Abstract

Pigs are meat-producing livestock that are widely raised in the community, as one of animal protein source for the human body. Pork can be processed into various kind of food, one of which is pork jerky. Jerky can be made using sliced or ground pork. Jerky can be dried traditionaly (sun dried) or more advanced way (oven dried). The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of different drying methods on the organoleptic quality of pork jerky. The results based on paired t-test analysis showed that there was no significant difference (P>0,05) between the smell, texture and acceptability of pork jerky with different drying treatments. Meanwhile, the analysis of the color and taste of pork jerky showed a significant difference (P<0,05) between the two treatments. Although statistically there are differences between two drying treatments, the average number show a very small the differences. In conclusion, both oven-dried and sun-dried pork jerky are acceptable and suitable for consumption.

Abstract

An increase in the number of somatic cells to more than 400.000 cells/mL and the presence of pathogenic bacteria in the milk during normal lactation are two characteristics of subclinical mastitis. The purpose of this study was to compare subclinical mastitis-positive cows with healthy cows in terms of somatic cells count and milk composition, as well as the relationship between these two variables. Acquire from PT. Great Giant Livestock, a total of 29 fresh milk samples from 9 dairy cows tested positive for subclinical mastitis. The Breed method was used to determine the somatic cell count. Lactoscan was used to count the milk composition including fat, protein, lactose, solid non-fat, total solids, and density. The correlation between the somatic cell count and milk quality was tested using the Rank Spearman and the differences in milk quality between healthy cows and subclinical mastitis-positive cows were analyzed using Mann Whitney U. According to the data, subclinical mastitis-positive cows had more somatic cells than healthy cows. Furthermore, subclinical mastitis-affected cows provide milk of lower quality. Dairy cows with subclinical mastitis and healthy cows had significantly different milk composition (p< 0,05). The correlation between the number of somatic cells and milk composition was highly significant (p< 0,05). Subclinical mastitis-positive cows have a higher number of somatic cell and lower milk composition compared to healthy cows. The somatic cells count has a relationship with the composition of milk.

Abstract

Mammal animal as companion animal is cat. The disease that can attack cat can be infectious and non-infectious. Infectious disease can be caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi, while one of non-infectious diseases in cat is hernia. Hernia is a form of abnormal protrusion that occurs in organ from its normal location through a hole into a sac lined by 3 layers including the peritonium, tunika flava dan skin. The purpose of this activity is to find out the procedure, clinical symptoms, examination, and treatment of cats with hernia umbilicalis in inpatients at DRD Veterinary Clinic Surabaya City. Hernia can occur caused by congenital or trauma. The diagnostic methods of umbilical hernia taken from signalement, anamneses, physical examination with clinical sign that seen from hernia is abdominal swelling in umbilicus area, and then do the Xray examination with lateral view to see hernias ring and content of the hernia that appear radiolucent. Treatment of umbilical hernia case is surgery. Post surgery treatment was hospitalizes for 10 days with antibiotic oxytetracycline (Vet-Oxy LA®) to prevent the secondary infection and cleaning the wounds with Die Da Yao Jing® twice a day with sterile bandage dressing.

Abstract

A candidate gene suspected of affecting pigs' reproductive traits is known as the leptin (LEP) gene. Based on the information found in Leptin GenBank's DNA sequence database, this research aimed to determine single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and changes in nucleotides and phylogenetic trees in pigs. The data from NCBI GenBank was used to obtain three different DNA sequences of the Leptin gene in pigs. The DNA sequence data for leptin were aligned using BioEdit to establish the sites of SNPs and alterations in nucleotides. A phylogenetic tree was constructed using Mega X. DNA sequences were, and the pig LEP gene was sequenced resulted in 11 SNPs. These findings are based on the sequence regions. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that the sequence of the Leptin gene in pigs (Sus scrofa) clustered more closely with that of goats (Capra hircus) than it did with the sequence of the LEP gene among the cattle (Bos taurus and Bos indicus). The outcomes of this study can serve as a basis for more investigation into the connection between the LEP gene SNP and reproductive traits in pigs as one of potential genes for molecular selection.

Abstract

The effects of gastrointestinal parasties on feed intake and growth is well-established. The emphasis here is on raising awareness that parasites do have effects on body compositon and meat quality atrributes. Body composition refers to the acceptable balance of lean to fat ratio when animals were parasitised or when they were free of parasites. Rejection of carcases due to parasitism is also covered. It was concluded that parasitic infections at subclinical level lead to reduced quantity and impaired quality of meat indirectly by in protein and energy intake as well as through altering and diverting of protein availability for both body maintenance in the forms of establishing resilience to infection as well as repairing of tissues damaged by parasites at sites of predilection. Ineficiency in meat production and alterations to body composition due to nematode parasitism is very much associated with alterations in nutrient absorption and utilisation.
