Abstract

This study aims to find out types of error in using gerunds, the most dominant error and the causes of error made by the students of the sixth semester of English Department FKIP UNIB 2016/2017 in using gerunds. The title of this paper is “The Study of English Department Students’ Errors in Using Gerunds (A Case Study at the Students of the Sixth Semester of English Department FKIP UNIB 2016/2017). In term of research methodology, the researcher used both quantitative and qualitative method in analyzing the data. The technique of collecting the data in this research was a composed test. The subject of this study was 79 students in the sixth semester of English Department FKIP UNIB 2016/2017. The result of this research showed that the students of the sixth semester of English Department FKIP UNIB 2016/2017 made errors in using eight types of gerunds. They were gerund as object of preposition, gerund as subject of a sentence, gerund as direct object of certain verbs, gerund as the complement of a sentence, gerund after special expressions, gerund as passive form, gerund as possessive and gerund used in the negative adjective ‘no’. The most dominant error made by the students of the sixth semester of English Department FKIP UNIB 2016/2017 in using gerunds was gerund as direct object of certain verbs. In this research, the researcher found three causes of error in using gerunds. They were overgeneralization, ignorance of rule instructions and incomplete application of rules. Ignorance of rule instructions became the dominant cause in this research. The errors made by the students in using eight types of gerunds were caused by ignorance of rule restriction because the students did not master the rule in grammar especially in learning gerunds

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the types and the dominant type of thematic progression in the background section of theses written by undergraduate students of the English Department of Bengkulu University (UNIB) in 2017. The design was descriptive quantitative. The sample consisted of 16 background sections of undergraduate theses, which were chosen randomly. The data were collected by the documentation instrument. The result showed that there were three types of thematic progression, namely, constant theme, linear theme, and split rheme. Furthermore, the linear theme was the dominant type.The order of frequency was as follows: linear theme (50.07%), constant theme (45.81%), and split rheme (4.10%). The conclusion was that all types of thematic progression were used and that the linear theme was the most common in the background section of the UNIB undergaduate theses.

Abstract

The design of this research was descriptive quantitative. It aimed to find out the category of material and task in Bahasa Inggris Textbook for Senior High School published by Kemendikbud 2014. The subject of this study was textbook for grade tenth, consisting of 2 books (first semester and second semester) which each book consist of 9 chapters which were made up 268 materials and tasks. The data was collected by using observation checklist that proposed by Permendikbud number 08 2016 and some experts (Cunningsworth (1995), Celce-Murcia (1979), Wahab (2013)). The result showed that the materials and tasks which divided into 4 aspects; material aspect, linguistic aspect, material presentation aspect and graph aspect showed the different result. The material aspect was categorized into poor category while the others were categorized into good category. Therefore this book can be categorized into good category. In language skills (listening skill, speaking skill, reading skill and writing skill) also showed the different result. The listening skill showed low percentage in good category while the others skill showed high percentage in good category. Consequently, it can be concluded that language skills in this book was not balance.

Abstract

This research was aimed to know  and to analyze how English students in University of Bengkulu, English Education Study program class A and B, academic year 2015/2016 pronounced English consonants /?/ and /ð/. The instrument used for collecting the data was recording. This research used qualitative and quantitative method. The result of this research showed most of English students pronounced English consonants /?/ and /ð/ incorrectly. It showed that the students were not good at pronouncing English consonants /?/ and /ð/ when they were located at the middle or at the final of the words. Based on the findings, the study concluded that the errors were caused by several reasons such as the sound of /?/ and /ð/ which did not exist in Bahasa Indonesia, the influence of similar sound with Bahasa Inonesia consonants /t/ and /d/, and also the carelessness

Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate the forms and the differences of code mixing by English Study Program students. The subject were four enrollments, they were 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th semester students. The object of this researcher was English Study Program student’s status on Facebook. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The instruments of this research were note and checklist. Technique of this research was documentation. The result of this research shows the English Study Program students used forms of code mixing such as; the insertion of word, the insertion of phrase, the insertion of hybrid, the insertion of word reduplication, the insertion of idiom, and the insertion of clause. Furthermore, there were the differences of using of code mixing by English Study Program students in each semester

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the correlation of students’ listening self-efficacy and their listening comprehension.. The population of this research was the Eighth Semester English Education Study Program Students of Universitas Bengkulu in the 2018/2019. The sample was taken by using total sampling of the students who has TOEFL score below 450.  There were 40 students as the sample from two classes. There were two research instruments used in this research, listening test and self-efficacy questionnaire. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the r-obtained was 0.20. It means that there is a correlation between the students’ self-efficacy and their listening comprehension.  As a consequence, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. Since the r- obtained (0.20) was lower than the r-table(0.3125), the correlation was not really significant.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out students’ attitude toward “Quipper School” as an English online learning media. The population of this research was the whole students of SMAN 1 Argamakmur Bengkulu Utara, with the total population of 667 students. The sample of this research was 158 students. It was chosen by using clustered random sampling. The instrument that was used in this research was questionnaire which consists of 27 items and was divided into three aspects, namely cognitive, affective, and behavior aspect. The interview was used to confirm and to support the data from the questionnaire. The result of this research shows that students had positive attitude toward “Quipper School” as an English online learning media, with the mean score for all aspect was 3.76; the mean score for cognitive aspect was 3.85; the mean score for affective aspect was 3.71; and the mean score for behavior aspect was 3.72. It means that students of SMAN 1 Argamakmur Bengkulu Utara generally have a positive attitude toward “Quipper School” as an English online learning media.

Abstract

This research is aimed at finding the language learning strategy used by successful students that is categorized into six kinds of strategies; memory, cognitive, metacognitive, affective, compensation, and social strategy suggested by Oxford (1990). The population of the research are students of English study program University Bengkulu year 2014 and 2015 that have GPA 3.51 to 4.00. Methodology of this research is descriptive quantitative. Data were collected by using questionnaires as the instruments. The questionnaires consist of 50 items based on Oxford’s Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) version 7.0 about language learning strategy. The data were processed by using Microsoft Excel 2013 to find the most dominant strategy used by the students. The results showed that the successful students use more than one language learning strategy or mixed strategy, including memory, cognitive, metacognitive, affective, compensation, and social strategy. The dominant strategy used by successful students was metacognitive with mean score 3.94 followed by compensation (3.81), cognitive (3.59), social (3.43), memory (3.31), and affective strategy (3.30). Metacognitive strategies have positive and significant influence toward academic achievement on successful students in learning a language. Metacognitive strategies can help the students to develop good thinking management ability. It also create good academic achievement. In the other hand, the choice of lowest strategy seems to be affected by technology advances, curriculum, feelings, mood, and attitude of the students which is unpredictable.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the ability of the students in 6th semester of English study program in using English conjunctions. The design of this research used descriptive quantitative study. The population of this research was 78 students in English study program Bengkulu University and the samples were 65 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used multiple choices conjunctions test. Based on the finding of the research, the ability of the students in using coordinate conjunctions was in enough category with the mean scores 61.  The ability of the students in using correlative conjunction was good with the mean scores 79. The ability of the students in using relative conjunction was good with the mean score 78. The ability of the students in using subordinate conjunction was good with mean score 78, the same as the ability in using relative conjunction. According to the result in every type of conjunctions, the researcher concluded that the ability of the students in using conjunctions was in enough category with the mean score 74.

Abstract

This research is aimed at analyzing the idiomatic expressions encountered in “The Internship” movie subtitled by Jack and The Wilee. This movie was translated as ideal translation based on Larson’s theory and to explain how the idiomatic expressions translation of “The Internship” movie are acceptable or not based on Larson’s theory. The object of this study is “The Internship” Movie Subtitle by Jack and the Wilee. In this research, the researcher collected the data by using documentation (library research). Then, there were several steps in procedure of data analysis which was known as Preparing and organizing the data, Coding, and the last steps is Re-presenting the data. According to Larson’s table that the researcher used to analyze the translation appropriateness with Larson’s Criteria of Ideal Translation, the researcher gets the result that show the translation of idiomatic expressions are acceptable or not with Larson’s Criteria. There are three criteria of ideal translation based on Larson’s Theory named Accurate (A), Clear (C), and Natural (N). From the total 55 Idiomatic Expression the researcher shows 80% are Ideal-acceptable translation (I-Acc), 11% are Acceptable translation (Acc), 2% are Unacceptable translation (Un-Acc), and 7% are Failed translation (F). Overall, the translation of idiomatic expression by Jackandthewilee is Acceptable
