Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out whether or not collaborative writing strategy is effective to improve students’ writing skill in descriptive text when they were applied to the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Karangtengah in academic year of 2015/2016. The collaborative writing strategy was the independent variable, while students’ writing skill in descriptive text was the dependent variable. Quasi experimental research design was used in this study. The population of this study was the tenth graders of SMA N 1 Karangtengah in the academic year of 2015/2016 which the total number of students was 340. The sample of this study consisted of X MIA 3 as an experimental class and X MIA 4 as a control group. The technique used in collecting the data was test. The finding of the study showed that the pre-test mean score of experimental group was 69.38 and control group was 68.71. After being given treatment for four meetings, it was found that the mean scores of experimental group was 82.15 and control group was 76.32. The result of the analysis showed that there was a significant difference between the mean score of pre-test and post-test. It was supported by t-test result in which the significant difference in the result of post-test between experimental and control group was 0.000 (smaller than 0.05). It means that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. Therefore, it could be concluded that collaborative writing strategy were effective to improve students’s writing skill in descriptive text.

However, many students find it difficult to express their ideas in a paragraph, and to make a composition correctly. The media factorseems to be one that makes the teaching-learning process unable to achieve its goal. Therefore, the authors propose to apply Cue Cards as teaching media to overcome the problem. The objective of the research is to scrutinize whether there is a significant difference between teaching writing of biography textbefore and that after being taught by using Cue Cards. This experimentemployed one group with pretest and posttest design was conducted at the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 KaranganyarDemakin academic year 2017/2018 insecond semester. There were 34 students of grade XI IPS 1 taken as the sample through cluster random sampling. The datasetsfor this research were collected through written test. Before cue cards were used in the treatment, the measn score was60. After cue cards were used in some meetings of treatment, the mean score is 82. The hypothesis of the research stated that there is a significant difference between teaching writing of biography text on the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1KaranganyarDemak in academic year 2017/2018) before and after being taught by using cue cardsis confirmed. It can be seen from the calculation of t-test, withdegree offreedom (df) = 33, α = 0,05,  t (critical) is ±2.042 and t (obtained) is 8.79. The analysis showed that Ho was denied and Ha was confirmed. Therefore, it is suggested to the English teacherto keep usingcue cardsin teaching writing of biography text.

Abstract

Intercultural understanding essentiallybecomes a part of  living with others in the diverse world of the twenty-first century. It assists people to become responsible local and global citizens through their education for living and working together in an interconnected world.  Language is a major component and supporter of culture as well as a primary tool for transferring message, which is inextricably bound with culture. Language is a key component of culture. It is also a primary medium for transmitting the culture itself. Without language, culture would not be possible. Students learning their native language are learning their own culture. Meanwhile, learning a second language also involves learning a second culture to varying degrees. A language is influenced and shaped by culture. It reflects culture. Cultural differences are the most serious areas causing misunderstanding, unpleasantness and even conflict in cross-cultural communication. Both foreign language learners and teachers accordingly should pay more attention to cultural communication information.

Abstract

The investigation in fact aimed mainly to analyze the theory of conversational implicature proposed by austin and later on extended by grice’s principle maxim which can be universal and applied to all languages of the world, including java language art show of ketoprak entitled “joko kendil”. The study is expected to be beneficial to the world of literature. Twenty-three minutes recorded video conversation of all participants of the show data were transcribed into written form and translated into english. Needless to say, the analysis of the data has been based on both austin’s and grice’s principles of pragmatics, conversational implicature theory. Illustrative examples for flouting the four maxims of speech were introduced and analyzed pragmatically. Particularly the research was objected to find out the violation of maxims of quantity, quality, manner and relation flouted and an implicature from each generated.  From the analysis, it was found that the claim of “ketoprak” speech can be systematized and it has implicatures in one way but not in another is to some extent true. Thus, this theory can be applied to other java language idiolects.
