Abstract

First, have a definite, clear practical ideal; a goal, an objective. Second, have the necessary means to achieve your ends; wisdom, money, materials, and methods. Third, adjust all your means to that end.

Abstract

Before the arrival and the dominion of the Portuguese and the Dutchmen with its Christianity in the island of Timor, the Dawanese people of Timor have been inheriting and practising its own tribal religion. Even today this native religion has quite strongly and deeply influenced the religious conduct and behaviour of many Dawanese Catholics. These Catholics, beside practising their Catholic faith, they are still practising the “faith and the rite” of Hauteas. Hauteas itself is a strong big stick of wood with three branches, and sorrounding its foot there is a constructed circular altar of stones, that is Faot Makana. Hauteas is always built in the front of the sacred house of the Dawanese that is Uem Leu or Uem Adat. For the Dawanese people, the Hauteas is essentially “the living tree” since it is symbolizing, representing and manifesting the faith and belief of the Dawanese people to their gods. Hauteas functions also as an altar to pray and to offer the sacrifices. Hauteas is the “fountain of life”. The “life” of the Dawanese people comes through the trunk of this wood with its three branches. The longer and tallest branch of Hauteas symbolizes and represents the presence of the supreme god (Uis Neno), that is the lord of heaven. One of the lower and shorter branches symbolizes and represents the presence of Uis Pah, that is the lord of earth, and another one symbolizes and represents the presence of Be’i-Nai, that is the genealogical ancestors. The altar of stones (Faot Ben Makana) is “the offering and meeting place” between the Dawanese with their gods. The Dawanese people of Timor have a kind of “triune god” that gives and grants upon them life, safety, fertility, welfare, peace and blessings.

Abstract

Sex abuse in the USA leads the church to the bankruptcies and lost her credibility because the priests have mismanaged their authority for their own interests. The faithful are angry to the hierarchy, seeing that most of the victims are children under age, and they do not have any power to escape from the abusive relationship. The church in Indonesia should learn from the cases in the USA, and prepares the Indonesian priests and all people working in the Church to apply the ethical conducts of profession.

Abstract

This study answers a phenomenon of double funeralrite that often occurs among the Catholics who converted from Marapu, the ethnic religion of the people of Sumba. Double funeralrite is the practice of funeral ceremonies consisting of official liturgy of the Catholic Church and spontaneously followed by a number of Marapu rites. Such a practice indicates a dualism of belief, in the sense that people have embraced the Catholic faith but are still attached to the elements of their old beliefs. In this study the author investigates in depth both the funeral rites according to Marapu and the double practice phenomenon in funeral ceremonies of Catholics who converted from Marapu. The main purpose of this research is to find parallels and intersections between Catholic’s concept of life after death and that of Marapu’s. Discussion and analysis of the data prioritizes the meaning behind each verbal and non-verbal expression. The meaning of prayers, rituals and symbols used in funeral according to Marapu reveals universal values that parallel to the values contained in Catholic teaching. According to Marapu belief, death is the return of the soul towards “ancestral village”, which is the final resting place of souls after death. This return is believed to be a long journey before arriving at the ancestral village. Prayers and ceremonies carried out by humans aim to help the soul to enter the ancestral village. This concept parallels to the Catholic understanding of soul purification after death before entering the eternal happiness in Heaven. Such parallels allow a construction of the encounter between Catholic teachings and Marapu ones about life after death.

Abstract

The natural environment suffered under dominion of science, mother earth in distress and progress is no longer treated as sacrosanct. This is calling for our responsibility, and requires more serious attention from all parties, at all levels of spheres of life. In this article, I will be presented a programmatic reading of the ecological and environmental crisis from phenomenological perspective. In the first part, it will be shown that this crisis is rooted in naturalisme, i.e dualistic point of views. As a critique of this form of thoughts, a theoretical response will be demonstrated through eco-phenomenology as an interdisciplinary theory in the second part of this article, which followed by a reformulation of the concept of logos (reason) in the third part of this article based on concept logos of life from Anna-Teresa Tymieniecka and Henryk Skolimowski’s participatory mind. The fourth part is a reflection of creation as a tabernacle of the universe, a place where the divine name resides, and will be closed with a small conclusion.
