Abstract

The objective of this study is to identify the factors that affect the high prevalence of goiter among elementary school students in goiter endemic area.  The specific objective are to identify the socio-economic characteristics of the sample family, to analyze food consumption related to goiter, to identify the variety of food contains of goitrogenic substances, to measure the iodium salt concentration, to analyze the correlation between mother knowledge about IDD, food consumption and the quality of salt with the goiter status. This research was designed with cross sectional study with purposive method.  This research was conducted at Kabupaten Tasikmalaya, West Java from April to May 2005. The respondent consisted of 60 elementary school students, which 30 of them classified as normal group and the rest of them belong to the goiter group. The two sample groups were analyzing by the t-test and Mann Whitney test. The correlation variables were analyzed by the Spearman test. There were significant difference between the income on the normal group and the goiter group; the normal group had higher income than the rest. There were significant difference between the adequacy level of energy on the normal group (73.5%) and the goiter group (55.8%) and the average of the variety of goitrogenic food consumption. The Mann Whitney test showed there were also significant differences for the quality of salt. There were significant correlations between mother knowledge about IDD with the adequacy of iodium, and between the cases of goiter with the quality of salt consumed by the family. Intensive nutrition education of IDD is needed to improve the nutrition knowledge of the mothers, as well as the availability of the accessible iodized salt.

Abstract

Keywords : persepsi, partisipasi, program gizi

Abstract

This study was aimed at analyzing risk factors of nutritional anemia among new students of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB). A logistic regression model for 1907 new students’ record data matched with health record data was selected and applied on anemia risk factors analysis. The result showed that 10.9% and 21.4% of the students were suffering from nutritional anemia and proteinuria respectively. The risk factors of nutritional anemia among the new students of IPB are sex, age, family income and proteinuria status. The nutritional anemia risk is higher among female students (OR = 1.36); among younger age (age < 18 year); among students from low income family (OR = 1.70); and students suffered from proteinuria (OR = 1.49). This implies that the regular monitoring and controlling of both anemia and proteinuria among the students by Polyclinic of IPB are urgently required.

Abstract

The number of obese individuals worldwide has reached 2.1 billion and this will lead to explosion of obesity-related morbidity and mortality. Obese individuals will develop resistance to celluler action of insulin. The obesity related insulin resistance is the major risk factor of cardiovascular diseases and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, the disease which number has reached epidemic proportion. The association between obesity and insulin resistance seem to be cause and effect relation because studies on human and animal has indicated that the increase or decrease of body weight correlates with insulin sensitivity.  Among of many mechanisms proposed, the most often proposed mechanisms are endocrine and cell intrinsik mechanism. The increase of fatty acid plasma concentration, dysregulation of adipokines and ectopic fat storage are proposed to be the endocrin mechanism that lead to obesity related insulin resistance while oxidative stress and mitochondria dysfunction are the cell intrinsic mechanisms that play role to the disease. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of obesity related insulin resistance will provide valuable information to search for interventions that help to prevent or treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and cardiovascular diseases and its related pathologies.

Abstract

Index of food intake diversity or dietary diversity reflects the nutritional quality of the diet; and it is associated with nutritional health outcomes. Understanding factors determine index of dietary diversity is important for improving nutritional-health status of the people.  However, no studies have been done to capture completely the determinant factors of dietary diversity. This journal article is intended to review the determinants factor of dietary diversity from studies done in both develop and developing countries at individual and household levels.  The results show that four studies analyzed the food data at individual level and the other four studies analyzed the food data at household level; and most of the studies were done in USA. Method of dietary diversity measurement and its statistical analysis varies among the studies. A few dietary diversity studies have investigated particular determinant factors with attention given to assessing nutrition knowledge and socio-demographic factors; and the others on economic and ecological factors.  The present review  suggested that the determinant factors of dietary diversity are nutrition knowledge, food preference, household size and composition, food availability and ecological factors, time availability for food preparation, and food purchasing power e.g. income, food expenditure and food prices. Based on this review a comprehensive conceptual framework and model of the determinant factors of dietary diversity could be developed.

Abstract

The study was designed to analyze level of household food security of farmers who plant organic rice and identify landholding that supporting household food security. For that purposes, 61 samples of household were selected from farming households in Ciburuy Village, Bogor Regency. Data collected was landholding, working capital, cooperation, education, purposes of practicing on organic farming, waste management, knowledge of organic farming, organic rice productivity, income, food consumption and level of household food security. Food recall 1 X 24 hours and food frequency (weekly, monthly, and yearly) were used to obtain food consumption data. Household food security was determined based on level of energy consumption. Landholding that supporting household food security was determined based on rice consumption and household productivity. The analyses results of household food security showed that 85.2% of households were secure and 14.8% were insecure. Variables that significantly influenced household food security were income, knowledge of organic farming, organic rice productivity, purposes of practicing on organic farming, landholding, and waste management. Pearson correlation analyses showed that income, knowledge of organic farming, organic rice productivity, and landholding had significant effect toward  household food security. Spearman correlation analyses showed that purposes of practicing on organic farming and waste management had significant association with household food security too.  Based on daily average of energy sufficiency, land-man ratio should be 318 m2/person.
