Abstract

Philosophy and interpretation are two studies that come from different sides. When these two sciences are used to understand the Qur’an, the Quranic exegesis that has a philosophical character emerges. This research tries to trace the various intersections between Islamic philosophy and tafsir, especially in the frame of typology, epistemology, and implementation. The results of this study indicate that the emergence of the style of philosophical interpretation came through the translation of Greek works into Arabic. In general, there has not been found a complete Qur’anic commentary that contains philosophical style and is mostly found separately through writings that do not specifically interpret the Qur'an. The epistemology of the early generation of philosophical interpretations leaned towards paripathetic, thus involving the use of reason in discussing verses about divinity, life after death, and also scientific knowledge since nearly all philosopher scholars were also scientists. This article will more clearly examine some philosophers who explain some verses of the Qur’an with a philosophical approach including: al-Kindi, al-Farabi, Ikhwan al-Shafa, and Ibn Sina.

Abstract

This article discusses commodification related to the Qur’an in digital media. It uses a qualitative method with a sociological approach of consumptive society initiated by Jean Baudrillard. This research argues that the commodification of the Qur’an cannot be separated from the commodification of religion. On the one hand, the commodification of the Quran was quite large when the printing and publishing of the Qur’an began to flourish. However, on the other hand, the commodification of the Qur’an also occurs in the digital space, especially on television media and YouTube channels. This is due to the phenomenon of consumerism experienced that is rapidly experienced by society. As a result, the essence of the Qur’an may be lost the presentation of television programs and YouTube contents about the Qur’an is currently made only to reach the target market. However, there are also many positives pertaining to the presence of such television shows and YouTube contents in society.

Abstract

This paper examines the expression of the Muslim community in narrating hadith tashabbuh (imitation) in the form of memes. It aims to analyze the form and tendency of the memes through social media as well as the motive behind its creation. Using the theory of reception and constructivism with discourse analysis framework, this article argues that: first, the resonance of hadith tashabbuh is echoed in three forms of memes that spread across social media, namely on the lifestyle, new year celebrations, and birthdays. Second, the motive behind this phenomenon is an effort to affirm the identity and truth claims of the religious ideology of the textualist-fundamentalist group. The affirmation is expressed by claiming to be a group that follows the Prophet’s sunna, while justifying others as a group that does not follow the sunna. On the other hand, there is also a motive in revitalizing and reactualizing hadith that in line with the group’s form of hadith understanding. In the end, it implied for the creation of contestation over the meaning of the hadith tashabbuh to various aspects of life which then affects the religious paradigm of the Muslim community.

Abstract

The accusation of changing the Qur’an (taḥrif al-Qur’ān) is often leveled against the Shia. In fact, the Shia are considered to have their own Qur’an that is different from the standard Mushaf ‘Uthmān ī. This then implies accusations of heresy against them. This article will examine the views of three major Shia scholars on the authenticity of the Qur’an, namely al-Ṭūsī, al-Ṭabarsī, and al-Ṭabāṭabā ‘ī. The exploration of ideas is done by looking comparatively at their works of Qur’anic exegesis. In the end, this article finds that the narrative of naskh al-tilāwah (erasure of the texts of the Qur’an) that is widely attached to Shia is a history that contradicts the Qur’an. Although all three have different descriptions, they have the same idea, which is to reject the existence of changes (taḥrīf) in the Qur’an. Thus, the existing Qur’an, the standard Qur’an of the Mushaf ‘Uthmānī, is the authentic Qur’anic text.

Abstract

The interpretation of Ruhullah Khomeini which is agreed upon as a Sufistic interpretation is interesting for further discussion. This paper attempts to explore Imam Khomeini’s hermenutics, starting from his paradigm of the Qur’an and its exegesis, then examines his theory of allegorical interpretation by looking at how it produces new meanings that go beyond the literal meaning of the text or reach esoteric meanings, especially in terms of al-raḥmān and al-raḥīm. This paper use Paul Ricoeur’s interpretation theory as a thinking partner to find the idea of a surplus meaning that inhernt in every single text, including the Qur’anic text. This research finds three main points: Imam Khomeini’s idea on the diversity of meanings as a logical consequence from the premise that the Qur’an has two meanings, exoteric and esoteric; allegorical interpretation of Imam Khomeini which is explained discursively depicting a Sufistic-philosophical face and colored by Shia ideology; the interpretation of the terms al-raḥmān and al-raḥīm presents the concept of wujūdīyah (the existence) as a result of synthesis from the concepts of previous philosophers, especially Ibn ‘Arabī and Mulla Sadra. The diversity of meanings of al-raḥmān and al-raḥīm shown in Imam Khomeini’s interpretation from several views and his personal synthesis, includes: the two terms are interpreted the same and the repetition is only confirmation, meaning compassion and kindness, the Names and Attributes of Allah that reach the level of existence and manifestation.

Abstract

This article seeks to describe and analyze how the reception patterns of the millennial generation at universities in West Sulawesi about hijra and its implications for their lives. The objects of this study include students from STAIN Majene, West Sulawesi University, and IAI DDI Polewali. By using the model of living hadith studies, this paper argues that the model of exegetical reception of the meaning of hijra of the millennial generation at universities in West Sulawesi is based on narratives, namely the hadith text and texts outside the hadith. The meaning of hijra outside the context of the hadith interpreted by the millennial generation is hijra in the context of dressing, hijra in the context of social media, hijra in the context of entertainment, hijra in the context of tradition, hijra in the context of dating and hijra in the context of usury. In addition, it was also found that millennials at universities in West Sulawesi who have made hijra feel more confident, feel more motivated to worship and study Islam, and tend to claim to be the most correct.

Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive examination of the ba’ayun mawlid tradition in South Kalimantan, offering a unique perspective on the living hadith and cultural acculturation within the context of Islam’s peaceful dissemination in the region. Originating as the Bapalas Bidan, a pre-Islamic ritual honoring supernatural spirits involved in childbirth, this tradition underwent a significant transformation after the advent of Islam, retaining its structure while embracing Islamic values and practices. Today, ba’ayun mawlid takes place in mosques under the guidance of religious leaders and midwives, featuring salawat in place of Kaharingan spells. This study delves into the diverse motivations driving community engagement in this tradition, including vow fulfillment, the annual zuriat ritual, the pursuit of blessings from sacred customs and locales, tawassul to nurture filial devotion and love for the Prophet, efforts to enhance livelihoods, cultural heritage preservation, and the evolution of ba’ayun mawlid into a form of religious tourism. Rooted in the prophetic hadith promising reunion with loved ones in the hereafter, this cultural phenomenon underscores the profound influence of religious practices on shaping values, identities, and the cultural landscape of the Banua Halat community. It provides valuable insights into the dynamics of acculturation and the enduring impact of religion on Indonesian society.

Abstract

This article delves into the ascendancy of Nukhbat al-Fikar within the realm of Hadith scholarship during the Ottoman era. It posits that the book’s rise to authority was intricately tied to the establishment of Islamic madrasas under Ottoman rule, an influence stemming from educational practices in Egypt and its environs. Through a comprehensive exploration of Turkish sources, this paper contends that Nukhbat al-Fikar held a prominent place in Ottoman madrasa curricula due to the genealogical connections between Ottoman Hadith scholars and Ibn Hajar al-‘Asqalānī. Additionally, the work’s author, Ibn Hajar al-‘Asqalānī, enjoyed a lofty reputation among Ottoman scholars, which further solidifying the book’s status. This study underscores the popularity of Nukhbat al-Fikar by examining the proliferation of works by Ottoman Hadith scholars. These scholars sought to amplify its impact through translations, commentary notes (ta’līq), comprehensive explanations (sharh), and concise summaries. In doing so, they contributed to the enduring legacy of Nukhbat al-Fikar within Ottoman scholarly and educational circles. This research sheds light on the intricate interplay between educational systems, scholarly authority, and the dissemination of Islamic knowledge in the context of Ottoman Turkey

Abstract

This article delves into the intellectual landscape of Tariq Ramadan, focusing on his approach to interpretation and contextualization. The analysis centers on Ramadan’s work, In the Footsteps of the Prophet: Lessons from the Life of Muhammad, which, despite its biographical nature, unveils a profound connection between his thoughts and the art of interpretation and contextualization. The article contends that while Ramadan may not align himself explicitly with the tradition of reinterpretation or contextualization, his practical methodologies reflect interpretive strategies that breathe new life into historical texts, adapting them to contemporary contexts. Moreover, this paper argues that Ramadan’s contextual interpretations are deeply rooted in ethics, underpinned by the belief in their universal applicability across diverse conditions. These ethical values, as delineated by Ramadan, serve as a bridge between the past and the present, as they are seamlessly interwoven with educational narratives drawn from the life of Prophet Muhammad. These narratives not only provide a basis for Muslims to rekindle the prophetic ideals in the modern era but also offer a compelling framework for fostering moral and ethical guidance in a rapidly changing world. In this intricate web of interpretation and contextualization, Tariq Ramadan’s work emerges as a significant contribution to the ongoing discourse on Islamic thought and its relevance in contemporary society.

Abstract

This article delves into the scholarly contributions of al-Biqā’ī, a thinker whose intellectual journey unfolded amidst the turbulent backdrop of the Crusades, a period marked by intense horizontal conflicts between Muslims and Christians. Despite the charged atmosphere of polemical exchanges, al-Biqā’ī’s approach to intertextual interpretation sets him apart as a unique figure. His receptivity to Christian and Jewish traditions in his Qur’anic interpretations reflects an openness that defies the prevailing discord. This study scrutinizes al-Biqā’ī’s perspective on the status of the Gospel and the Torah within the realm of Qur’anic interpretation. Employing textual analysis, we argue that al-Biqā’ī permits references to the Gospel and the Torah as complementary sources (isti’nās) within the interpretive framework. However, he restricts their use as foundational or legal arguments (istidlāl and ihtijāj), particularly in theological or doctrinal matters. Within the theological context, al-Biqā’ī advocates against referencing the Gospel or the Torah. Nevertheless, when these references are confined to the complementary realm, such as citing historical narratives more elaborately detailed in the Gospel and Torah, they enrich insight, knowledge, and the narrative fabric of Qur’anic interpretation.
