Abstract

Fucoidans are sulfated polysaccharides found in marine algae and have many benefits, including antitumor effects, increasing apoptosis of cancer cells, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and hypoallergenic. In oral health, several case reports have shown that creams and tablets containing fucoidan are proven to treat recurrent aphthous stomatitis and recurrent oral herpes labialis. The aim of this study was to investigate the properties of fucoidans used in oral health as antimicrobial and antibacteria. Secondary data and literature study were analyzed descriptively by presenting and comparing the results of research on the use of fucoidan extract from brown algae as an antibacterial agent for teeth. Fucoidan extract from brown algae has been proven has the ability to inhibit bacteria that cause damage to the oral cavity, Streptococcus mutans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium. Four main results were obtained: fucoidans showed strong antimicrobial activity against C.albicans, S.mutans, and P.gingiva-lis; attachment is obstructed, S.mutans on bovine and porcelain teeth; exhibit COX-1 and or COX-2 inhibitory activity. It is concluded that fucoidan extract from brown algae can reduce oral pathogens and has antibacterial activity

Abstract

Periodontitis is an inflammation that occurs in the tooth supporting tissues caused by specific micro-organisms. Plaque and calcu-lus bacteria are considered the main causes of periodontal disease. One of the main bacteria that cause periodontal disease found in subgingival plaque with chronic periodontitis is Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola and Bacteroides forsythus. Conventional antimicrobials (antibiotics), especially tetracyclines are often used to support periodontal disease therapy, but an-tibiotics can cause side effects, namely resistance, allergic reactions, and toxic reactions. Therefore, alternative therapies are needed to treat periodontal disease without side effects. In particular, Moringa oleifera is known to contain more than 90 types of nutrients in the form of essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antiaging, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, hy-potensive, inhibitors of bacterial and fungal activity. The many pharmacological effects possessed by M.oleifera make this her-bal plant widely used to treat various diseases, especially periodontal disease. There is growing research showing the antimi-crobial ability of M.oleifera.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has limited oral health care to emergency measures only, including pain due to third molar impaction. This study evaluated the prevalence of third molar impaction at the Hasanuddin University Teaching Dental and Oral Hospital during the pandemic in 2020. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on patients aged 17 years and above who came to Dental Hospital of Unhas in 2020 and underwent radiographic examination, and were classified as impacted and non-impacted groups. Data were analysed and tested by chi square to assess the relationship between third molar impaction with gen-der and age with a significance level of p<0.05. 2,392 data were obtained, of which 60.1% were female. The number of sam-ples with third molar impaction was 30.4% and the highest age group was 21-30 years old (35.6%). There was no significant dif-ference between third molar impaction and gender, but there was a significant difference between the impaction and age. The incidence of impaction decreased with age. It was concluded that the prevalence of third molar impaction requiring treatment during the Covid-19 pandemic at Dental Hospital of Unhas in 2020 was 30.4% which was dominated by female patients aged 21-30 years.

Abstract

The objective of this article is to discuss the role of stabilization splints in overcoming the temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) experienced by a 24-year-old woman who came to the Prosthodontics clinic of RSGM FKG Unpad with chief com-plaints of pain and sounds that appear in the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) when opening the mouth, limited mouth opening, and muscle tension in the neck and face region. The patient wanted her problem to be resolved. The treatment procedure start-ed with the extraction of the impacted right and left upper third molars followed by a stabilization splint with a control dura-tion every two weeks. During the treatment phase, the patient was instructed to perform self-management therapy for elimi-nating the bad habits. After using the stabilization splint for 3 months the TMD gradually recovered. It is concluded that the use of stabilizing splints as occlusal therapy was considered an effective method in overcoming TMD.

Abstract

Longan (Dimocarpus longan L.) is a plant that has potential as an antibacterial. Longan seeds are part of the longan plant which contains antibacterial compounds in the form of phenolics, tannins, flavonoids, and triterpenoids. This research is aimed to deter-mine the antibacterial effect of longan seeds on the bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 332277 which causes chronic periodontitis by calculating the average diameter of the inhibition zone. This research was conducted using experimental labora-tory methods with groups at concentrations of 3.125%, 6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%. In comparison, chlorhexidine 0,2% as a positive control and DMSO 10% as a negative control. Based on the well diffusion method, the results showed that in the experimental group, a concentration of 100% resulted in a 10.07 mm zone of inhibition but not greater than chlorhexidine 0.2% which has 11.94 mm. At the same time, the smallest inhibition zone was produced by longan seeds with 25% extract which was 3.15 mm. It is concluded that there is an effect of longan seed extract on inhibiting the growth of P.gingivalis bacteria.

Abstract

Alveolar bone is mineralized connective tissue with cellular components consisting of three main cell types: osteoblasts, osteo-cytes, and osteoclasts. Alveolar bone conditions can undergo resorption due to certain conditions such as bacterial invasion due to periodontal disease. Fucoidan can increase alkaline phosphate levels, collagen type-1 expression, osteocalcin, and BMP-2 and assist in mineral deposition associated with bone healing through increased osteoblasts. This review is a descriptive obser-vation through systematic and structured literature searches through PubMed, Elsevier (Scopus), Science Direct, Springer, and Jurn websites. As many 1,482 articles found, they were filtered and found as many as 5 reference articles. It is concluded that fucoidan extract can stimulate the growth of osteoblast cells with the speed of growth of osteoblast cells depending on the con-centration and amount of fucoidan given

Abstract

Oral candidiasis is the most common opportunistic infection affecting the oral mucosa. In the majority of cases, the lesions are caused by Candida albicans. Various types of antifungal drugs have been widely produced and sold in the market to treat Can-didiasis, but these drugs have side effects. One of the plants that can be cultivated as an ornamental and medicinal plant is te-lang flower (Clitoria ternatea L.). It is known that the inhibition of telang flowers against C.albicans is caused by anthocyanins. This experimental study was designed with post-test only control group. Statistical tests with Kruskal-Wallis showed signifi-cant differences in the effectiveness of telang flower extract concentrations of 50%, 75%, 100% in killing C.albicans colonies. Mann Whitney test did not get a significant difference in the concentration of 50%, 75%, 100% telang flower extract in killing C. albicans; both on SDA media. The concentration of telang flower that continues to be increased has decreased in effectiveness. It is concluded that the higher the concentration of the diffusion power of the extract into the media decreases so that the lower the solubility.
