorithm – compared with PI controller - is found considerably effective and adequate to compensate harmonics, reactive power, neutral current and balance load currents.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v3i2.2012

Abstract

This paper deals about fuzzy logic control of closed loop controlled five level Multi Level Inverter (MLI) driven three phase induction motor. Three phase Induction motor is most widely used drive in Industries, so needs proper control of speed. Induction motor is fed from five level multilevel inverter which is controlled by fuzzy logic. The closed loop consists of two loops. First inner loop is current loop and second outer loop is speed loop. The torque is varied at different times and corresponding change in speed and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is observed. The MLI is controlled by Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) Technique.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/ijpeds.v3i2.3062
