User survey is a must for university because it is a compulsive point that must be completed in preparing accreditation forms for both universities and departments. The use of information technology media is expected to increase its maximum results at score 4. This study aims to determine the use of information technology in implementing user survey at Universitas Muria Kudus. The results obtained are quite good. The use of information technology in the user survey has been carried out in almost every stage of the activity. These stages were collecting data from the alumni website and then identifying the departments. The next was blasting information on tracer study activities and procedures to alumni via email and WhatsApp group of alumni in each department. After the alumni had filled out the questionnaire through career center (PKPA) website, respondents’ data were classified based on the name of the workplace, alumni, and departments. After that, alumni assessment questionnaire was sent via post to alumni users, which was attached with the names of the alumni. It was then confirmed via WhatsApp and or email to HRD or Contact Person at the alumni workplace two weeks after sending. The number of workplace (companies/agencies/schools) which responded was quite good. There were 83 workplaces responded back the assessment by post or email. The result of user survey is inecessary as an input for institutions in escalating the quality of graduates.

Paragraph Writing is the first writing subject in the curriculum of English Education Department which should be taken by the students who are in the second semester. The activities of writing cover some processes in which they should know and apply the theories to practice writing some texts. Grammar and sentence structure are the crucial problems faced by the students. It needs an extra attention to make them understand about the components involved in this element of writing. The components are applied step by step from the beginning of the semester until it ends. The research problems are raised with some questions as follows: (1) what are the grammar and sentence structure’s components of the students’ text in Paragraph Writing class? ; (2) How is the analysis of grammar and sentence structure of the students’ text in Paragraph Writing class?. Further chapter of the research will provide the analyzed data and the result as the answer of the problems raised. The texts written by the students as the data source are randomly chosen from the whole final projects. From the result of the analysis, it can be found that 63% of the total texts are grammatically incorrect. The components of grammar structure are also recorded that there are 10% of the sentences are stringy, 5% comma splice, 10% run-on sentence, and 12% sentence fragment. Mostly, the problem that the students face are about concidering the tense and verb words. The conjunctions that influence the meaning are also mostly mis-used. The percentages found in the analysis show that most of the students make some errors in their grammar use in writing their paragraph writing project. The suggestions of the correct ones are also written in their text sheets to make further revisions. This can make them concern more to learn from the analysis. Paragraph writing class is like a stepping stone for them to start learning from mistakes.

The collaborative writing strategy was the independent variable, while students’ writing skill in descriptive text was the dependent variable. Quasi experimental research design was used in this study. The population of this study was the tenth graders of SMA N 1 Karangtengah in the academic year of 2015/2016 which the total number of students was 340. The sample of this study consisted of X MIA 3 as an experimental class and X MIA 4 as a control group. The technique used in collecting the data was test. The finding of the study showed that the pre-test mean score of experimental group was 69.38 and control group was 68.71. After being given treatment for four meetings, it was found that the mean scores of experimental group was 82.15 and control group was 76.32. The result of the analysis showed that there was a significant difference between the mean score of pre-test and post-test. It was supported by t-test result in which the significant difference in the result of post-test between experimental and control group was 0.000 (smaller than 0.05). It means that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. Therefore, it could be concluded that collaborative writing strategy were effective to improve students’s writing skill in descriptive text.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims at finding out whether or not the use of chunking strategy is effective in developing students’ ability of story retelling to the tenth-grade students at MAN 01 Pekalongan. Quasi experimental research was applied as the method with two groups : experimental and control group. Face and content validity were done by asking the English teacher and advisor to be expert judgements to validate the instrument by using a rubric appearance of test for face validity and its conformity by curriculum as a content validity. Inter-rater reliability in giving scores to the students’ was done to measure the reliability of the test. This research used SPSS in analysing the data of speaking test through several activities. They were pre-test before treatments, and post-test after treatments. The result of the research shows the significant difference in the story retelling ability between tenth grade students who were taught by using chunking strategy and those were not taught by using it. It can be seen in the result of mean score in the post-test of experimental class which is 89 and control class which is 83 and as a result Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.044 less than 0.050. Therefore, the null hyothesis of this study is rejected. Before cue cards were used in the treatment, the measn score was60. After cue cards were used in some meetings of treatment, the mean score is 82. The hypothesis of the research stated that there is a significant difference between teaching writing of biography text on the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1KaranganyarDemak in academic year 2017/2018) before and after being taught by using cue cardsis confirmed. It can be seen from the calculation of t-test, withdegree offreedom (df) = 33, α = 0,05,  t (critical) is ±2.042 and t (obtained) is 8.79. The analysis showed that Ho was denied and Ha was confirmed. Therefore, it is suggested to the English teacherto keep usingcue cardsin teaching writing of biography text.

Abstract

English language textbooks, as one of the manifestations of language-in-education policy, played an important role to connect classroom language and real world language. The present study investigates the gender representation in the English as A Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks. The analysis is done by tallying the number of occurrence of male and female characters. The research results indicated that there is an equitable representation of both males and females. However, there is a gender bias portraying females. Males are portrayed to be more authoritative and put in the spotlight, such as the one of doing the networking in business meeting while female characters are in the background, doing presentation, giving speech, more representative in politics, in which females are absent on this spotlight.
