Abstract

Radicalism exists in every religion, including Islam. There are various motives of the perpetrators to carry out radical actions, one of which is literal religious knowledge, such knowing the hadith. Radicals subscribe to an essentialist or primordialist worldview when it comes to comprehending religious teaching in the context of societal violence. They view religious conflict as a natural part of religion. This essay aims to investigate the radical potential of the jihad hadiths. The author also examines how radical organizations figuratively construct this potential to support their violent actions. This study finds that literal interpretation of jihadist hadiths frequently serves as a catalyst for religious violence. It does this by applying qualitative approaches to hadith literature. Jihad is only understood as battle in this context (qitaal). The humanist interpretation of the hadith of jihad, which can imply a commitment to maintain truth and justice, is negated by this literal interpretation.

Abstract

It is a known fact that Covid-19 has affected all academic activities including at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). There were many implications on students’ lives in terms of their academic affairs, mental health, finance, etc. In such a situation, tawakkul as coping mechanism plays a significant part, as it can define one’s capability in coping not only with the challenges due to Covid-19, but also with some tests from Allāh. This study analysed the perception of Hamka on Qur´ānic verses related to tawakkul. It also looked at how IIUM students dealt with challenges brought on by Covid-19. This study employed a qualitative research method in collecting data through semi-structured interviews and analysing them. The findings showed that tawakkul as coping mechanism according to Hamka refers to having strong imān in order to be able to overcome painful or difficult emotions. When tawakkul is considered as a coping mechanism, it appeared that it has a very considerable overlap and can be applied for the purpose of assisting one to live a better life. This is due to the fact that practising tawakkul as coping mechanisms will assist one in overcoming painful or difficult emotions. The findings also revealed that all of respondents believed that tawakkul was immensely helpful in coping with the challenges they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Islamists have always been defined by two categories, politically they want to unite religion and state and religiously they are literalists. This article will re-examine these two theses by assuming that not all islamists are literalists. Using descriptive-analytical method, this article will compare the interpretation of two prominent islamists leaders, Mohammad Natsir (early Islamist) and Felix Y Siauw (contemporary Islamist). Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutics will be used as an analytical method whereas Abdul Mustaqim's epistemological classification of tafsiir will be used to map those islamist thoughts among other scholars. This article found, firstly, that not all islamists understand the Qur'an literally. Islamists are the same as literalists was produced by research that take sample on post-Soeharto Islamists. Second, there is a shift in the paradigm of islamists interpretation. The early phase of Islamists tended to be more contextual and influenced by early islamic reform. As for contemporary Islamists, they tend to be textual and militant. This research has shown that it is necessary to study these islamists, especially their understanding of Qur’anic text.

Abstract

This article explores the influence of misogynist hadith texts on islamic boarding school community in Kerinci. The pattern of life in Islamic boarding schools is something phenomenal because it describes their behavior which is based on their understanding of sacred texts such as hadith. However, this behavior is certainly different when viewed from the paradigm of text interpreters, whether textualist or contextualist. This article highlights the dimension which in the context of living hadith is known as collective performation. This research focus on tracing the hadiths that developed in traditional and modern Islamic boarding schools. By using a qualitative method with an ethnographic and gender approach to two types of Islamic boarding schools in Kerinci, the authors found that traditional Islamic boarding schools tended to be textual. They understand the hadith that prohibits women from traveling without a mahram strictly according to its textual meaning. Meanwhile, modern Islamic boarding schools understand this hadith contextually, that safe and secure environmental conditions allow women to leave the house without being accompanied by a mahram. The authors argue that the differences in the meaning of this hadith cannot be separated from the reading sources developed at the Islamic boarding school, as well as the influence of the teaching staff.

Abstract

This article discusses the interpretation of the Qur’an by Habib Husein Ja’far on “Habib dan Cing” YouTube channel. The development of digital media creates a new opportunity of Islamic preachers to use the digital media to widen their audiences. Habib Husein and Abdel Achrian employ the “Habib dan Cing” channel to perform da’wa which contains the interpretation of the Qur’anic verses (tafsir). This paper focuses specifically on the interpretation of the Qur’an sura al-Humaza (the traducer). This research finds that Habib Husein’s Qur’anic interpretation can be characterized as social tafsir which is delivered with millennial style, full of jokes and laughs, which makes the tafsir is easily understood by the public. Among influential factors that shape his tafsir are its rooted references to the classical as well as modern tafsir, his relevant educational background, and its connection to the contemporary Indonesian society.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore Fred M. Donner’s views on the distinction between the Qur'an and Hadith among orientalists. This study describes Donner's views on orientalist thought, especially John Wansbrough who stated that the Qur'an and Hadith originate from the same time. This paper uses a qualitative study in the type of library research with a descriptive qualitative analysis method to analyze and elaborate on the views of Fred M. Donner. The results of this study show that, in contrast to the hadiths which enthusiastically discuss political topics, the Al-Qur'an rarely provides answers about the political leadership of its followers. Second, unlike the hadiths, which are full of anachronistic allusions and explanations of earlier prophets, the Qur'an does not include any reference to events that occurred after previous prophets. Third, the textual vocabulary and preferences of the Qur'an and hadith when discussing religious practices vary. The contrast set forth above thus refutes claims made by non-Muslim academics that the hadith were created at the same time as the Qur'an or were written before it. Because the hadith was made after the date of birth of the Qur'an, in a certain setting.
