Abstract

This research aims to know the effectiveness of making summaries in student achievement in writing and to find out if making a summary is able to improve student performance in writing in the grade ten students private high school Melati Binjai 2017/ 2018. In this study, apply the creation summary as an independent variable (X) and student learning achievement in writing as a dependent variable (Y), with hypotheses: there is a significant influence of the implementation of making summaries on achievements Students in writing in grade ten students from 2017/2018 grade ten from private SMA Melati Binjai. The population of this research is the XI-grade private high school student Melati Binjai in 2017/1988 consisting of 30 students. Samples taken using all sampling, the total sample is 30 students. Authors use tests as data collection instruments. Data is analyzed by using the test-t formula. Based on data analysis, it was found that the value T-observed (to) higher than the T-table value, (tobserved = 23.2 > Ttable = 2.04). Therefore, hypotheses submitted by the author are accepted. In other words, there is a significant influence of the implementation of making summaries on student achievement in writing.

Abstract

Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui fenomena kontekstual code switching yang terjadi didalam proses seminar proposal Program Studi Bahasa Inggris Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (STKIP) Budidaya Binjai. Adapun ruang lingkupnya adalah; (1) jenis kontekstual code switching yang digunakan oleh dosen dan mahasiswa bahasa Inggris (2) faktor penentu kontekstual code switching yang dilakukan dosen dan mahasiswa didalam proses seminar proposal Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris STKIP Budidaya Binjai. Penelitian ini mengambil data dari tuturan dosen dan mahasiswa selama proses seminar proposal Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dan data diperoleh melalui observasi, wawancara, rekaman dan catatan lapangan. Dari hasil temuan dapat disimpulkan bahwa code switching terjadi dalam tuturan selama proses seminar proposal Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris STKIP Budidaya Binjai. Jenis kontekstual code switching yang terdapat dalam tuturan berdasarkan teori Hudson (1996) yaitu Situational code switching dan Metaphorical code switching. Dari temuan diperolah bahasa yang digunakan selama proses seminar proposal adalah bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris. Dari hasil penelitian juga disimpulkan bahwa faktor penentu dosen dan mahasiswa melakukan code switching adalah karena perubahan situasi tutur, kehadiran orang ketiga dan peralihan pokok pembicaraan. Kata Kunci: Code Switching, Kontekstual Code Switching, Faktor Penentu Code Switching

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektivitas membuat rangkuman dalam prestasi siswa dalam menulis dan untuk mengetahui apakah membuat rangkuman mampu meningkatkan prestasi siswa secara tertulis pada siswa kelas sepuluh SMA Swasta Melati Binjai 2017/2018. Dalam penelitian ini, menerapkan ringkasan pembuatan sebagai variabel independen (X) dan prestasi belajar siswa dalam menulis sebagai variabel dependen (Y), dengan hipotesis: ada pengaruh yang signifikan dari penerapan membuat ringkasan pada prestasi siswa secara tertulis pada siswa kelas sepuluh 2017/2018 kelas sepuluh dari SMA Swasta Melati Binjai. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI SMA Swasta Melati Binjai tahun 2017/1988 yang terdiri dari 30 siswa. Sampel diambil dengan menggunakan semua sampling, total sampel adalah 30 siswa. Penulis menggunakan tes sebagai instrumen pengumpulan data. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan rumus uji-t. Berdasarkan analisis data, ditemukan bahwa nilai t-diamati (untuk) lebih tinggi dari nilai t-tabel, (tobserved = 23.2> ttable = 2.04). Oleh karena itu, hipotesis yang diajukan oleh penulis diterima. Dengan kata lain, ada pengaruh yang signifikan dari penerapan membuat ringkasan pada prestasi siswa secara tertulis.

Abstract

Dosen dan mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris notabenenya harus menggunakan bahasa Inggris didalam proses kegiatan yang berhubungan dengan Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Faktanya, terbatasnya penggunaan bahasa Inggris membuat mahasiswa sering menggunakan code switching dalam kegiatan yang berhubungan dengan Program Studi Pendidikan bahasa Inggris. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui fenomena code switching yang terjadi didalam proses seminar proposal Prodi Bahasa Inggris Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (STKIP) Budidaya Binjai. Penelitian deskriptif kualitatif ini  mengambil data dari proses seminar proposal Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris yang mana dosen penguji dan mahasiswa peserta seminar sebagai subjek penelitian dan data diperoleh melalui observasi, wawancara, rekaman dengan menggunakan rekaman video dan catatan lapangan. Dari hasil temuan disimpulkan bahwa code switching terjadi dalam tuturan selama proses seminar proposal prodi Bahasa Inggris. Jenis code switching yang terdapat dalam tuturan berdasarkan teori Romaine (2000) yaitu Inter-sentential code switching, Intra-sentential code switching dan Tag switching. Faktor dosen dan mahasiswa melakukan code switching adalah karena perubahan situasi karena hadirnya orang ketiga, perubahan situasi dari formal ke informal atau sebaliknya, dan berubahnya topik pembicaraan. Dari hasil interview juga disimpulkan bahwa mahasiswa melakukan code switching karena bahasa Inggris bukan bahasa pertama mereka sehingga kurangnya kosakata bahasa Inggris membuat mereka sering menggunakan code switching didalam percakapannya. Penelitian ini dibiayai oleh SIMLITABMAS. Direktorat Riset dan Pengabdian Masyarakat. Direktorat Jenderal Penguatan Riset dan Pengembangan. Abstract

Dunia bisnis adalah dunia yang sangat berkembang dalam kehidupan manusia saat ini. Perkembangan yang pesat inilah yang membuat manusia memiliki lapangan pekerjaan yang cukup beragam. Dan salah satu surat yang sangat penting dan memiliki hubungan yang sangat erat dengan dunia bisnis adalah surat lamaran pekerjaan. Surat ini merupakan langkah awal untuk membuat pertemuan antara satu instansi yang berperan sebagai targetdengan pihak pelamar yang berperan sebagai penulis surat yang akan berujung pada sebuah kesepakatan hubungan kerja. Adapun dalam penulisan surat ini tentu meliputi penggunaan dan pemilihan adverb atau kata keterangan yang penggunaannya dipengaruhi oleh konteks situasi.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the effect of temporal conjunction mastery and students’ achievement in writing procedure text of the 2017/2018 eleventh year students of SMA Swasta Persiapan Stabat were divided into two classes. They were XI IPA1and XI IPA2. There are 60 students. That number then became the sample of this research. The design of the study was categorized as an experiment quantitative research. It meant there were two groups. They were experimental group that received treatment. This study was conducted by an experimental research. It aimed to measure the students’ ability on descriptive writing. Writing is one of four basic skills. And it is one productive skill in English. It is very important in studying English. The writers used the written test. The writers, as the learning input in understanding the nature of procedure text and the ways to teach procedure text for Senior High School Students effectively and efficiently. The data were acquired by using written test. The test consisted of two types; they were pre-test and post-test. After analyzing the data, the finding indicates that result of analysis was 3.50. It was found out that observed was higher than t-table or it can be said (3.50 > 2.002;α=0.05). It means that temporal conjunction mastery and students’ achievement in writing procedure text of the 2017/2018 eleventh year students of SMA Swasta Persiapan Stabat.

Abstract

Indonesia recognizes that Bahasa as a national language which has function as unity language for its society. In fact, the tendency of society especially millennial generation used slang in daily conversation is higher than used Bahasa itself. This study aims to analyse the phenomenon of slang words used by millennial generation in Instagram. The scope of this study is to investigate types of slang used by millennial generation in Instagram, how the meaning of slang words used by millennial generation in Instagram and why millennial generation used slang words in Instagram. Descriptive qualitative research was applied in this study and obtained the data from the discourse of 30 millennial generations in Instagram. The data was obtained from observation, interview and documentation. The result of the data showed that millennial generation used slang words in their communication in Instagram namely there were 31 slang words found in their caption in Instagram. These words contained five types of slang; fresh and creative; flippant; imitative; acronym; and clipping. The millennial generation used slang in Instagram because some reasons such as to address, to initiate relax conversation, to humiliate, to express impression and to show intimacy.    Keywords: Slang, Types of slang, Reasons of slang, millennial generation

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is conducted as an attempt to find out the effect of applying SAVI approach on Students’ speaking Achievement in oral descriptive text. This study used the experimental design. The population of this study is the students of SMA Yayasan Pendidikan Harapan Bangsa . The sample of this study was the 2018/2019eleventh grade students of SMA Yayasan Pendidikan Harapan Bangsa . This study is conducted with two randomized groups namely experimental group and control group. The control group is taught by conventional method while experimental group is taught by applying SAVI Approach. The instrument used in this study was an oral test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the researcher used t-test formula.. The data were analyzed by using t-test. The calculation shows that t-observed (2.50) is higher than t-table (1.666) at the level of significance (α) 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 74. Therefore, null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means that SAVI approach significantly affect the students’ speaking achievement in oral descriptive text.

Abstract

Nowadays, universal language which is used in the world is English. The ability of speaking English is being a prerequisite to be someone’s success in the future. The aim of this study is to find the phenomenon of code switching in bilingual classroom which focused on types of grammatical code switching and reasons of using grammatical code switching. This research applied descriptive qualitative research which obtained the data from the discourse of lecturers and students in bilingual classroom at Universitas Negeri Medan. The researchers applied observation, interview and documentation. The data showed that lecturers and students used grammatical code switching in the classroom such as 2 tag code switching, 12 inter-sentential code switching, 22 intra-sentential code switching, 3 proper nouns, 1 negative words, 8 similarity of words in languages and 3 discourse marker. There are some reasons why the participants used code switching in their discourse. First, code switching made students more understand what the lecturers explained because not all bilingual students are able to speak English. Second, they used code switching because lack of vocabulary in English and so that they switched languages to make the material were easier to be understood.Keywords— Code Switching, Types of Grammatical Code Switching, Reasons of Code Switching, Bilingual Education

Abstract

Based on School Based Curriculum, writing is one of the English language  skills that must be taught and learned in Senior High School. SMA Swasta YPIS Maju Binjai is a school which uses K13 as the curriculum in the teaching and learning process. After doing observation in SMA Swasta YPIS Maju Binjai, the writer found that the students were difficult in developing a descriptive text. In this case, the teacher was expected to find a good strategy in order to give a contribution to increase the students’ ability in writing a descriptive text by applying Praise-Question-Polish (PQP) Strategy as a replacement of previous strategy or technique.This research consisted of two variables, they were Praise-Question-Polish Strategy as variable X, and students’ writing descriptive text as variable Y. The type of this research was an experimental research. The writer used a quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control group which was intended to find out the effect of using Praise-Question-Polish (PQP) Strategy on students’ writing descriptive text of the tenth grade students of SMA Swasta YPIS Maju Binjai.In  analyzing  the  data,  the  writer  used a statistical  analysis  which  used t-table. It was obtained that t-obtained was higher than t-table. It means, null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It could be stared that 6,971 > 1,672. In conclusion, there was a significant effect of using praise-question-polish strategy on students’ writing descriptive text of the tenth grade students of SMA Swasta YPIS Maju Binjai.
