Abstract

In examining the institutionalization of halal-thayyib (HT) and its enhancements, the aim of this article is to three-fold: (1) to deliberate on the ontological components of HT and to formulate an integrated Nusantara framework of halal-thayyib as guiding foundational pillars of institutionalization, (2) to examine insights, issues and social constructs of institutionalization of HT in Indonesia based on social actors’ own perspectives as well as legal and structural realities in Indonesia and (3) to provide an analysis of constraints, gaps and potentialities of institutionalization based the findings in relation to the integrated Nusantara framework of HT. This article is based on a case study in Banten, as Indonesian government has already identified it to be developed as the largest landmass of halal food-hub in Southeast Asia. The research employs deductive logic in the formulation of framework and abductive research strategy in obtaining the informants’ own insights and constructs vis-à-vis the subject matter. From the analysis, early indications in the empirical field show that the problems are arguably deep and wide-ranging.  These issues become obvious with the incorporation of ‘thayyib’ (roughly means wholesomeness) into the halal concept especially when the entire food production process and its institutionalization practices are called into question. The overwhelming challenge is the rich prospects of the institutionalization of this enhancement in the halal food laws and certification. With the transformation into and adoption of halal-thayyib food laws, Indonesia will be well-placed as the leader not only in ASEAN but also regionally in Asia and beyond.

Abstract

Corn Gluten Meal (CGM) and Corn Steep Powder (CSP) are corn-based feed raw materials that have the potential to be used as raw materials for milkfish feed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the digestibility value of CGM and CSP as raw materials for milkfish feed. Milkfish weighing 7.6±0.684 g was stocked into 12 aquariums measuring 60 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm and the water volume was 15 liters. The study consisted of 3 different types of feeding and 3 replications, namely: K: Reference feed (control), A: CGM test feed and B: CSP test feed. The results showed that the use of CGM and CSP as feed raw materials did not effect on feed intake, specific growth rate and feed efficiency of milkfish. The CGM and CSP test feeds resulted in lower nutrient digestibility values compared to the reference feed. CGM and CSP were not effectively used as raw material for milkfish feed.

Abstract

The functions and benefits of the existence of the mangrove ecosystem are strongly influenced by their health conditions. Ideally, a healthy mangrove ecosystem will provide greater ecological, economic, and service benefits. This study aims to determine the health condition of the mangrove ecosystem as a first step for disaster mitigation and productive economic development in the coastal area of the Sunda Strait. Data collection was carried out in November-December 2021 using the MonMang application in five different villages. The results showed that the highest diversity of mangrove species was found in Cigorondong Village with 9 species including Acanthus ilicifolius, Avicennia marina, Aegiceras corniculatum, Derris trifoliata, Sonneratia caseolaris, Excoecaria agallocha, Lumnitzera racemosa, Ceriops tagal, Heritiera littoralis. The highest canopy cover (79%) was found in the mangrove ecosystem in Citeureup Village and the highest tree density was found in Cigorondong Village at 3,300 individuals/ha. The health condition of the mangrove ecosystem on the coast of the Sunda Strait is moderate because the MHI value obtained is in the range of 33-63%.

Abstract

The government continues to strive to fulfill the food needs of the community, one of which is the creation of a food estate program. The food estate program is a long-term government program oriented to the development of food on a large scale with the concept of agriculture based on Science and Technology. The purpose of this food estate program is to serve as a community food reserve so that food availability can always be met from time to time, even if there is a food shortage or food crisis. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of food estate in increasing national food security for the community. This study uses a qualitative method that briefly discusses the effect of food estate on the community. The results of the study explain that the food estate program, especially because large-scale land clearing has a good impact on improving food security in Indonesia and the role of food estates as food reserves is very beneficial for the community, especially when there is a crisis or food shortage. The food estate program can have a good impact and benefit if the government and the community can work together and be participatory so that this program can succeed.

Abstract

Feed is the main component in the cultivation of milkfish. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of Corn Gluten Meal (CGM) as a protein source in the diet on the growth performance of milkfish. This research was conducted experimentally with initial milkfish weight of 4.9 ± 1.24 g/fish obtained from milkfish farmers on the north coast of Banten. The study design used a completely randomized design with five different treatments of CGM levels (0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% CGM) and 4 replications were used in this study. Milkfish are kept in an aquarium (60 x 40 x 60 cm) with a density of 15 individuals/aquarium for 50 days. The results showed that the best value of feed efficiency, specific growth rate, and protein effiency ratio were obtained in CGM 75% treatment than the other treatments. The use of CGM in feed also had no effect (P> 0.05) on the survival rate of the milkfish. CGM can be used as proteon source in milkfish feed.
