Abstract

Muhammad ‘Abduh, according to Muhammad ‘Imârah, is the greatest Islamic scholar in this modern age who provides reflection and interpretation of the verses of the Qoran. The great name ‘Abduh in the field of interpretation is increasingly felt after we know that many commentators post‘ Abduh who followed in his footsteps and manhaj. Among them there are those that emphasize more on the element of ijtimâ`i, there are also those who emphasize etiquette side (adabi) and so on. This article discusses the influence of Muhammad ‘Abduh’s interpretations on the interpretations of post-‘Abduh ex-commentators, especially on the five commentaries popular among Muslims, namely Rashid Ridlâ, Mahmud Syaltût, ‘Abd al-Rahman (Bint al-Syâthî) ), Ahmad Mushthafa al-Maraghî, and Sayyid Quthb. The results showed that Rasyid Ridlâ continued to maintain the interpretation of his teacher while adding necessary explanations. This means, the impact of ‘Abduh's interpretation is strong on Ridlâ's interpretation. For Mahmud Syaltût, Abduh’s influence was evident in his view that the Qoran contained basic themes and objectives. While the prominent feature of Bint al-Syâthî’s interpretation is its emphasis on the rhetorical aspect (al-nāhiyah al-bayâniyah). ‘Abduh’s influence is also thick in the Tafsir al-Maraghî when he states that one of manhaj taken in the preparation of this interpretation is turning away (al-i'râd) from the narrations of ma'tsûrah, except for mutawâtir and the narrations that are not contrary to the spirit of Islam. Finally for Quthb, Abduh’s influence was seen from his beautiful literary elements.

Abstract

This article tries to uncover the leading figure of Ibn Taimiyah as an Islam's most forceful theologians of tasawuf (Islamic Mysticism), beside his having great knowledge of other Islamic fields such as kalam (dogmatic theology), fiqh (Jurisprudence) or syariah (Religious Law), hadist (prophetic saying) and tafsir (the science of explanation of the Qur'an), or even in Islamic politics. Apart from that, this writing would like to clear up the issues concerning Ibn Taimiyah of whether or not he is really against tassawuh as in accordance with a great deal of observers's thought on him, or he himself has a particular thought on tassawuh. This writing tries to trace and uncover the Ibn Taimiyah's thought and outlook about the history of tassawuh development and a his criticism at Sufis at his time being considered exaggeratedly on the matter.

Abstract

In the doctrine of Shi’te eschatology (a branch of theology), Mahdi Imam and he is also called twelfth Imam being disappeared (ghoybah) will reappear in the last day of the world and from the Devine government to realize the justice, piece and welfare of mankind. The belief of Mahdi Imam has helped the Shi’tes with great patience to face a bad situation during the history of social political unrest in the numerous parts of Islamic world. The doctrine of ghaybah is a direct consequence of belief that the world will not secure if it is without being led by an Imam (leader) to guide mankind through the straight way. During the virtual disappearance of twelfth Imam, the political and religious duties are under the leadership of Ulama (Islamic scholars) reaching the level of Mujtahid-an expert in Islamic law (marja’ taklid/source of authority) acts as representative of the public. Since the twelfth Imam has disappeared, shi’te ulama have completely different opinions in the authority of ijtihad and the relationship with political structure, so the conflict arises between Akhbari group and Ushuli group and this is finally won by Ushuli group. The methods of ijtihad (original interpretation of problems not precisely covered in the Qur’an and hadith) used by Ushuli group are clear thinking and contemplation of the verses of Qur’an and hadith containing general principles to be interpreted to solve juridical problems that come out in society.

Abstract

This research aims to elaborate ideas about the creation of women in the perspective of Sufism metaphysics. The study uses text analysis methods, especially Sufism metaphysical texts. The texts on the creation of women in a number of Sufism literature are critically analyzed. The results show that apart from theology and fiqh, Sufism offers a space of creative feminism about interpretation. Sufism's metaphysical interpretation of the creation of women focuses more on cosmological and metaphysical aspects. Ibn 'Arabi and Jalaluddin al-Rumi with their creative interpretations gave more appreciation to feminism. They even give and respect women's positions that reflect God's creativity. Seeing God in women means seeing God Himself.

Abstract

Tarekat Ni’matullahiyah (Allah pleasent Order) was founded by Shah Ni'matullah Wali and had spread across world parts of Asia, Europe, America, and Africa. London is the center of this tarekat teachings in the West, but it seems that it does not unfold its wings in Southeast Asia yet i.e. in Malay world especially in Indonesia, despite of Shiite teachings influenced the culture of its community, i.e., Barzanji (History of Muhammad Prophet life, according to Islamic Ensyclopaedia, explaned that al-Barzanji rises  in order circle) and  War Tale of Malay World in Riau. Tarekat Ni’matullahiyah refused fatalistic, static, excessive, alienation and ascetic paradigm of tarekat  (khalwat, zuhd and suluk) practice that cause to decrease and poverty. Nevertheless, the adherents of this tarekat strives to free themselves from any bunches and attentions both of physically and spiritually (dzikr and fikr or meditation and contemplation) as facilities for attaining the more gracious and eternal objective. It is just exactley on account of that Allah pleasant Order is a dynamic, humanistic, cosmopolite and sophisticate order. e core of Sufi’s doctrine that is developed in tarekat ritual system functions to strengthen spirituality and morality of the tarekat community. Different Sufi’s doctrines in each tarekat result in different social-political relationship among those three tarekat communities. Second, the social-political roles, relationships and participations of the tarekat community change along with the political changes of the government that ruled both in colonial era and in the Indonesian independence. Third, the social-political movement of the tarekat community can be differentiated into: inclusive-pragmatism of Godebag community, exclusivism-fundamentalism of Wara’i community, and fundamentalism-pragmatism of Tijani com-munity. Fourth, tarekat community movements promote spiritual and moral public education in social-political life in Indonesia . Based on the findings, it can be concluded that social-political movements of tarekat community are in line with Sufi’s doctrines that change into various movement types. Therefore, tarekat community is predicted to develop changing social-political movements.

Abstract

One of the phenomenal Tafsir in Indonesia written by non-Arabic commentators is Tafsir Al-Azhar by Hamka (Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah). This interpretation becomes a reference for Muslims in Indonesia before other modern interpretations come. This interpretation is widely referenced by Qur’an scholars because the language is easy to digest and detailed explanation in accordance with present times. Based on a search of some literature there is no specific discussion about manhaj Tafsir Al-Azhar and its application. So this article will critically examine Hamka’s Tafsir Al-Azhar, especially from the aspect of manhaj and its application in its interpretation. Specifically this article will discuss the method of interpretation, the mechanism of interpretation, and the style of interpretation. The approach used by the writer is Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis. Critical discourse analysis is one of the methods of analyzing discourse in a work by critically analyzing. Fairclough uses discourse analysis by pointing the use of language as a social practice not just an individual activity. In addition, Fairclough also created a model that brought together discourse analysis which was based on linguistics as well as on socio-political thought, or generally integrated with social change. The results of the study shows that Tafsir Al-Azhar is included in the category of non-school interpretation (non-madzhab), which is also characterized by patterns of thought and modern interpretation, especially from Tafsir Al-Manâr and Fî Zhilâl Al-Qur'ân, two books of tafsir are more patterned of adabi -ijtima’î.

His most important view on education is that education plays the most urgent roles in developing human civilization. According to Ibnu Khaldun, education should involve two aspects, material and spiritual. This view was based on the argumentation that human need is a combination of the two aspects. That's why, according to his opinion, the purpose of education should meet both potencies simultaneously. However, regarding that spiritual factor mostly affect the human life, furthermore, he says that spiritual education should be prioritized.
